    mourinho his a genius
all he need right is to win a world cup with portugal

  3. calin says:

JCD a soccer fan, who would have believed?

  4. joaoPT says:

JCD is not, but Eideard is…

Well, my countryman Mourinho, besides being a pompous, self-centred, arrogant prick, is, in fact, a Football (or should I say Soccer…) Genius.
And this Inter championship victory is, at least 50% his work. But that was the game against Barça. This one match was 90% Milito.
Let’s see if he can master the “Vanity Fair” of footbal that is Real Madrid…
    Good luck dude…

  5. honeyman says:

Damn you Ed! I haven’t watched it yet!

  6. Faxon says:

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz is right. If anybody here cared about this stupid game, it would be played here. NFL and NBA and MLB are fucking bad enough.

  7. Faxon says:

….Maybe if they played the game with human heads like the Incas (or was it the Aztecs?)…….
THEN you would have something. Pick your politician. Me? I favor a certain powerful woman in Washington.

  8. Tippis says:

#7 “If anybody here cared about this stupid game, it would be played here.”

At least football is a world sport, unlike hand-egg, so there is probably plenty of interest in it to go around (and why hand-egg is also called “football” is one of life’s mysteries – they really should rename it to remove the confusion).

    #8: YM Palin?

  10. amodedoma says:

Hey I know some of you know nothing about football – what only unitedstatesicans call soccer. The majority of the human race has a passion for this sport you may never understand.

    [Unitedstatesicans? Har! – ed.]

  11. Floyd says:

The thing is, soccer is the only professional sport that is even more boring than baseball (which at least involves some kind of strategy and in which someone usually wins). I often wonder how soccer fans stay awake through a match where the final score is often 1 to 0.

By the way, the term Football in this country applies to American football and rugby football, which are fast moving and are actually exciting to watch.

  12. Floyd says:

Another comment: who’s the guy in the black tailored suit and spiffy haircut and tie, and what the heck is he doing on the playing field? Is he the team owner, who in the States would be carefully kept away from the coaches and simply put in a corner to count his money? Inquiring minds and all that…

  13. madtruckman says:

i used to be an anti-soccer guy, but after the US team started actually being good, i began to take interest. yes, its not as exciting as american football for sure, but it does have its place and excitement. im really excited for the world cup. the games are (in my opnion) more exciting with all the national pride involved. i do think the US has a good shot at making it past the quarter-finals this year. and i cannot WAIT for the US-england game so the US can kick the tres-lions asses. oh, and WAYNE ROONEY IS A WHINER!!

  14. LDA says:

I recorded this and was just about to watch it. I avoided Google news etc. and thought I was safe to check /blog. I was wrong. Oh well.

  15. cloewe says:

Soccer? I thought this was only played by boys and girls until around 12-13 years old. After this they begin to understand just how boring the game really is.

  16. amodedoma says:

    #16 Pedro,

Yeah right, the best players, with the biggest contracts, in the world’s favorite sport, why would that be interesting. Watch, a european team will win the world cup in South Africa!

  17. amodedoma says:

Yeah but, Mourinho and Florentino Perez, might not mesh. The owner of Real Madrid, has a history of interfereing with his coach’s decisions. Many careers have been ruined by this club, because they pay top dollar, they demand top results fast. This season’s coach Pelligrini got the team to 2nd in Spain’s BBVA league with some really good statistics, but they won no leagues or cups, so he’s out on his ass. Same will happen to Mourinho if he doesn’t produce results the first year he’s there. Still, I can’t wait to watch next years Real Madrid vs. Barça match.

  18. joaoPT says:

    #18 amodedoma

For sure they will clash. Perez’s Real always was a marketing and T-shirt selling house.
Mou doesn’t like that. That why he parted with Chelsea, Abramovich wanted to turn Chelsea into the British Real…

On another note, it’s amazing the US anti-soccerism going around. And calling it boring baffles me…

    #19, JoaoPT,

On another note, it’s amazing the US anti-soccerism going around. And calling it boring baffles me…

Soccer is quite popular with the younger kids up to age 12-14 or so. What kills it is that it is not so well supported in the higher grades in schools. It seems most school stream their sports towards American Football in the autumn, Basketball in the winter, and Baseball in the spring/summer. While soccer is a great sport, we forgot to leave room for it on our calender and none of the other sports will willingly give up their crowns.

  21. agile says:

Milito scored two wonderful goals, but he may not see much playing time at the World Cup. Argentina is expected to play a 2-4-4, and the team has 6 great forwards for 2 positions.

  22. JoaoPT says:

    #21

    And that’s a shame…
Maybe it’s because it doesn’t fit in the American TV advertising pace.
Basketball’s rules were changed to have more breaks, American Football is almost all the time stopped, and Baseball has a pace that permits a high rate of advertising. Soccer has briefer stopped moments and has long 45 minute half times.
Also the regulating bodies are Europe based.
No wonder the installed interests in the USA are not willing to turn this sport popular in the US.
    IMHO

  23. Floyd says:

#20: Americans call soccer boring because it IS boring to watch. Like I and others have said, watching soccer is like watching paint dry, with 1 to 0 scores. From what I’ve heard, most of the action is the fights in the stands.

So, who’s the overdressed turkey in the black suit? Certainly not God, though with the black suit he might be playing for the other team.

  24. Holdfast says:

#24 Soccer may be boring to the uninformed USA’ian, but football, as it is known on the rest of the planet, is anything but!

What you call “football” is no such thing. It is a mixed up version of football and rugby.

If you find it boring, here are some possible reasons…

    1. You don’t like any sport.

    2. You have the attention span of a hamster.

    3. You have never actually seen it played competitively by anyone over the age of 12.

    4. You think sports stars should use lots of steroids.

Others have said above that the reason your country has a different national sport from most of the world is down to your TV networks.
I am sure there are other reasons too.

  25. Floyd says:

#27: Pedro, your observations about soccer are pretty accurate, but forgot to mention the fights among the fans in the stands, which are the reason that many soccer fans go in the first place, especially in Great Britain.

Incidentally. I can add that auto racing fans go to Indy and Nascar races mostly to eat fried chicken and drink beer, but fights rarely break out in the stands. The $75 to 150 and higher ticket prices usually keep out the riff raff.

  26. joaoPT says:

    Nascar, now that’s boooooring…
F1 is a bit booring, but at least there’s driving abilities being used. It just goes on and on and on… it’s too lenghty… But Nascar it’s just going around in a circle and crashing…

  27. car says:

    Who cares about US sports?
    Zzzzzz…

  28. JoaoPT says:

Not more people, but more money. The Stakes are higher, the advertising bucks run through the roof… Let’s face it, we’re not talking sports achievements here…Soccer is loosing it fast also…it’s rapidly becoming “entertainement”.

  29. hhopper says:

In soccer, the number of points scored has nothing to do with whether it’s a good game. It’s the play action that people enjoy.

  30. joaoPT says:

Thanks hhopper… It’s so hard to convey the uniqueness of a soccer game. People only see boredom, but once you start knowing what you are looking at, you start seeing the tactics and strategies of the game. It’s so fast you can’t see it, if you’re not aware of the game.
The defense positioning, the mid-field triangulations, the side lanes, the dynamic progression. Even the fouls are interesting because there are rules of engagement. Everything is dynamic in soccer and has to do with rythms, offense/defense actions, transitioning from one to the other. Ball possession… It has lots and lots of details that would just be missed by a casual couch potato viewer zapping through channels…

    But HEY! Everyone get’s it’s kicks the way they want… I can’t watch Baseball either…and cricket… let’s not get weird here…
