I really do not see what you people have a problem with.
They probably needed to destroy the tanker and to be honest, that was probably the most economical way to do it? What would you prefer, sending a whole disposal team to get rid of it? I am sure that would be cheaper.
What about the cost of keeping them deployed? They’re there regardless and were probably tasked with destroying the tanker. A soldier’s deployment doesn’t consist entirely of blowing shit up on the side of the road.
I’m with #10 in a war zone if has major issues that can’t be fixed what the hell are they supposed to do, Let the enemy have it to find out if they can salvage any secret technology.

It’s not Half-wits that join the military. I graduated from the naval academy and worked on aircraft carriers for 23 years. There are screw-ups and you try to work with them to make them better or they flush out of the system. Oh and I’m not an half-wit. I proudly served this country. I might not have agreed with policy or politics but then again show me a job where you 100% of the time agree with policy.

It is military policy to destroy fuel tanks or other gear which have been stolen and recovered. There is no way of knowing whether it has been contaminated or booby-trapped by the enemy. This may or may not be the case here.
They must have photoshopped/muted all of the local residents that complained about this incident since I can only hear the extreme pleasure of a mission accomplished and the whining of blog commenters who are scared of actors on Oz.
No wonder fuel is so expensive.

No other explanation. It is very common when we cannot recover them to destroy such things to keep them out of the hands of the enemy. A nice tanker would make a great bomb in downtown Kabul.
It’s dangerous over there, like this video shows.
And for all you armchair pundits, this is what happens when you leave a tanker lying around.
More power to them. The problem is not with using a rifle mounted grenade launcher to get rid of a tank of flammables. That they are there is due to politics.
The politicos have worked their magic well enough that a majority of people would say we are in Iraq because of the attack on the WTC.
I would not begrudge them any pleasure they get from blowing things up. It is where they are that matters most, and that decision was made by those who live in luxury not on a battlefield.
