UPDATE:
Wow! Who could have predicted this?

To make a long story short: this is all reported to be a fake. The photos were reputed to have been taken off site near the Black Sea, but the film footage the Chinese now have was shot on location on Mt. Ararat. In the late summer of 2008 ten Kurdish workers hired by Parasut, the guide used by the Chinese, are said to have planted large wood beams taken from an old structure in the Black Sea area (where the photos were originally taken) at the Mt. Ararat site. In the winter of 2008 a Chinese climber taken by Parasut’s men to the site saw the wood, but couldn’t get inside because of the severe weather conditions. During the summer of 2009 more wood was planted inside a cave at the site.

ORIGINAL STORY:

THE remains of Noah’s Ark have been discovered 13,000ft up a Turkish mountain, it has been claimed. A group of Chinese and Turkish evangelical explorers say they have found wooden remains on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey. They claim carbon dating proves the relics are 4,800 years old — around the same time the ark was said to be afloat. Yeung Wing-Cheung, from the Noah’s Ark Ministries International research team, said: “It’s not 100 per cent that it is Noah’s Ark, but we think it is 99.9 per cent that this is it.”

He said the structure contained several compartments, some with wooden beams, that they believe were used to house animals.

The group of evangelical archaeologists ruled out an established human settlement on the grounds none have ever been found above 11,000ft in the vicinity, Yeung said. Local Turkish officials will ask the central government in Ankara to apply for UNESCO World Heritage status so the site can be protected while a major archaeological dig is conducted.

The biblical story says that God decided to flood the Earth after seeing how corrupt it was.

Huh, I thought they found that boat long ago.

That is what my owners manual said. It all started with Adam and Steve making an Apple Pie from the forbidden Apple tree and one thing led to another.

    >> Ha, ha. Greg. Hard to go after you when I sense all your good will.

I try to have good will. (even though I am really cranky these days about the state of our country and towards those who caused it.)

    >> So–do you believe in coincidences? If so, how do you tell them apart from miracles?

I freely admit, it is totally subjective and a matter of faith.

The same event that might be a miracle for me would be coincidence or serendipity tor an atheist.

I am a strong believer in the healing power of gratitude and I direct that towards God. This is an extremely positive thing for me.

I’m also well aware that my belief in a miraculous, engaged God is viewed as naive foolishness by atheists (or worse!). I can’t care about that.

But, in my defense, I would point that many atheists can not fully embrace a totally random, totally meaningless existence leading to oblivion.

    >> #117–Greg==no, those are not all the same thing which is why they have separate words associated with them.

Wow, you put a lot of faith in semantics!

    >> but you have demonstrated once again the “mush” that is religion. Equate everything with everything else, and get all mystical feeling, and voila==there’s god.

In his day, people condemned Einstein for having a unified theory. Big, unfamiliar ideas often seem like “mush” or nonsense to people who stuck on the old ways of thinking.

    >> It is amusing to me/should be troubling to you==that in reality this mush shows science to be the guiding principle for all of us.

Science has no moral guidance, whatsoever. In fact, scientists have been some the great villains of the 20th century. Need science to make you a horrific WMD? No problem … not even a hesitation.

    >> Why else would religion seek the affirmation of science whereas science

I have to concede this point, generally, but not for me personally. I agree that many religious people try to use science to prove the existence of God. I think this is folly.

    >>. Science==the real world.
    >> Religion==the made up world.

Ironically, you have a religious-like faith in science! Intellectually-honest scientists will tell you that they, at best, have theories about reality. Theories which have and will be revised.

    >> While they both may be contemplated by man, they are not the same thing.

They are different. I have been very clear about that.

However, I believe that the ultimate goal of both religion and science is to understand the universe and our place in it.

Science primarily looks at the building blocks of the universe — way down on the complexity continuum.

Art, religion, philosophy look far higher up the complexity continuum

It’s analogous to studying a great building — science looks at the stones and mortar. Religion ponders about the architect. There is no contradiction in that.

    >> Yes, the miracle of god’s forgiveness has never regrown a severed arm. Why is that?

God isn’t in that business, IMHO. God’s interest is in giving the one-armed person a meaningful life.

I don’t know ANY evangelicals, including myself, that thought this was an authentic find. NONE!

  5. Friendly_ear4u says:

Funny. A fake Noah’s Ark story would’ve thunk? (Like the boat is still around after all these years Har)

Anyone reading the actual text would know that it was a localized flood (the same wording used here in this passage is used about the plagues of Egypt — which of course only affected Egypt). besides, the fact that the story shows up in so many cultures demonstrates the likelihood that there’s some truth in the story, and then it became a mythos used to make a point.

