Obama Derangement Syndrome—pathological hatred of the president posing as patriotism—has infected the Republican Party. Here’s new data to prove it:
* 67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent of Americans overall) believe that Obama is a socialist.
* 57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim
* 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was “not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president”
* 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is “doing many of the things that Hitler did”
* Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama “may be the Antichrist.”

These numbers all come from a brand-new Harris poll, inspired in part by my new book Wingnuts. It demonstrates the cost of the campaign of fear and hate that has been pumped up in the service of hyper-partisanship over the past 15 months. We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and dividing the United States in the process. What might be good for ratings is bad for the country.

The poll, which surveyed 2,230 people right at the height of the health-care reform debate, also clearly shows that education is a barrier to extremism. Respondents without a college education are vastly more likely to believe such claims, while Americans with college degrees or better are less easily duped. It’s a reminder of what the 19th-century educator Horace Mann once too-loftily said: “Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge.”

    >> So what are those differences that matter then?

How about the role of government in problem solving?

    – Bush believed that the government only creates problems.
    – Obama believes good government can help people.

THIS IS HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE. This is as big as the difference between gas and water.

Honestly, if you missed that difference, you really should be reading a book or something rather than baseless opinionating on blogs.

  2. Luc says:

There is a kind of an Antichrist watch going on for decades. Nostradamus is said to have referred to Napoleon as “Pau Nay Oloron” (Napoleon Roy) and Hitler as “Hister.” Now there are people playing anagrams with “Mabus,” the name of the third Antichrist, which could be code for “Obama Barack Hussein” or “Obama US” among many other possibilities.

The third Antichrist is said to be an acclaimed charismatic leader, a description that matches Obama to some extent.

Portents of the upcoming third Antichrist war include the rise of this charismatic leader, a series of notable earthquakes and tsunamis and some “experiment” carried out “by people of the North” (Hadron Collider?) The only thing that’s missing is a big sign in the sky, such as a comet or whatever.

Sort of a hobby, like playing Clue or reading an Agatha Christie book, except you take your shots at who is going to be the Antichrist.

Sedition is a serious crime in most places. I guess that whole, freedom of speech thing has a price? America is a puzzling place, I enjoy studying you, it’s like watching the twentieth century history channel in fast forward. You both suffer and enjoy huge enthusiasm for your country. You enjoy complete freedom of self expression, inside dark locked closets – and only news organisations like Fox and CNN have the keys to let you out. I however have less freedom of self expression, I mind what I say, and everything I say can and does get used against me in a court of law.

… well, I gotta go. I think this discussion is hopeless, anyway.

If a blind and deaf person is convinced there is no difference between a clanging bell and Beethoven’s 5th, there is probably no convincing them otherwise. Both cause vibration and that’s as far as it can go with him.

    Bye.

PS: Here’s another GIGANTIC DIFFERENCE to ponder:

Bush kept the wars OFF BUDGET.
    Obama put them ON BUDGET.

If you honestly have no idea how big a difference that is, you really are blind and deaf politically.

Still I think you’re probably correct. The antichrist needs to be on the move and will probably just write his crib notes on his hand or something.

  11. jccalhoun says:

    Greg Allen said,
If you honestly have no idea how big a difference that is, you really are blind and deaf politically.

I guess I am blind and deaf politically because nothing you wrote seems to be any meaningful difference. They are differences in degree not in kind.

    – Obama, in stark contrast, has a strategy for Afghanistan, including an exit strategy (which Bush never had.) Unlike Bush, Obama believes the 911 attacks came from a group in Afghanistan, not Iraq.

Sorry, I’m no supporter of Bush but I don’t for a second think that Bush thought Iraq had anything to do with 9/11. As far as Obama’s “stark contrast” I don’t see “sending more soldiers” to be that stark of a difference.

Obama is not equally pro-regulation or pro-tax but he does believe in reasonable regulations and fair taxes.
So where are those regulations on the telephone, cable, broadcast tv, or radio companies? Companies continue to merge, removing customer choice.

How about the role of government in problem solving?
    – Bush believed that the government only creates problems.
    – Obama believes good government can help people.

Bush believed the government creates problems for companies. Obama believe the government can help solve problems for companies.

Bush kept the wars OFF BUDGET.
    Obama put them ON BUDGET.

If you honestly have no idea how big a difference that is, you really are blind and deaf politically.

