Tonight, the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow will air, for the first time ever, audiotapes of Timothy McVeigh giving his own account of why he detonated a truck filled with explosives in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. It was our country’s most destructive and deadly act of terrorism on U.S. soil prior to September 11. The bombing murdered 168 people, including more than two dozen children under the age of 6. More than 800 people were injured; damage was estimated at $652 million. Yet, McVeigh’s recorded voice, as if speaking from the grave almost nine years after his execution, says, “I feel no shame for it.”

Maddow has said the program is designed to put antigovernment extremism in perspective. “It doesn’t have to lead to violence, but it can and it has,” says Maddow in promotional spots. “We ignore this, our own very recent history of antigovernment violence and the dangers of domestic terrorism, at our peril.” According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the number of antigovernment extremist groups spiked from 149 in 2008 to 512 (127 of them militias) in 2009…

Attorney Beth Wilkinson was the prosecutor who argued for the death penalty for McVeigh. “Obviously I am gratified to know he’ll be admitting to what he was convicted of,” says Wilkinson. “That said,” she adds, “I find it disturbing that these tapes will be played at such length, giving him—once again—a platform.” She hopes that the two-hour segment will provide a perspective on extremism, not just McVeigh’s…

  1. Angus says:

Wow, the title alone makes me want wish ill upon Eideard.

  2. Tippis says:

#5 “How many men, women, and children were murdered by the Feds at Waco?”

2-7, depending on how wide a definition you want to make…

  3. tbarry says:

#30. Don’t try to tell these guys that. They will buy into anything on TV if it supports their view. And if it doesn’t, they will just blame the other political party.

    Kinda lazy that way.

  4. jollycynic says:

#27, notice how I mentioned those tests being used to exclude blacks? Who can’t keep up now?
Now that we’re ready to prove that you are a bigger person than you let on, lets return to the original question; in what way did that guy’s statement reference race at all? Conversely, how much of the “racial” context is a fabrication of your own perceptual bias?

  5. clancys_daddy says:

“Timothy McVeigh giving his own account of why he detonated a truck filled with explosives” Because he was a prick.

  6. clancys_daddy says:

37 sweet jeebus if some twit is gonna carry an “assault rifle” make it a real rifle not a piss ant 22 caliber knock off. He and his “girlfriend (I hope its a girl) need to go on a freaking diet.

  7. smittybc says:

Wow propaganda like this tells me that the activist left must be very, very, scared of the Tea Party. Although it’s beautifully ironic that they say one bombing 15 years ago that was denounced by every major political movement on the right and left, should be “ignored at our own peril.” while Jihadi suicide bombings that are celebrated as gifts to God offer, according to Michael Moore, “no terrorist threat.”

Oh and I’m sure in that report like every good documentary (for example Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West) she makes an explicit point to say that not all anti government groups are violent. She did that…. right? It’s too bad because she’s smart, she’s just drinking from lead pipes. I’m glad I only hit this blog once a week now.

  8. Guyver says:

    28, Bac,

So you are stating that during a republican administration, it is good to call liberal rebels names but during a democratic administration, the liberals need to keep their mouths shut about the right wing rebels.

I did not say one is good or bad. I’m pointing out a double standard. You are concluding that I’m saying the liberals need to keep their mouth shut.

  9. Guyver says:

    29, Bobbo,

if you don’t look like me, get the hell out. That’s his schtick.

Tancredo never said that nor implied it. It seems you feel your partisan conclusion is “the obvious”?

Nah, I think he’s concerned about people who don’t choose to assimilate want to shape the way this country evolves.

But in either case, you’re forming your own conclusions and somehow believe his comments are a smoking gun for racism. Sorry, I don’t see it. It seems you are seeing what you want to see based on no such comment on his part.

  10. Guyver says:

    27, Bobbo,

literacy tests were the foundation of Jim Crow laws. Please try to keep up.

    By Southern Democrats.

  11. Rick Cain says:

Tim McVeigh had NO EXCUSE to do what he did. There’s no justification in Waco, there’s no justification in Ruby Ridge, there’s no justification that the south lost the civil war.

McVeigh was unrepentant to the grave, and shared the same fanaticism we see with christian identity terrorists, muslim terrorists, and genocidal mass murderers.

The Tea Party should not even hint at assocations with Tim McVeigh, because frankly they’re beginning to sound like him.

  12. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

#42…Southern conservatives is more correct, and those conservatives would be Republicans in today’s political world.

  13. qb says:

This was a truly dark day. Politicizing it just makes it sadder.

  14. bac says:

    #-Guyver– “I’m pointing out a double standard”

But there is no double standard. During a republican administration, liberals whine and right wingers call liberals names. During a democratic administration, right wingers whine and liberals call right wingers names. Since there is no double standard, one might draw the conclusion that you are whining about a double standard issue in order to shut the mouths of liberals or at least irritate the liberals.

This is also retroactive for all the whiners that cried double standards back in the Bush administration.

Is America really going to replay the last eight years of political dualism?

  15. Lou Minatti says:

“Eideard and Maddow takes another turn to the utterly disgusting.”

  16. EvilPoliticians says:

Just finished watching the show. Very non-biased. Describes events as they happened except I recall a raid on a “Muslim” farm outpost in Michigan in the midst of the media fury.

But overall the show was very good. And no leaps of faith to any possible side.

