An Arizona utility commissioner said he’s willing to pull the plug on Los Angeles if the city goes through with a boycott of his state.

In a letter to the city of LA, a member of Arizona’s power commission said he would ask Arizona utility companies to cut off the power supply to Los Angeles. LA gets about 25 percent of its power from Arizona.

“That is one commissioner who has that idea — whether he can do that or not is another idea,” said LA Councilman Dennis Zine. “They are the ones who have to make the move, not us.”

The commissioner’s power grid play is in response to the city’s approval of a resolution directing city staff to consider which contracts with Arizona can be terminated. Here’s part Arizona Corporation Commission member Gary Pierce’s letter to the mayor:

If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation.

I am confident that Arizona’s utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands. If, however, you find that the City Council lacks the strength of its convictions to turn off the lights in Los Angeles and boycott Arizona power, please reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona’s economy.

What’s it going to take to get the Feds to enforce the law? Only when the violence from the Mexican drug cartels start to affect them personally, or politically. That’s my guess. Mr. President…do your job.

Make this a footnote to support the posting on “Burka Rage.”

Or will we refuse to connect the dots?

  2. greensaab says:

When I saw this this morning it was funny to me. LA boycotted Arizona but is still taking the power from Arizona. So they only boycotting what is convenient. I would say cut it since they are boycotting there is no need to send anything over, just to show the hypocrisy.

  3. Grandpa says:

I told you so. I said a long time ago this issue would lead to another civil war. This is the beginning. Obama got elected by the Hispanics to legalize their illegal activities. Now he’s skirting the issue until after the elections. Then he will get his amnesty bill passed and fulfill his obligation to Hispanic voters. Big choice for most of us: Vote for illegal immigration or vote for extremist Republican send all the jobs overseas Tea Party. Armor up boys, the game is on.

  4. Floyd says:

I think both states are nuts. If I remember correctly, there’s a clause in the Constitution:

[The Congress shall have power] “To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian tribes;”

    More:

The significance of the Commerce Clause is described in the Supreme Court’s opinion in Gonzales v. Raich, 545 U.S. 1 (2005):
“ The Commerce Clause emerged as the Framers’ response to the central problem giving rise to the Constitution itself: the absence of any federal commerce power under the Articles of Confederation. For the first century of our history, the primary use of the Clause was to preclude the kind of discriminatory state legislation that had once been permissible. Then, in response to rapid industrial development and an increasingly interdependent national economy, Congress “ushered in a new era of federal regulation under the commerce power,” beginning with the enactment of the Interstate Commerce Act in 1887 and the Sherman Antitrust Act in 1890.

I am not a lawyer, but from what I can tell, Neither California nor Arizona can restrain trade.

  5. Rosignol says:

Am I to assume then, that Dvorak.org agrees with the law that was passed in Arizona? I must say that is quite disturbing. Guess I’ll have to reassess my reading choices. And to say that we now have to choose between “illegal immigration” and “extremist Republican etc” is a false argument. Do some research before you let feces fly out of your mouth.

  8. deowll says:

#1 What makes you think this has anything to do with the problems with Islam, race, or religion?

Phoenix is the kidnap capital of the US and second planet wide. The blood bath going on south of the border has moved into Arizona.

It is the Executive Branch’s job to maintain order and assure domestic tranquility and they aren’t. It is the Executive Branch’s job to control the boarders and they have failed wretchedly.

I suppose it would be a waste of time and money in a way to sue Obama in Federal court and try to get a court order to force him to do the Job he swore to do but at least it might make it clear to the lame media and their ilk what the problem is.

On second thought forget it. These people are to oblivious to reality to get sunrise and sunset. Unless they personally get victimized they aren’t going to get jack and even if one of them figures it out after getting brutalized they couldn’t get through to their peers.

  9. Ah_Yea says:

“What’s it going to take to get the Feds to enforce the law?”

Let’s try this on for size.

Pass a state law which mirrors already existing Federal law concerning border security and illegal immigration.

Then see what happens. See who actually follows the law and who doesn’t.

It has become obvious the Obama Administration has absolutely no intention whatsoever of enforcing it’s own Federal Laws.

Isn’t the Federal Government Constitutionally required to police and secure our borders?

  10. Bill R. says:

Isn’t it nice that our politicians have resorted to this petty bickering.

I can see it now, LA stops getting Arizona power and Phoenix fuel rates increase because LA cuts off the fuel supply.

When will this end?? With boarder checkpoints along the Colorado River??

This is very typical of the adult babies that populate that living hell called california. Their state is fucking bankrupt, but all they can worry about is arizona hurting the feelings of mexicans? Which arent even mexicans actually. The big problems are coming from M13. Just ridiculous, clean up your own house california. Fucking grow up.

