Couldn’t the federal government send it directly?

Residents eager to get their state tax refunds may have a long wait this year: The recession has tied up cash and caused officials in half a dozen states to consider freezing refunds, in one case for as long as five months.

States from New York to Hawaii that have been hard-hit by the economic downturn say they have either delayed refunds or are considering doing so because of budget shortfalls.

And I doubt they are going to be paying interest on this money they are holding on to, which doesn’t belong to them; but don’t you dare be a day late paying them, lest you face a penalty.

  2. The0ne says:

So they can be late in paying us but they’ll get their hound dogs on us if we’re late on them. Not to mention that many are starving, homeless and God knows what else.

    Sounds fair to me.

  3. chuck says:

If you are in favor of universal health-care, then write to your congressman and senator now, demanding that your tax refund be used to pay for someone else’s health-care immediately.

  4. Raff says:

    I already got mine back… ha ha…

  5. jescott418 says:

I have to agree. Why a double standard on interest for late payments. We as taxpayer’s actually get a refund because we over paid.
So in theory the State you pay taxes in should have that money right? Well, I guess not. Next, they will be asking us if they can keep it until next year!

  6. GigG says:

Maybe this will teach people that it is stupid to give the state and federal government a 0% loan (which they usually pay extra to get back quick) by over withholding.

  7. birddog says:

Louisiana has been doing this for years held checks 8 months once.

  8. Jetfire says:

This is why I make sure I almost always have to pay taxes at tax time.

  9. Bernardino says:

You don’t read English any better than Cherman.

How could the Feds manipulate your STATE tax refund?

  10. Improbus says:

    @Bernardino

By not bailing out states with budget deficits?

If a state doesn’t have the money to pay refunds your going to get an IOU … if you are lucky. My bet is that they tell everyone getting a refund to go frak themselves. I suspect a lot of people are going to be adjusting their W2s after tax season.

  11. brm says:

    double standard.

  12. ECA says:

    This shows many other concerns.
How the states arent being run correctly in the first place.
How over bid jobs arent going to the BEST bidders.
How states are blackmailed to give more money on an Underbid Job..Oops we need more money. Oops, you ok’d the plans but we forgot the Fire sprinklers..

Pay raises to WHO?? WHY?? thats 5-10 times MORE then I earn.. If you arnt making min wage you make GOOD money working in the gov. and benefits OUT THE WAZOO.. what company EVER gave you FULL MEDICAL coverage.

  13. I'm Abe Lincoln And I Been A Thinkin' says:

Why the hell do people wait? eFile as soon as possible and elect direct deposit. I’ve had my refunds, state and federal for 2 weeks already.

  14. George says:

In my state you can check a box on your return to apply your refund to your next years taxes. Check that and then adjust your withholding.

As to the “double standard” of interest owed. It is no double standard. The standard policy is that government rules over you. They make the laws, and have the jails and the guns. If they decide that they’re not paying interest and you are, then you can like it or go to jail.

  15. nolimit662 says:

#15 I completely agree……file early and you’ll get your refund within a few weeks like I did. The day they stop giving my money back or hold it back for any length of time is the day I change my withholdings with my employer.

  16. mcosmi says:

they cashed my check in 3 days….3 DAYS!!!

  17. Glenn E. says:

This is all the direct result of allowing so many US corporations to farm out labor to China and other low cost labor countries. Unlike other countries (including Mexico) that insist on their businesses providing a majority of local employment and tax revenue.

With fewer and fewer US jobs, and companies paying any taxes, who the h*ll do they think is going to pay the expense of US government? They can’t keep borrowing against the future, forever. That’s just backhanded taxing of people’s saving and retirement pay, by making it all worth less. Now they don’t even want to return the excess income tax that was withheld.

Only the US Congress gets a Cost of Living (anti-inflation) increase in they pay (and maybe big corporate CEOs too). So they don’t feel the pinch in buying power, that the rest of us do. They KNOW that deficit spending is screwing up the countries economy. Or else they wouldn’t always be trying to stay ahead if it, with their own wage increases.

Meanwhile Congress opposes reforms of every kind, every time they come along. Pretending to give reforms a fair hearing, while stacking the votes against them, behind the scenes. Now you know why Congressmen don’t use email. They don’t trust a system that some hacker could crack to expose their pre-vote deals. I’m sure it’s all done via hardwired telephones, super secure from the tampering.

  18. Uncle Dave says:

It’s so nice to live in a state with no income tax.

  19. clancys_daddy says:

Last year I was due a refund. I received a notice that I was incorrect and actually owed money. I paid but disputed their finding. Three months later I got a note and a check I was right they were wrong and they paid me back. But I have this question, does this make me a pay day loan service? Cause if it does the state of Missouri owes me like 12 billion dollars in interest on that two hundred bucks.

  20. ECA says:

    #19..
    HAHAHAHA, you think so??
If you could get rid of interstate tax, shipping tax, Property tax, Utility taxes(they pay tax, and corps pass it to you) and allot of others you would be paying about <$0.50 per can of soup and $0.30 for tomato. Your meat prices would average $2 per pound, NOT $3-4.. your GAS for your car would be about $0.70 less.
ALL your tax is hidden, in the goods you buy.

  21. Benjamin says:

#14 “In my state you can check a box on your return to apply your refund to your next years taxes. Check that and then adjust your withholding.”

I got my state check within 3 days of filing. If my state pulled this BS, I would apply my refund to next year’s taxes and crank down my withholding.

When I had an internship in California, I cranked down state withholding a lot since I was only getting paid in that state for 4 months.