  17. I thought the show sucked. It was over-dramatized to say the least with fake scenes made to look like real footage.

It will be discussed on the4 next No Agenda for its propagandistic elements. It’s part of the long term scheme to make ALL Americans suspects in terrorism by pushing the “domestic terrorist” meme in any way possible. This nutjob is the poster boy and it’s a shame people do not object to shows like this.

  18. Ah_Yea says:

My post #6: The best part was “[edited for violations of posting guidelines]”.

Strange, I think most of us could only wish the same for what Eideard posts.

What was that AnObserver said in post #16, “I know “uncensored” is part of the blogs name but it would be nice if those who wrote the post headlines and posts would censor themselves a little.”

What about Me in post #23? He got it right.

Not to mention #39 and #47.

Eideard crossed the line here. What he said and implied was beyond reason, beyond disgusting.

This isn’t “spice”. This is pure out-and-out hatred and shouldn’t be tolerated.

Stop talking about Moyers, since you are aiding his doppelganger.

Dvorak “Uncensored” is the wrong title.

Dvorak “Out of control” is more accurate.

  19. bac says:

#-Ah_Yeah and Jefferson– Are you two smoking crack? The article and film is about Tim McVey who was an antigovernment extremist that took action.

Eideard made the headline to create kneejerk reactions which obvious you two fell for the trap.

Saying OKC bommbing is a holiday for the Tea Party people is no more disgusting than calling a president and others Nazis. Neither Obama or the Tea Party people have killed people like the OKC bombing and Nazis.

The pot is definitely calling the kettle black in this blog item.

  20. Lou Minatti says:

“Eideard crossed the line here. What he said and implied was beyond reason, beyond disgusting.”

I said the same thing and my comment was deleted. There was no personal attack on my part, I just said it went over the line and sullied John’s blog.

  21. smartalix says:

Anytime someone in this country threatens violence to those who disagree with them, the United States of America dies a little inside. To threaten violence to obtain agreement is directly in opposition to the principles this country was founded on.

  22. amodedoma says:

Politicians invented this divisive two party extremist view on everything to keep the moran’s busy arguing and not get anything done. Kinda like the whole lot of you! Get back to work slackers!

  23. Ah_Yea says:

Yes, Lou. I had a follow up post that was deleted as well.

I wonder who censored our comments?

I understand that being a poster here on DU is a non-paying thankless job, but is DU so hard up for posters that JCD allows this vitriol to continue?

    bac,
Something you apparently don’t understand is in any civilized society there is a limit to acceptable public behavior. Eideard has crossed this line repeatedly. It’s not “spice”, and it’s not “baiting”, its pure and virulent hate speech.

  24. Sea Lawyer says:

#54, actually, armed uprising spurred by anti-government rhetoric is how this country was founded. It’s only the people who prefer the system as it is who are acting like this is some new and disturbing phenomenon.

  25. Dallas says:

#57 Oh so is that how you rationalize it? You’re OK then with an armed uprising every four years?

  26. smartalix says:

    57,

Does that mean if I can beat you up I can win every argument we have? What a stupid f*cking thing to say.

(If you don’t agree, come over here and try and make me change my mind. I bet I could kick your ass, which means my arguments should always dominate any discussion we have. You can have an opinion when I give it to you.)

  27. Guyver says:

    44, Olo Baggins,

#42…Southern conservatives is more correct, and those conservatives would be Republicans in today’s political world

Ha! LBJ couldn’t get Civil Rights Act passed due to racists within the Democrat Party. It was Republicans who helped him achieve it.

    46, BAC,

But there is no double standard. During a republican administration, liberals whine and right wingers call liberals names. During a democratic administration, right wingers whine and liberals call right wingers names. Since there is no double standard, one might draw the conclusion that you are whining about a double standard issue in order to shut the mouths of liberals or at least irritate the liberals.

This is also retroactive for all the whiners that cried double standards back in the Bush administration.

A trip down memory lane: http://tinyurl.com/y8lxkto

At least those people got to exercise their free speech against Bush were not labeled as seditious even if they did talk about killing people as a liberal did.

Today, liberals are dreaming up all sorts of labels to apply to the Tea Party for far less. Now the narrative is that anyone who speaks out against Obama is now a racist. Give me a break. Heck even Bobbo has been drinking the racism Kool-Aid a wee bit too much.

  28. Phydeau says:

#60 At least those people got to exercise their free speech against Bush were not labeled as seditious even if they did talk about killing people as a liberal did.

What a conveniently short memory the wackos have. Actually, when us liberals criticized Dubya we were asked, why do you hate America so much? Why do you love terrorists so much? And that was only the G-rated beginning. You wingnuts and Dubya worshipers hated and feared us.

  29. Guyver says:

    61, Phydeau,

What a conveniently short memory the wackos have. Actually, when us liberals criticized Dubya we were asked, why do you hate America so much? Why do you love terrorists so much? And that was only the G-rated beginning. You wingnuts and Dubya worshipers hated and feared us.

Is that it?!?!?! Just straight forward questions from non-Liberals? Huge contrast from the linked video provided showing Liberals at their “best”. The most interesting is the liberal at the end suggesting some people have to be killed.

But yes, the liberal wackos either have a short memory or they have a huge gaping double standard. What the Tea Party people do pales in comparison to what the Liberals have done. Yet the Tea Party gets sooooooooooo much air time?

If any non-Liberal talked about killing someone you guys would play the race card so quick. Wait! I forgot. You guys already have. Bobbo is already making those conclusions based off of sound bites and his partisan viewpoint.
