For those outside the US, the Yankees are a baseball team who won the World Series last year (again) and are often accused of buying their way into winning via huge salaries to get the best players in the game. Disclaimer: No one here at DU condones putting a hex on baseball teams, their owners or anyone else for that matter. We wouldn’t mind, however, if, just for a season or two, the Yankees somehow didn’t do quite as well as usual. However that might come about.

It’s all about entertainment. The Yankees are in one of the biggest media markets in the country. MLB flourishes when more people consume their product. And what better way to encourage such consumption than to promote the success of its product in New York City?
Follow the money.

I find it hilarious that the Yanks spent so much money on A-Rod and he hasn’t contributed much of anything in the post season. What a choker.
The video was great! A pox upon the Yankees.
#3 Bubba Ray – Yeah, right… .455 in the Divisional playoff and .429 in the Championship Series with 11 home runs in as many games. Even going 5 for 20 in the World Series he still batted over .300 for the playoffs. A-Rod sure was a choker while the rest of the team won the championship, huh Bubba?
Same thing happened to the Real Madrid Football Club (soccer) here in spain. Someone put a curse on Christiano Ronaldo. Apparently they thought they could end his career by causing him to get hurt while playing. The man’s had his injuries since then but nothing that’ll stop his career. In other words, it probably won’t work. If you see it advertised don’t miss it, the two best football teams in the world Real Madrid and Barcelona are going head to head this saturday. It promises to be ‘the’ sporting event of the year.
Hey, DJ, how about that great series against the Red Sox? Sure, that was worth the money. NOT! How about that .255 batting average in the 2009 post season? Or the .250 batting average in the 2009 world series? And 1 HR. Yeah, that was worth millions. Sure. Har! How about that .071 BA in the 2006 ALDS? Woo-Hoo! ARod sux in the post season, he’s a choker. I’m glad the Yankees are paying him millions of wasted dollars.
So he got lucky one year. Even a blind hog can find an occasional acorn.
Stats
Sorry BubbaRay…But your reference is wrong… try http://baseball-reference.com/players/r/rodrial01.shtml?redir or http://thebaseballcube.com/Playoffs/R/Alex-Rodriguez.shtml
As I said above, for the 2009 ALDS gay-Rod got 5 hits in 11 at-bats for an average of .455. In the 2009 ALCS he went 9 for 21 for a .429 average. Combine all that with his whopping .250 WS average (5 for 20) and you get a 2009 Playoff average of .365, not .255. I admit to misreading the HR stats, he only hit 6 not the 11 I state above.
I agree Rodriguez was a big choker before last season, but he had a great 2009 post season.
Think on this, baseball fans: the socioeconomic pull of baseball without the Yankees. Sans NYY, MLB becomes the MLS. Welcome to page 8 of the sports section.
