1. Bud says:

Cowards! I’d sue that security company and transit company.

  2. denacron says:

The lawsuit they could face by not doing anything probably is less than if they actually did something. Could you imagine the jail time a security guard could face, if while separating the attacker, he/she inadvertently touched a “bathing suit” area?

Probably a minimum wage job with little dignity and a possibility of being jailed for performing it properly. At the very least they can be assured of having a suit filed against them no matter what they do.

I am not excusing the “security” but damn is this country screwed up!

  3. Uncle Don says:

Only that the contract would be trumpeted as the only truth, and to hell with anyone with a different opinion.

  4. ECA says:

WHO here knows the liability laws for Business??

Who knows the Liability laws for individuals??

IF you get involved you can be SUED.

You NAIL the attacker, and detain her, and you can be SUED.

  5. Mac Guy says:

The guards are probably instructed not to restrain anyone and are afraid of losing their jobs.

  6. Mikey Twit says:

Is this not PUBLIC transit? Ergo it it have PUBLIC security ie:the Police patrolling not sub contracted security firms who are pretty much useless for any real security. Sometimes privatization(which I am NOT against) goes a little too far.

  7. Jason says:

I would say that anyone else in the area who could have stepped in and done something is just as bad as the “Security guards.” If they are supposed to Observe and Report, then the common decency that applies to them also applied to other people. The uniforms could have made them more effective, but since it “isn’t their job” to stop it, they are no more responsible than other people who just watched.

  8. bobbo, do facts matter? says:

I was outraged until listening to the video. By contract the security personnel MUST only “observe and report” and it has been this way for years. The contra position is to train them and authorized them to actually be “security” and able to restrain and arrest people.

There is a “net cost” to either approach. As long as the cost of “no security” is kept low by a variety of factors, there will be no response.

The decay of society is well advanced when crimes such as this one is in essence encouraged by no enforcement.

Where is that study/post about 30% of jobs being “rules enforcement” between the haves and haves not? Subway riders????—the have not class. They don’t get security.

  9. brm says:

If I saw a girl get jumped like this, I’d get involved, and the last thing I’d have time to think of is whether or not I’d be sued.

  10. Thomas says:

I was a public defense investigator and student at UW. I used public transit all the time. I frequently overheard conversations and observed lewd behavior on the part of these so-called “security” guards on a daily basis. I interviewed these large, flightless, nearsighted poultry on a few cases and it’s clear to me this company is picking the bottom of the educational barrel.

I wouldn’t hire them to guard manure.

  11. highaman says:

This makes me sick … I wish I hadn’t watched … but I had to! Damn you internet! (I’m kidding I love you!)

  12. Benjamin says:

Anyone see the punk stealing her bag? It seemed like she was asking the security guards for help and the other girl just started whaling on her.

Fire the lot of them if they are not useful. They are not helping, so what good are they?

  13. RSweeney says:

Another great accomplishment by America’s tort lawyers.

Tort reform is the only answer. Loser pays.
    Limits on lawyer payouts.

  14. whatthe.... says:

#4 You are pathetic. I hope I am standing next to you someday when one of your family members (but hopefully you) are being stabbed, pummeled, beaten, etc. so I can watch and consider the legal ramifications for 5 minutes or so before deciding to take action.

Quite the human being you are.

  15. ikelleigh says:

I think the problem here is the proper definition of “security” when you see it written on the clothing.

When you are at a concert and you see “security” on a shirt, you know these guys will have no problem kicking your ass if you try to jump the stage.

When you are at a mall and you see “security” they are often trained to deal with shoplifters or other criminal activity.

In this case, these guys aren’t trained to be security yet they have it plainly stamped on their clothes giving anyone in these bus tunnels a false sense of security (hence her getting close to them).

Remove the vests and let them do the same job that all of the other Metro passengers do, sit around and watch.

  16. jay says:

yeah the min they get involved they get fired.

  17. Zybch says:

#6 Privatization ALWAYS goes too far.
There is not a single instance of it ever making anything better.

  18. heh. says:

They should pay convicts to be security guards, and tell them if something like this happens, they’re free to beat the living crap out of all the attackers.

  19. Breetai says:

    #15 whatthe….

He’s point out the truth not condoning it. I used to do security, varies on the area but in Kalifornia if you help someone in need you can be sued as if you caused it. It’s not what we want it’s what government has forced on us.

  20. Skeptic says:

Why isn’t anyone complaining about the camera being there?

The damn government is infringing on your freedom.

  21. Skeptic says:

Breetai, yeah!!! That damn government should have taken away everyones right to sue. DAMN THEM!!!

  22. ECA says:

    15,
    really.
If you want to know, I would have CLOSE LINED the girl and walked OFF, before anyone could have seen me. THEn pray that no one knew me, and no pictures were taken.

According to the LAW, you can not restrain or HOLD or HIT or damage a person, UNLESS authorized. YOUR only recourse is to CALL THE COPS. THAT is how bad our laws have become.
ASK any store security about WHAT can and CANT be done. THEn wonder WHY, the store tells clerk, JUST GIVE THEM THE MONEY. And if they get hurt/shot, THEY PERSONALLY have to SUE the person, as attempted Murder. AND if the clerk dies, its NOT murder, its WRONGFUL DEATH that the family HAS TO SUE FOR.

You also dont know the REASON the one girl BEAT the other. you could be protecting the WRONG person.

  23. testtubebaby says:

When it’s all said and done the real basterds in society are the crimminals and the Judges that enable them.

  24. testtubebaby says:

Security was only keeping fight from crossing yellow line.

  25. testtubebaby says:

    From Wikipedia:

A security guard, (or security officer) is usually a privately and formally employed person who is paid to protect property, assets, or people.

Often, security officers are uniformed and act to protect property by maintaining a high visibility presence to deter illegal and inappropriate actions, observing (either directly, through patrols, or by watching alarm systems or video cameras) for signs of crime, fire or disorder; then taking action and reporting any incidents to their client and emergency services as appropriate.

Since at least the Middle Ages in Europe, the term watchman was more commonly applied to this function. This term was carried over to North America where it was interchangeable with night-watchman until both terms were replaced with the modern security-based titles.

  26. R.O.P. says:

By the end of the video I was sick of hearing the “witness” bemoan how other people should have done something to help. Guess what sister, your lack of action is just reprehensible as the security guards, so quit acting all high and mighty.

  27. ikelleigh says:

#28 I think you missed the part about her being a passenger on the bus at the time.

  28. amodedoma says:

There was a time that this would have caused an outrage. Now it’s common place. First of all, you can never tell which kid might be carrying a weapon. If that doesn’t deter your noble instincts and you get involved, they may force you to defend yourself and in doing so one of the kids could get hurt, you go to jail and get sued by the parents. Finally you may get involved and the kids decide to get revenge – if you’re lucky – you may end up in the hospital.
So yeah lot’s of reasons to not get involved and just one reason to do so, cause it’s the right thing to do.
Thank god I found some place civilized to live. It’s not too late to emigrate.

  29. McCullough says:

Sorry, but I could not help but get involved, it’s in my nature. And I do carry some weight, and yes I know the consequences…but, it helps to be a hothead.

  30. Flip says:

    What Goes Around Comes Around.
THEM SO CALLED WHOOSY Security, what a joke.
The PLACE SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN.!
    STUPID COMPANY
    Just like the Bailout Joke.