  12. gquaglia says:

Go Arizona! Fuck you L.A. and all of California for that matter. Lets see what happens when the lights go out in L.A. and all those poor illegals take to the street to loot and pillage.

Arizona… if they’re brain dead, just pull the plug. No sense having a drain on the system when there’s no hope.

  18. Bob says:

You know If Obama wasn’t too busy playing kissy face with the Mexican president he would step in, and tell both sides to shut up while the federal review is under way. No matter what you think of the law this boycott crap is just stupid, and frankly the LA city council has better things to worry about than some law that doesn’t even effect them.

  19. Steve S says:

Looking at all of the headlines regarding this story, I can’t believe the brain-dead main stream press would print such crap. They obviously have lost the ability to read. The letter to the LA mayor in no way whatsoever threatens to cut the power to Los Angeles. It suggests that if the LA city council is really serious about cutting all ties to Arizona business (and are not just a bunch of hypocrites blowing hot air), they might be able to re-negotiate the power contracts. There is no threat of cutting off power to LA! Really is there no hope at all for the ability of free press to print the truth!
In case anyone who can still read want to see what was in the letter, here is a link.

  21. bobbo, international traveler and student of human behavior says:

#7–deowll==This is “of the same type” of conflicts you get when cultures collide and both want their ways adopted by everyone else.

The only thing making this “different” is that the “other culture” shares a border with us and is actively invading us. Just like the Chinese did in Tibet.

Just wait for the numbers to get more unequal.

If you want to opine that this has nothing to do with racism, and is only about drugs, then why are the Mexicans (ie–including those in Mexico) upset and (ahem) saber rattling?

Yes, always a mix of things, and one of those things is “culture.”

  22. Hmeyers says:

The city of Columbus has banned travel to Arizona.

    Oh … and this …

“Columbus recently extended its agreement with Phoenix-based Redflex Traffic Systems Inc., which owns and operates the city’s 20 red-light cameras. The new contract will double the number of cameras posted at Columbus intersections to issue tickets to red-light-runners.

Rescinding that program “wouldn’t make sense to the taxpayers,” Williamson said.”

So they have banned travel to Arizona and meanwhile extended the contract with the Phoenix-based stop-light camera operator.

    Priceless.

    >> Obama got elected by the Hispanics to legalize their illegal activities.

This has to be one of the dumbest political observations I’ve heard in a long time. Racist, too.

Did George Bush get elected by the Whites to legalize their illegal activities?

  26. GregAllen says:

Even though I am TOTALLY against racial profiling, I would not support my state or city officially boycotting Arizona.

It goes beyond their political mandate — which is to run my state and city. I didn’t vote for them to run Arizona!

However, if individuals or private organizations want to boycott — that’s their right.

More importantly (and potentially effective) would be for the Democrats to use this as an opportunity to throw the racist bums out of office in Arizona.

That’s fair-and-square and how our democracy is supposed to work.

  27. Bhelverson says:

This is a GREAT idea. California needs a good excuse to go on a severe power diet. And Arizona can sell their power to . . . well, somebody. If Arizona is forced poto shut down a couple of their coal-fired wer plants, even better! It’s a win-win for everybody.

  28. Cursor_ says:

This whole issue in AZ is a a ploy thrown at the people of the state by politicians that want to “appear” tough on crime.

Florida and California both have higher percentages of illegal immigrants and both have higher rates of murder and and non-negligent manslaughter than AZ (from 2008 statistics). Neither of these states have enacted any legislation to add to the policing of their borders. Even Texas which has more than AZ has not done what AZ did.

This is just a re herring thrown out to a poorly educated public.

  29. GF says:

No Phil Jackson you’re not crazy. The Arizona law mirrors federal law with one exception, it specifically states officers cannot racially profile unlike what these brain dead protesters say.

If L.A. is worried about power wait till Arizona and Nevada stop giving California a portion of their Colorado River water allocation. Time to rip out the lawn ’cause it’s gonna die.

  30. BubbaRay says:

Well, my oh my! What about the City Of San Francisco wanting to let illegal aliens that are “resident” vote in local and state elections? How can you be “resident” if you’re an illegal alien?

WTF is this all about? Has the Mayor of San Francisco lost his ever-screwin’ mind?

Hey Arizona, while you’re at it, make sure San Francisco doesn’t receive a single watt of electrical power from you. Numbnut morans, take out Arnold by election first.

The latest proposal is another action making San Francisco “the most flamboyant city in the country when it comes to working against federal immigration laws,” said Steven Camarota, director of research for the Center of Immigration, a Washington, D.C., think tank favoring tougher enforcement of federal immigration laws.
