Something has been bothering me for months and I’m wondering if anyone knows why. NewEgg has been phasing out all their AMD Opteron processors, selling only Intel. NewEgg does, however, carry a full line of AMD desktop processors. I’ve been thinking of building a new server with a pair of 6 core Opterons. So what’s up with NewEgg?

  1. Somebody_Else says:

Aren’t the new socket G34 Opterons about to come out? Maybe they’re just clearing out the old stock in anticipation.

  2. Zybch says:

just intel giving them lots of ‘advertising’ funds so long as all they sell is intel.
    Business as usual.

  3. Marc Perkel says:

#1 I was thinking that at first but it’s been several months.

  4. Animby says:

Have you asked New Egg? Might be a special order.

  5. Marc Perkel says:

I did – and got no response.

  6. amodedoma says:

Opterons in the last few years have suffered from heat issues, sensor issues, chip level errata, and supply problems. Maybe they just think the Intel’s are gonna have fewer problems.

  7. jescott418 says:

Maybe its the same reason they dropped Apple Mac’s? Lack of a decent discount? Poor quality?
    They probably have a reason.

  8. Personality says:

    Newegg Rocks! Usually.

  9. Marc Perkel says:

Yes – NewEgg does rock. I buy almost everything from them. The server that hosts dvorak.org is a dual quad core opteron that I bought at NewEgg. That’s why this has me confused and curious. When I get my next server I would rather buy it from them.

  10. The0neo says:

I think demand is too low at this point for Opterons.

  11. The King says:

    #2 Zybch,

stupid idiots as usual don’t stop to actually read anything. You were told they are selling lots of other AMD processors – just those models are not available. – GET IT dick head, or is just business as usual that you will be a moron again?

  12. aslightlycrankygeek says:

    #11, The King,

I just checked and the only Opterons available are 90nm – VERY old stuff. Newegg has always had the newest Opterons as early as anyone else as long I have been checking. Marc is right. Something is definitely up with Newegg on this.

  13. JScott says:

    Gee whadayaknow, another conspiracy.

In business, those things that sell generally stay in the catalog, those things that don’t disappear. It’s as simple as that. Who would have it any other way?

  14. aslightlycrankygeek says:

The top three supercomputers in the world use Opteron processors.

Newegg specializes in computer hardware. For them not to have any Opterons made in the last three years is very strange. This is not necessarily a “conspiracy”, but $2,700,000,000 in fines from the EU and court settlement with AMD say they have a long history of paying businesses to not offer AMD. But whether Intel has a hand in it or or not, it seems unlikely that it is just sales. Have you seen how many hundreds of thousands of crappy hardware items they stock that do not have even one review?