I really have no difference why this matters because the budget is meaningless when it comes to the military. They aren’t going to have a bake sale to raise money any time soon…

If things are different when Obama leaves office I’ll be happy but right now all I’m seeing are differences which don’t make a difference.

  12. bobbo, the evangelical anti-theist says:

#57–DootyPants==heh, heh. You really do exemplify the type: no context at all. The thread is about and starts with the characteristics of the “Obama Derangement Syndrome” and several posts (eg #17) referred to this as no different than Bush.

So you see DootyPants, I’m fitting my comments into the history, context, and easy misthinking on this subject. It figures you wouldn’t get it. But I don’t want to take away your pride over being so ignorant, you couldn’t sip TEA without those blinders on.

College Educated “should” be less swayed by the political succubi tempting them so. Read a book, REMEMBER what was written. You can’t do that if you can only listen to the radio to begin with==so yea, college grads “should be” ODS free, but I don’t follow politics much, just trying to push it out of the way most times. Sticky stuff.

#58–jc==how many degrees make a difference???

Bush re Iraq==I agree I don’t think Bush thought Iraq had anything to do with 911=======he just SOLD IT AS IF IT DID!!! Order of Magnitudes worse!! No difference of degrees there.

Budget, on or off makes no difference to you??? Silly. When its on budget it is noticed more and demands being “balanced.” The fact that the military will get its funding is a TOTALLY UNRELATED ISSUE. You talk just like DootyPants here. Equating things that aren’t related and ignoring obvious differences.

Why, I can’t tell. Maybe you think its “clever” to have a different insight. And that is often true, just not today.

So, bottom line, you “think” Obama is like Hitler in any way that is relevant?

You think he is a “Muslim.” How many Muslims spend 20 years in a South Side Protestant Church listening to Reverand Wright?

Re: “I have nephew born in USA in very similar situation… He has the same birth document as one produced by Obama. He is NOT US citizen by choice of his parents and does NOT have proper US birth certificate and will NOT be eligible to be President of the US when he grows up)”

Unless your nephew actually gives up his US citizenship, he is a Natural Born Citizen and will be eligible at the age of 35.

Every citizen born in the USA is a Natural Born Citizen. The parents could both be foreigners; they could be illegal aliens, and the child is a Natural Born Citizen because hw was born in the USA.

This should not be surprising. Natural Born originally meant “born in the country.’ Some legislation added to it the children of US parents born overseas. But there has never been a law that requires both birth in the USA and parents who were citizens at the time of birth. One or the other is sufficient.

    Here is an example:

Mustata v. US Dept. of Justice, 179 F.3d 1017 (6th Cir. 1999) (children born in US to two Romanian citizens described as “natural born citizens” of the US):

Petitioners Marian and Lenuta Mustata are citizens of Romania. At the time of their petition, they resided in Michigan with their two minor children, who are natural born citizens of the United States.

    And another example:

Diaz-Salazar v. INS, 700 F.2d 1156 (7th Cir. 1983) (child born in US to Mexican citizen is “natural born citizen” of US):

Petitioner, Sebastian Diaz-Salazar, entered the United States illegally [from Mexico] in 1974 and has been living and working in Chicago since that time. *** The relevant facts which have been placed before the INS, BIA, and this court can be summarized as follows: The petitioner has a wife and two children under the age of three in Chicago; the children are natural-born citizens of the United States.

HOwever, as I said, if your nephew actually gives up US citizenship (Which he cannot do until he is an adult and in writing), then he ceases to be a Natural Born Citizen because he is no longer a citizen. Unless he does that, he will be eligible at the age of 35 if he lived in the USA for fourteen years.

  25. bobbo, a student of History says:

#72–shitty==next you’ll be telling us those douchebag teabaggers throwing dollar bills at the Parkinsons Victim are “actually in favor of healthcare reform.”

Hee, hee. But at least you do have a linked article to support the lie and thats a good thing. I thought regardless of their name that Pew was a respected organization. Lets see: Dems more likely to vote against Obama on FALSE BELIEF that Obama is a Muslim than are Repugs. Is that because Repugs don’t care about his religion because they can see he is black? Could be all kinds of reasons for that poll result.

So, bottom line: is the do nothing, say no, tax breaks for the rich/nothing for everyone else the best course of action for America? Is it?

    Really?
