1. Bud says:

I’ve noticed how biased media has become over the years. For example they were announcing years back that the discussion on global warming is over, it’s happening. Now we have some major people in the scientific community actually admitting it’s not a settled science. You have to really dig on the net to find articles arguing against the IPCC findings.
The H1N1 virus is another flop that was spun by the media. It never developed into the pandemic they were promoting.
What really really bothers me is that nobody owns up to any false claims. It’s like “oh well we were wrong.”
The results of all this paranoia is voter apathy. Nothing gets down anymore!

  2. denacron says:

A very negative effect is that inconsequential tripe and truly important matters have equal weight in this cesspit of media. Plastic faced talking heads babbling b.s.

  3. simongiln says:

The fact that the first post responding to this is partially about global warming being a global conspiracy pretty much proves the video’s point.

Conspiracies are everywhere¿ Be afraid¿ It’s not paranoia if they’re really out to get you¿

  4. deowll says:

I’ve said for years that just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean they or at least the Universe isn’t out to get you.

I’m going to die and so are you.

  5. bobbo, squashed by the dead hand of history says:

Silly video. Had to stop after 4 min.

What is glaring is how easily DISTRACTED we all are. Our society really is going into the dumper as we each select our own issues of no significance to waste our energies on.

Got your favorite conspiracy theory/religious tenet/irrelevant factoid that needs posting?

    I know I feel better.

  6. Zybch says:

Any reason a small clip of Eric Idle from a Monty Python sketch was hidden in there (2:34)?

  7. wilblake says:

“A choice between love and fear”…shoot, even without lovey stuff, we don’t need fear from this stuff. At all.

  8. I’m a great fan of Adam Curtis, he (along with Charlie Brooker) are one of the few reasons I still bittorrent media from overseas.

As to this current vid from Newswipe, there’s nothing silly about it. What else COULD you expect in a country where fear sells.. and has since at least 9-11-2001.

  9. Rabid_Monkey says:

so what exactly was the whole point of all that…..did I miss the boat?…what is new here?

  10. bobbo, words are what we think with says:

#8–Drunk==it is silly that fear/conspiracy theories sell. My impression of the video is that it jumped from one silly pop culture fear to another. If it makes better sense than that in the last half of the video, then credit me with a low tolerance for the silliness that passes as political insight these days.

  11. Colorado says:

For every 1000 conspiracies reported, one is real. We know that but it doesn’t register until day two of the report. We’re getting so use to hype that nothing could trigger paranoia. The Nixon hook is pure BS. Well, the whole tape is BS. Just grab up a bunch of sensational stuff, jam it together and say it’s related. If you believe this, I’ve got a conspiracy I’d like to tell you about.

  12. angry says:

We’ve all become Richard Nixon? Nay…we’ve all become Adam Curry!

  13. Ah_Yea says:

Hard video to get through. He finally (sorta) pulled it together in the last 30 seconds or so.

His diatribe against Richard Nixon didn’t work for me, although his idea that fear sells is obvious.

  14. freddybobs68k says:

Really like Adam Curtis work. He trys to take complicated ideas, and communicate them in ways that engage people. He seems a bit hurried in this short piece maybe. Still thought it was great.

People saying its ‘obvious’ must be the same people who have been explaining patiently for the last 10 years to everyone around them how the ‘organisation’ of Al Qaeda doesn’t exist, until after the US created it. How Egypt and torture of Sayyid Qutb is the root of the movement. Cos that’s so obvious. And yet Adam Curtis did just that in The Power of Nightmares years ago. It appears he’s actually bothering to try and find out _why_.

He’s one of very few people trying to produce documentaries that people will want to watch that actually have real insights. They may not all be exactly on target – but how about that? Tv that makes you engage your brain. Tv that isn’t some boring talking head intellectual. Tv that produces ideas, that people can talk about – and its about something that’s actually real and going on around us. Not what does BSG mean.

    Its radical and great stuff.

  15. freddybobs68k says:

Actually one of the few other Tv programs which does a good job about really talking about big and complicated issues with insight, and in an engaging way is the IQ squared debates on Bloomberg Tv.

  16. Ron Larson says:

    I call BS.

This is the same as it was 50, 100, 200, 2000 years ago.

Curtis talks about the satanic child abuse rumours like it was some new invention of the 1980’s. Remember the Salem Witch Trials?

Millians ago, it was the church, not the media, that feed fear and paranoia to control the masses.

Old boss, meet the new boss.

  17. Winston says:

What he describes is not a recent phenomena, perhaps it has just gotten worse. Recall the great Red Menace of the 50s and 60s, the McCarthy Era, etc. Media always exaggerates a threat (it’s called sensationalism) to make more money by attracting a larger audience which leads to higher ad revenues and government continues to exaggerate threats to gain what it wants as all bureaucracies do, more power and control.

  18. clancys_daddy says:

For every 1000 conspiracies reported, one is real. Sounds like a conspiracy.

  19. Zybch says:

#16 Just because this is how its been for “50, 100, 200, 2000 years” doesn’t mean its not true.

  20. billj says:

Well this explains the tea party(tea baggers). After all Rupert Murdoch owns Fox News and America is the fattest nation on the planet.
