So I sit down on a recent flight when a commotion erupts and a slew of airport security folks rush into the plane. Some poor black guy is escorted off the plane to reemerge a couple minutes later after retrieving his luggage and finding a shirt to put over his t-shirt which some passenger (or crew member) found offensive. He’s shown above with the offending t-shirt. At least they didn’t shoot him. I found the whole episode to be very entertaining.

The line I draw is when somebody physically/mentally abuses somebody. Mentally only in the case of situatios like an adult abusing a child or the mentally handicapped or any other person that would not be a fair fight.

You always have the right to tell that person what is on your mind and not support those actions. I believe in the golden rule though and want to reserve the right to wear any clothing I want as long as I am coveredt to not be exposed to children. Outside of that, the earlier we teach our kids that words are only words and actions are what actually matter maybe we will end up in a society that’s less worried about appearing just and moral and actually be honest and kind.

Either way you can’t force that mentality and it must be taught as the more rewarding option

If we are going to restrict what people put on their clothes, maybe we should just make it illegal to use those words and burn any books that use them.hwe wouldn’t want the kids hearing or reading them. Hurry and check your library.

“Daddy what’s a dick? And why does it get hard?”

    I’m no prude,
    But that’s just rude.

    Hey…

    I’m a poet,
    and didn’t know it.

  4. bobbo, well I'm not gonna burst an artery over it says:

#31–donno==your post is confusing. You are responding to #17 so you start out saying you wouldn’t wear a t-shirt that offended (ie-“abused”) the mentally handicapped. That would mean non of us could respond to Pedro, or basically post anything thoughtful at all?

You know, the retarded can go off on just about anything? Or are you confusing/excepting mere words on t-shirts and reserve your answer to conditions you don’t mention like one-on-one with Pedro backed into a corner? More “personal” than the passive act of the t-shirt==or do you mean to include the t-shirt as you first suggest but then later seem to speak against?

Its just not clear. How protective of Pedro do we all need to get?

  5. Animby says:

Anybody say anything at all about the copy of Hustler they sold him in the airport bookstore so he’d have something to “read” on the airplane? How about the in-flight magazine which probably had a back cover of a Calvin Klein teenager as near nude as you can be and still be advertising clothing?

BTW, would that shirt still have been offensive if it were in Spanish? Arabic?

Okay, I’m in: let’s establish a national dress code.

  6. Rick Cain says:

Congratulations America, we are now as pro-free speech as Iran.

There are 6 billion people on this planet which means that you are sure to offend someone at sometime. Morals are like opinions and assholes, everyone has one.

The offeneded people need to learn how to deal with being offended. In most situations, I do not want to spend time telling some idiot that I was offended by something he said, wore or did. Ask yourself how you want to spend you time.

For those who spend the time to make their opinions and morals known, try to consider others around you. Other people may not want to be captured into your moral moment.

  9. Lou Minatti says:

It’s completely inappropriate and the airline has every right to boot him off. He is on private property (the airliner) and they have the right to expect certain things.

In a public place (the airport property) it’s still inappropriate but he has every right to wear it. Regardless, he’s a dumbass.

  10. Duh says:

Just tell him to turn the shirt inside out. Problem solved. People are too thin skinned these days. GROW UP!

  12. Dallas says:

Not a whole lot of analysis needed here. The proper thing to have done is to tell the kid: – change your disgusting shirt or leave the airport.

Sometimes common sense works best. We don’t need a law for it. The same goes for someone wishing to board a plane in a thong.
I don’t buy all the microanalysis if this is government mandated dress code.

  13. bobbo, well I'm not gonna burst an artery over it says:

“Not a whole lot of analysis needed here.” /// Make up your mind will ya?

  14. Skeptic says:

He left his hand off the top of the list.

  15. deityshirt says:

    More proof of God.

The millisecond the photo was snapped the shirt
has a fold that changes ‘your mom’ to ‘our mom’.

  16. cloewe says:

Funny the comments that having the guy cover it up is prudish. I am just sorry I wasn’t there. I would have had a field day with this scum. When meeting morons like this, I’ll usually say “your mother would be so proud of you, her hopes and dreams for her son are realized, you are a full blown a**h*le” This works wonders and have used it often.

  17. Maricopa says:

Ooooohhh! I shiver in my boots! Maybe his mother GAVE him the shirt, you sanctimonious asshole.

  18. Mextli says:

#31 donno “Outside of that, the earlier we teach our kids that words are only words and actions are what actually matter…”

    So much for Shakespeare.

  19. mike says:

Thank God he didn’t wear a stars and stripes shirt. That would have offended too many, and he might not have made it off of the airplane. The Politically Correct Islamic Slaves are winning, America is eating itself. I’ll have fries with that.

  20. clancys_daddy says:

    Bill, short answer, no.

  21. TaxationIsTheft says:

    BillBC, # 8 here.
No. There is no combination of words I would find offensive enough to ban from a public place. More clearly, there is nothing that could be put on a shirt with ink that would cross that line. A private place can ban anything it wants, however.

  22. cloewe says:

    48 Maricopa

Your mother probably wanted more from you but even failures have some love. The good news is you sound young so you may still have some time, but the curve is short.

  24. qb says:

tom, what a pile of bullshit. You should get a passport, travel the world for a year or two, and then go back to the US. You might see your own country in a better light after that.

  25. eighthnote says:

People who do not have a problem with this should read up on the tragedy of the commons. I agree that there may be some grounds for freedom of expression, but the restraint thereof, especially in matters that deal with nothing but prurient interests, is a matter of common civility.

  26. bobbo, well I'm not gonna burst an artery over it says:

    #56-8note==BS!

Is this what you are referring to?==The tragedy of the commons refers to a dilemma described in an influential article by that name written by Garrett Hardin and first published in the journal Science in 1968.[1] The article describes a situation in which multiple individuals, acting independently, and solely and rationally consulting their own self-interest, will ultimately deplete a shared limited resource even when it is clear that it is not in anyone’s long-term interest for this to happen.”

Unless you are referring to “your own” commons you think that civility is a higher resource than FREEDOM of expression? YOUR “civility” strikes me as blatant OPPRESSION. What other speech do you want to restrict? Gay rights? Abortion? Just about anything you wish to name is an attack on civility, so why don’t you just STFU?

Freedom is not sipping tea from bone china on silk placemats===its a raging bull destroying the icons of settled issues.

  27. Helloworld says:

Maybe because the male flight attendant did NOT make him hard, that caused the ruckus?

  28. bobbo, in a blinding flash of the obvious says:

  29. clancys_daddy says:

56 see 57, bobbo beat me to it. Um that’s minus the STFU I find that offensive, geez bobbo show some civility.

  30. bobbo, this is just LARP on a blog says:

#60–daddy==I agree. Its my weakness. An opinion goes for about 4-5 sentences, but after that, I fall into LARP (Live Action Role Playing) and become the persona I am blogging. If only 8 note had gone on for another few sentences, I’m sure the bowler hat, suspenders, and spats would have become visible.

Yes, let’s give it all up for another LARP: civility.
