Upgrades to Android 2.1 for the Motorola Droid starts now. Verizon is rolling it out slowly at first and is supposed to really start distributing it seriously over the next few days. Have you gotten your upgrade yet? If so – tell us about it.

UPDATE: Looks like the upgrade has been canceled due to bugs.

  1. Marc Perkel says:

I did see that there was an upgrade to the MAPS app this morning. I downloaded it and installed it and the maps app doesn’t run.

    Bad sign.

Hoping that it will run under the new 2.1 OS.

  2. Personality says:

I got the new maps app. Works great.

  3. RLF says:

    Who CARES!

  4. Marc Perkel says:

I’m getting “Activity Maps (in application Maps) is not responding.”

  5. Marc Perkel says:

Maps is working now. Must have fixed itself somehow.

  6. paddler says:

#3 people with that particular smartphone care. If you don’t then move on… nothing here for you to see

  7. bwjunior says:

Not happening. BGR is reporting that Verizon has postponed the update due to a possible bug. No new ETA has been reported.

  8. Tardhole says:

    not yet Verizon do cheas

  9. qb says:

The biggest weakness of the Android platform is that owners depend on their carrier for upgrades and even application access in some cases.

  10. Greensaab says:

@ #10 That is the way all cell phones are.

Mine didn’t get the upgrade. I do hope they make it work.

iPhone users get their OS updates directly from Apple through iTunes. It’s the model the users are starting to expect.

The problem for Android is that it leads to balkanization. Consumers don’t understand why they don’t get 2.1 features (e.g. turn navigation) when they buy an Android now. I think for the phone set to succeed Google needs to work with their partners to improve this.

I bought my Droid a week before Christmas and have always had turn by turn navigation. The problem with the Apple method is you have to hook it up to your computer.

Apple is a Byzantine empire ruled with an iron fist by a meta Oligarchy.

So of course you have to update the phone through a broadband-wired-ISP-based-app-store-cum-music-cum-video-cum-podcast-cum-apple-portal-called-itunes. Anything simpler would never work!!!!

  14. Greensaab says:

O IC. I always thought iphones updated over the air. What a dumb idiot to have to hook it up to a computer. I too have turn-by-turn on my droid out of the box. Works great too.
