Obama Derangement Syndrome—pathological hatred of the president posing as patriotism—has infected the Republican Party. Here’s new data to prove it:
* 67 percent of Republicans (and 40 percent of Americans overall) believe that Obama is a socialist.
* 57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim
* 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was “not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president”
* 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is “doing many of the things that Hitler did”
* Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama “may be the Antichrist.”

These numbers all come from a brand-new Harris poll, inspired in part by my new book Wingnuts. It demonstrates the cost of the campaign of fear and hate that has been pumped up in the service of hyper-partisanship over the past 15 months. We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and dividing the United States in the process. What might be good for ratings is bad for the country.

The poll, which surveyed 2,230 people right at the height of the health-care reform debate, also clearly shows that education is a barrier to extremism. Respondents without a college education are vastly more likely to believe such claims, while Americans with college degrees or better are less easily duped. It’s a reminder of what the 19th-century educator Horace Mann once too-loftily said: “Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge.”

  1. Dallas says:

Merely shows the RepubliSheep are brainwashed by their master sheepherders.

It’s a bit disturbing that a major portion of the population feel this way about their American president.

I say it’s just another legacy of the crumbling, party on it’s last breath still lashing out for being such losers.

That will teach you for letting the religious taliban attach itself to you like a parasite.

  2. Tippis says:

…and even if it were true, you’d be better off than with most other presidential alternatives ;D

  3. yankinwaoz says:

57% believe he is a muslim? WTF? Where in the f**k do they get that stupid idea?

  4. tcc3 says:

If Obama is the Antichrist, then the trump has sounded, the rapture has happened, and all of us are left behind.

    Who’s holier than thou now?

  5. Sea Lawyer says:

#1, since you are firmly in the “true believer” status on the other side, I’ll say you are hardly an objective source for calling people “RepuliSheep.”

  6. chuck says:

Is Obama Derangement Syndrome the same as Bush Derangement Syndrome?

In other words, Bush did it.

  9. Nobody says:

The ‘poll’ was a webpage put up to promote the book.
So what it really says is that of the people that clicked on random silly answers for fun – 57% also clicked the I’m a Republican box.

Not saying that some Republicans don’t believe this or that Mr Obama isn’t a muslim alien crab person working as a front for a secret cabal of african-american-jewish bankers – but this poll doesn’t prove that.

  10. Dr Dodd says:

Obama is not the Antichrist. The most obvious proof is that the AntiChrist will not need a telepromter or Nancy Pelosi telling him what to say.

However, it is clear that Obama is setting the stage for his grand entrance.

Bet you guys can’t wait for that.

  11. Phydeau says:

#14 It is only with the most morbid curiosity that I dare to ask this wingnut a question: Since Obama’s mostly continuing Dubya’s policies, does that make Dubya a fascist too in wingnut world?

Hey! Republican senators make speeches! You know who else made speeches? Hitler! Therefore, Republican senators are just like Hitler!

    Wingnut logic is easy! 🙂

  12. Buzz says:

They gave him the pejorative, “Obamacare.” Now those same Republicans must own the fruits of their own loins; “WeDon’tCare.”

These are the same politicians who hoped America would fail, so they could blame it on Obama, and presumably magically get rid of him.

Already they have universally decided (there’s your Party Line attribute borrowed from Nazi and Communist legislative operations) that the best thing they could do–you know; for the country, yeah, that’s the ticket–is Kill Obama Care. Oh, that’s going to read real good come November after all their deceptive tactics have been revealed.

Now they need to demonize Obama in the strongest possible terms so when one of their Rush Ditto Heads pulls the trigger, they can say he had it coming.

BTW: Limbaugh, how’s that new place working out, expat? What? YOU PROMISED!!!

  13. Breetai says:

Hmm… where have I seen BS like this before?

    Oh I remember. Bush.

On the “Respondents without a college education are vastly more likely to believe such claims, while Americans with college degrees or better are less easily duped.” – Not less easily duped but brainwashed by the (proven) solid Left-leaning bias of the professors at the institutions of higher learning.
This idea will be the undoing of Obama/Dem’ administration. You must not assume that most people are stupid idiots and treat them like that. Humans are clever creatures and one thing they don’t like is to be demeaned.

  16. All Republicans are idiots.

    It’s as simple as that.

  18. Mr Natural says:

The bad things that happen to us are usually things that are overlooked by prognosticators, or so bizarre that no one could actually think of it in advance. (Remember 9/11?)

The damage that Obama will do has not been dreamed of yet and when it is realized it will be generally considered to be worse than anyone could have imagined.

No I’m not a Republican. I’m tired of independent thinking people that don’t happen to agree with the far left being painted with the same brush. This IS part of the problem.

  19. Robart says:

I’m not saying that he is an opportunist but his actions and attitudes are very opportunistic.

If you think Obama is on the far left then that IS part of the problem.

The only difference between Obama and Bush is Obama wants insurance for people. Everything else from warfare to corporate welfare is more or less the same.

If Obama is “far left” then what does that make people like Dennis Kucinich and Ralph Nader?

  22. Greg Allen says:

OK. Funny. Ha. Ha. The Republicans are stupid as hell. No big secret there.

    But this is serious.

How do your run a two-party democracy when one-half are incapable of rational thought and behavior?

  23. Olo Baggins of Bywater says:

Greg….we’re about to find out, it seems.

    This parity claim is bogus.

If you honestly can’t tell the difference between Bush and Obama, you have horrible political judgment.

    It’s beyond horrible, really.

If you where a chemist, you’d see no difference between gasoline and water because both are clear, wet and cold — missing all the major distinctions that really matter.

  26. jpfitz says:

Everybody just be quiet. I guess we can agree all republicans would rather spend tax dollars on guns in the name of war and spreading freedom.

And all democrats would rather spend on helping the poor and universal healthcare.

You gotta be kidding me. This blog has PLENTY of right wingers. IMHO, this blog tends to lean right.

For example: this blog went crazy over the ACORN sting videos, dumping the crap all over ACORN.

Yet, not a single whisper about the since-revealed fact that those videos where fraudulent and doctored.

Would a liberal blog do that?

  29. Sea Lawyer says:

    #37, Faxon,

Yes, please go back to your echo chamber.

So what are those differences that matter then?

His stance on the war? nope
His stance on corporate welfare? nope
His stance of the patriot act? nope

The only other thing that I can think of where Obama’s political stance differs is that Obama doesn’t unquestioningly support Israel.
