JERUSALEM—Israel on Sunday lifted a ban on Apple Inc.’s popular iPad tablet computer, ending restrictions that had been imposed over concerns the gadget’s wireless signal could disrupt other devices.

Communications Ministry officials conducted “intensive technical scrutiny in a controlled laboratory” before deciding to allow the iPad into the country, said Yechiel Shabi, a ministry spokesman.

Israel announced the ban shortly after the iPad’s April 3 launch in the U.S. Officials said at least 10 of the flat, touchscreen computers were seized at the country’s international airport. Mr. Shabi said owners of the confiscated iPads would be permitted to retrieve them.

Whew! That’s a load off my mind! I was so worried.

  2. Jopa says:

As an Israeli I must say that that was a weird episode…

Anyway, can’t wait to try out one of these iPads! 😛

Hopefully there will now be peace in the middle east.

  4. applesauce says:

    Every country should ban them.

  5. Smartone says:

Did they also ban cell phones? The excuse they gave for the ban is bogus. Maybe they thought it was going to help make the Palestinian’s lives better in some way – so it had to be banned.

  6. loco40 says:

Maybe they wanted to make sure that it was hackable.

  7. TThor says:

Ridiculous. This peanut state has larger concern than the paranoid US authorities that the devise shall not comply with ‘regulations’???
Shows where tax money should not go and what level of bureaucracy Israel is struggling with.

What B.S.! I’m sure it was more military paranoia about the iPad device, than how its noise might effect other things. They probably thought its Apps might make it the ultimate remote control device. And that PLO agents might get an advantage, if they allow them to import the things.

Banned in Israel. What better endorsement could a product wish for?
