Atlanta Journal-Constitution – Thursday, February 18, 2010:

Four women, two of them well into middle age, were discussing funeral plans for a friend when an Atlanta police officer told them to move.

Three did but one asked “why.” In answer to her question, Minnie Carey, then 61, was handcuffed, put into a police wagon and taken to jail, where she was held for nine hours.

The Citizen Review Board found that Atlanta Police officer Brandy Dolson had violated APD policies and had falsely arrested Carey.

“I was blown away,” Carey told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I had heard about people in the community being harassed by the police … It really didn’t shock me as much as it probably would have if I had not heard of people going to jail for no reason. I figured I was just another one.

“But I had the right to ask ‘why’ I had to move,” she said.

The Citizen Review Board – resurrected after the 2006 fatal police shooting of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston in her home – voted in a recent meeting to sustain Carey’s false arrest claim and the allegation that the officer had violated the department’s arrest policies.

Apparently, Atlanta’s police force have learned nothing from the Kathryn Johnston tragedy.

Checked their web site, over worked and under resourced. The “Most Wanted” page is kind of spooky.

  4. laxdude says:

In Vancouver they just throw you in the back of a cruiser, take you to Stanley park and then beat you. When the three cops are later found guilty of assault they remain on the VPD.

Maybe we should go back to hiring cops that are smart and not thugs? Or an even better idea, maybe most cops should find other jobs after 10 years?

  5. Dallas says:

Cop should be fined, 3 weeks without pay and issued a strike (three strikes your out).

I just don’t get what’s happening with cops these days.

  6. laxdude says:

It is easy, drop the barrier to entry as a cop, drop the expectation to working as a cop for more than 10 years and you change to mind place of cops. They will have to work hard to be rehired and it will be easier to fire them because you have not invested as much in their training. Make sure that only the best of the best make it past 10 years.

I would cut the number of cops, and always pair them up (randomly) with a partner.

You take out a major part of their job – bylaw and traffic enforcement away, and give it to very low level civic workers that will not need to be armed or wear a vest since they would have no idea the person they pulled over had wants or warrants.

  7. Uncle Patso says:

Sounds like the police were trying to project a strong “presence” on the street at the time, or rounding up “the usual suspects” or, in short, just harassing the neighborhood.

I think cops should be more like Detective Sgt. Arthur Dietrich (played by Steve Landesburg) on “Barney Miller.”

Being arrested is no big deal. Less paperwork today. They have to pay a lawyer. You should have the right to choose the lawyer instead of getting some political hack pub defender. The police have great lawyers, so the playing field should be level. A bad lawyer is worse than a bad cop. A police officer can shoot you, but a lawyer can screw you over for years. Look at the economy. Half of Wall Street should be in jail. We’re all getting raped daily and so are the police. The BBQ in Omaha is canceled this year.

Obey your masters!!! You are a government tool!!!

Your purpose is to Sieg Heil all government officials, pay your taxes, vote for the candidate TV tells you too. And most of all do not question state authority!!!!!!!!

If you do not do these things, you belong in prison.

  10. brm says:

here’s a start: get rid of this whole suspended-WITH-PAY bullshit.

  12. Orange says:

The first opposition is law enforcement versus intelligence. The two are very different worlds. Intelligence is oriented toward the future and seeks to inform policy makers. It lives in a blizzard of uncertainty where the “truth” will never be known for certain. Because intelligence strives above all to protect its sources and methods, intelligence officials want desperately to stay out of the chain of evidence so they will never have to testify in court. By contrast, law enforcement is not interested in policy. Rather, its business is the prosecution of cases. And law enforcement knows that if it is to make a case, it must be prepared to reveal something of how it knows what it knows.

Stay out of court guys. Why? It consumes too much time and time is money. The blizzard can get expensive too. There goes a spider. Nice and warm.

Cops are aholes, what more is there to say. All cops by DU are huge aholes. Maybe if positive posts were used more often we wouldn’t be thinking many of them are aholes in real life.

  14. tcc3 says:

Theone we think cops are assholes mostly through personal experience.

I’ve met some good cops, I’m sure alot of them are stand up guys.

But being tools of government oppression and then being bullies on top of that isnt going to win anyone any popularity awards.

It’s looking more and more like the good US of A is turning into a police state, much like the Soviet Union was back in the 60s,70s, & 80s. I’m glad to be living in Canada.

#16 – If I were told I had 30 days to live, I’d move to Canada. Every moment there is like a fucking eternity. I’d be bored to death in a week.

  17. Boy_Named_Sue says:

The cop, Brandy Dolson, is a male. Brandy grew up listening to Looking Glass perform Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl). This caused him shame and confusions. He was disgusted with his pathetic life until one day he discovered that there was one job that incompetent, simple minded, corrupt, useless people could do and have the TV, radio and newspapers line up to kiss their ass. Brandy would become a cop.

When Brandy issued a command to 61 year old Minnie and she did not drop to her knees, pucker up and firmly place a kiss on his ass, Brandy had no choice but to make her respect his authority.

  18. Don Quixote says:

Cops are lackeys who are hired because they have a relative on the council or some such city post. One city here has an area of one square mile, and retains 20 cops to police it. Police work, which amounts to setting up surveillance traps on the borders of neighboring cities. They get their police training by watching lethal weapon videos in the patrol car while waiting for a chance to pounce on someone for something. Every one of them approaches a stopped car with their holster unbuttoned and hand on their gun.

The same type mentality that elects a Cheney and his stooge Bush keeps them in office.