The idea of a worldwide global event 8000 years ago is the fantasy of uneducated folks who probably don’t read the Bible that closely in the first place.

Equally devoid of any real intellectual thought is the dismissal of the entire story by skeptics.

  6. John says:

“#102–john==the birther comment goes to looking for and not finding something in plain sight. Like you looking for the “missing link” or for evolutionary proof from humans to single cell life.

“THERE IT IS” and you dismiss it.

And so it goes with all other “proof” your religion is made up. If you recognize the proof at all, then you change the original question. This has led the thoughtful of your ilk to recognize that religion had better stick with things that can’t be disproven. You would be burned at the stake years ago, and disrespected widely today, for thinking the earth is millions of years old. Religion evolves.

I’ll tell you again what you’ve been told many times before==evolution does NOT PROCEED BY CHANCE. Evolution did not proceed from bird to monkey nor from monkey to us. When you so clearly demonstrate your complete incompetency in a subject area, appreciation of any subtlety is illusory–so goes your eukaryotic cell structure.

Beyond that, even if “everything” you illogically and ignorantly think was true==why submit to the authority of anyone but yourself? I am anti-theist. I’m sure god appreciates his creation utilizing his freewill as he intended.”

I literally have no idea what on earth your going on about? I must have missed something because as far as i remember you were using the missing link to justify a scientific theory… which has had its fair share of hoaxes… Poof goes the proof there as well. I never said this was Noah’s ark any way? I don’t care if they find it or not just as you don’t care if they find a missing link or not. And if you’d please explain the important points im missing about evolution that im so ignorant about! Explain the lack of evidence of thousands of supposed missing links, why genetic mutation is almost exclusively destructive and that genetic variation only creates diversification amongst species not a new species.

Evolutionists have just as much to prove as creationists and have just as much faith in their science!

  7. JimD says:

Just like that OTHER HOAX – THE SHROUD OF TURIN !!!

Barnum had it right – “There’s a sucker born every minute!” …

  8. bobbo, the evangelical anti-theist says:

Greg–yea, I’ve noticed the great similarities in our opinions (not attitudes) on many subjects other than religion. I wonder if we are but opposite doppelgangers to one another? Too upsetting?

Since we can do little but ping pong back and forth, I do spot one issue where a dialectic might proceed: use of the dictionary.

When dealing with thoughts of science vs religion, its good to try and find some points of common agreement? What better than a dictionary? After all, we think with words and when we find our use of a word is incorrect and we change because of that objective third party generally accepted reference, its that process, not the identification of the word itself, that is beneficial.

    “I thought X, and now I think Y.” is a good process.

“Are we men of Science?”==asking the question admits that some/many/most will answer “No.”

  9. bobbo, the evangelical anti-theist says:

#135–john==you need to stop posting the entire referenced post. Name/number is sufficient.

I believe you started this by saying at #87: “We all apparently originated from one source anyway… be it adam and eve or a monkey or a crustacean… why cant we find that in our DNA?”

We do find an unbroken chain of evolutionary cellular biology that links highly advanced homo sapiens all the way back to single cell entities.

The evidence is OVERWHELMING that we evolved over time from slime. It would be different if the evidence was all other creatures metabolizing sugar in a certain way but humans metabolizing it in a different way. Sulfur based rather than carbon based or whatever. Instead, we are but one evolved whole, not a miraculous intervention.

Anyone arguing against evolution is a fool.

  10. Glenn E. says:

I’m glad they didn’t REALLY find it. And I hope they never will. I’m sure that if God has anything to do with this, he won’t allow the Ark to be found, either. Such “evidence” would remove the need for faith. And just prove an excuse for the religious fanatics to “cleanse the earth” of the non-believers. Rather than do anything positive, to everyone’s benefit, with the news. Do we really need any more of that, after suffering the Islamic radicals’ activities? And they’ve had nothing but the Koran to go by (after distorting it). It the bones of Mohammad were to be found. No telling how much more their destructive zeal would be ramped up.

I once heard this humorous saying. “If you find the Buddha by the side of the road, kill him.” Likewise, if Noah’s Ark should ever REALLY turn up, NUKE IT FAST!

  11. Buzz says:

What part of “scientific” and “Old Testament” doesn’t add up to “oxymoron?”

    Ever?

Adam? Eve? Sodom and Gomorrah? Plagues of Egypt? etc?
