A senior Iranian cleric says women who wear revealing clothing and behave promiscuously are to blame for earthquakes.

‘Many women who do not dress modestly … lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes,’ Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi was quoted as saying by Iranian media. Women in the Islamic Republic are required by law to cover from head to toe, but many, especially the young, ignore some of the more strict codes and wear tight coats and scarves pulled back that show much of the hair. ‘What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble?’ Sedighi asked during a prayer sermon Friday. ‘There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam’s moral codes.’

Seismologists have warned for at least two decades that it is likely the sprawling capital will be struck by a catastrophic quake in the near future.

Iran is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, and the cleric’s unusual explanation for why the earth shakes follows a prediction by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that a quake is certain to hit Tehran and that many of its 12 million inhabitants should relocate.

Some experts have even suggested Iran should move its capital to a less seismically active location. Tehran straddles scores of fault lines, including one more than 50 miles (80 kilometres) long, though it has not suffered a major quake since 1830.

Phew! Glad that’s cleared up.

#21 – I see I wasn’t the only one who thought of Robertson, the minute I read this. Why is that, do you suppose? I guess the US isn’t the only one to have religious crackpots, willing to exploit acts of God, and/or mother nature, and blame it on whatever flavor of the month sin, they desire to “make book” on. I put them all in the same camp, along with those who blame every weather and climate anomaly on Global Warming, and human activity.

Accept, right now, we can hardly be blamed for that volcano in Iceland. So how does that fit into their climate models? Enough of these eruptions could significantly cool the earth, and reduce the high altitude air pollution by commercial jetliners. Which always seem to get a general wavier from being thought as a major source of global air pollution, compared to cars, trucks and trains. Atlantic Ocean liners are starting to look good again, 98 years after the Titanic sank.

So? Religion/magic/superstition make people stupid. OUR ministers here think gays an invisible being who lives in the sky to cause earthquakes or hurricanes. Sorry, crazy is crazy. There aren’t magical invisible sky beings telling us what breakfast meats we can eat or who we can have sex with. Magic isn’t real. Grow up.

    From the article:

I’d say it’s about due. Relocation is not a bad idea. We used to live much closer to a plate boundary. When we read of the research that discovered the Northwest’s history of magnitude 8 and 9 earthquakes every 300-600 years (the last one was in 1700 and the tsunami killed hundreds in Japan), we decided not to stick around.

That said, I think the imam has his eye on someone he wants to “discipline” and he’s cooking up the excuse ahead of time.

And this superstitious mentality wants nuclear weapons.
