Much of the Eastern half of the US is being hit with a massive, historic (and all those other words news guys haul out for things like this) global warming snow storm. Southern Cal is having more torrential rainstorms while here at home in Vegas it’s been raining off and on which, given the drought we’ve had for years, is welcome, though a drop in the bucket of what we need. Anyone coming here for the Super Bowl tomorrow, please bring some of your extra rain or snow. Thanks!

I remember an avg of 3″ of standing snow as a KID, EVERY YEAR in OREGON/IDAHO/WASHINGTON…

well you guys on the west coast can have all that wonderful weather there, torrential rains, mud slides, fire storms, santa anna winds, earthquakes, brown air.. south gets heat and humidity, then hurricanes., east coast gets the ‘canes too…
i’ll stay right here in great lakes region and enjoy the stable weather..
I should have been buried in some good sized drifts in Ohio today…but I drove to Illinois yesterday. Surprised I didn’t run into more snow somewhere in Indiana.

Jeeze! This global warming might give us frost bite! The progressive nut jobs might have to cut back on the anal lube. The friction will help keep em warm.
I live 30 minutes east of D.C. We got 22″ here, it’s more than my snow-blower can handle. I’m just glad I have power and connectivity.

Could this just be the way they are going to cut us off from power and the internet. Then make us so dependent on the state that we have to just accept what ever they throw at us.

I am really tired of people on both sides of the Global Warming/Climate Change debate pointing at very short term “weather” incidents as some kind of proof falling on one side or the other in this debate. Sorry Dave, it looks like you are the “crazy uncle” with this story. Grow up!
Last year we had 30 days of below zero weather during winter, this year we have had only 7-9 (depending on whose thermometers are used). So shouldn’t you be post something about how “global warming” is going to make MN a tropical rain forest in a few years? Give me a break.
Please note that “Global Warming” is a misnomer. “Global Climate Change” is more accurate to the layman. A warming planet is causing changes in weather such as the greater precipitation we are seeing. When oceans warm up, more water evaporates into the atmosphere allowing for greater flooding and snow storms.

Yeah, me… 18-20″ of snow here. This is the most snowfall we have had in 11 years.
Here in Canada (Toronto), we’ve barely seen any snow. We had about half an inch earlier in the week, but that’s about it.
I just read about DC getting over 34″ of snow. WOW. The last real snow fall I remember here was before Christmas of 08.
Vancouver is having to truck in snow for the Olympics.
Getting buried under a couple of feet of snow is good for you. Builds character.
Too bad it can’t come down at the rate of 2 feet per hour. That would be cool.
Just think of how much worse things would be if there wasn’t global warming! There might have been twice as much snow!
Elkridge MD between Bal and DC NWS recorded 38 inches. County goverment comits to having all the side streets (a lot of dead end courts) cleared using front end loaders by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. School will probably resume Tuesday or Wednesday. Power still out for thousands in the MD-DC-VA area. MD uses last of 60 million dollar storm cleanup budget.
We got 22″ of wet snow in southwestern PA, the kind that sticks to the tree branches. My power went out Friday night and may not be restored until Feb 12 according to the power company. Large areas of the county are without power due to fallen trees and snapped power lines.
I had to winterize the house and go stay with my sister in Pittsburgh until power is restored.
There will be a big need for plumbers when the power returns due to pipes broken by freezing. Last night and tonight the lows will be in the single digits.
Up until 6pm Friday they were predicting we would get 8″.
I’m sure other areas of the Mid Atlancic have the same problem.

The climate is like the weather most places. Subject to change without notice.
On the other hand we haven’t been getting the weather the man made global warming crowd predicted either.
The new “in group” in climate change is predicting a cooling trend for the next decade or so due to a recurring oscillation. Of course I have my doubts about those patterns being absolutely stable.
I think it’s time to pretend we’re boy scouts and just be prepared for what mother nature sends our way.

The last time I saw the mail man (three days ago), I said “I think I’ll mail my excess snow to Al Gore”. And he laughed. I heard some local news reporter on Tv, yell “Al Gore Got It Wrong!”. Nobody has reported a thing about H1N1, since last week. I think all this snowbound isolation will great diminish the virus spreading. If not wiping it out completely. I think everyone should get a free carbon credit from Al Gore, for every inch of snow they have to shovel. I hope his mansion is snowed in solid. And doesn’t get plowed to for a month.
#12- Actually you’re only half right. Yes, warmer air causes more moisture to be absorbed into it. But it’s also retained longer. As in the tropical zones. It’s not snowing in record amounts down in Panama, just because the air is moister. There has to be corresponding cold air, to come along and trigger the rain or snow. Which implies a balance, that’s not being effected by a “global warming change”. The cold air is as much a part of the globe’s climate, as the warm air is. It’s not visiting from outer space. But apparently it’s being ignored by climate researchers. Who only stick most of their thermometers out in the warmest of States. Thus the data gets skewed, when most of it’s sampled where it’s the warmest. But all this snow shows us that the cold air has been holed up, and largely ignored, somewhere. Otherwise, it would just be a steam bath, year round, almost everywhere.
The more recent (not more accurate) phrasing “Global Climate Change” has only existed to make up for the fact that the weather isn’t behaving “warmer” as once predicted. I remember how GW was once sold as causing deserts and long term droughts. Now, that’s no longer the claim, since it has become obvious to most layman, that it’s not happening! So now it’s the notion that a “less that ideal” climate, is being caused by human pollution. But there’s no such thing as an “ideal” climate. Because weather is rarely anything but ideal. An “average” of annual climate, is simply a statistical convention. Not a reality. And Global Warming readings are supposedly an average of temperature taken globally. I say “supposedly”, because I doubt it’s adjusted for by the square mile. Taking a hundred readings in Texas, and maybe only a dozen in Alaska, tends to skew the results toward it appearing warmer. And don’t just assume the climate experts are compensating for this. Because they have never said or proved that they are. And it would be so easy for them not to, in order to justify their claims and their grant money.
I once cause our local Tv station reporting the temp. as ten degrees hotter, in the morning, than what mine was reading. I knew my gauge couldn’t be that far off. So I emailed the station and mentioned that their reading might have been effected by their roof heating up. I got a reply, that they applied some compensation to their reading to account for this. Meaning, it’s still effected by being too close to the building. But they assume that they can simply adjust the reading a certain amount. Yeah, a guesstimate, most likely. But hardly accurate. And the incorrect measurement for that morning, probably went on record anyway. Uncompensated.
So I wonder just how much of this Global Warming, is simply laziness. At not moving the recording gear far enough away from hot roofs and roadways. They take readings at major airports, out where the jet engine exhausts surely effect everything for miles. They haven’t changed how they do things since the days of the prop engine. Do they compensate for added flights, heating up the air on the ground? There was a noticeable drop in these readings, following 9-11. When all flights were grounded for three days. Gee, I wonder why it got cooler, at the airports?!
