The Sun reports:

A British woman on a break in Dubai went to police after being raped – but SHE was arrested for having illegal sex. The 23-year-old Londoner was attacked by a waiter in a hotel toilet after celebrating her engagement to her boyfriend with drinks.

But after she admitted boozing and sharing a hotel room with her fiancé, cops in the strict Islamic state arrested her for “illegal drinking” outside licensed premises and having sex outside marriage.

Her 44-year-old fiancé, also from London, was charged with the same offences. And both were thrown in police cells by officers who paid little heed to the rape.

The devastated couple were last night understood to be on bail awaiting trial and have had their passports confiscated. They could be jailed for up to six years if found guilty of the illicit sex charge.

It amazes me that such a cool city can be that socially conservative.

#31–continued==is the notion, as I posted, that anything rich, new, and/or shiny is “cool.” But even so, I ask for clarification==Cherman appears to be painting his toes, so I’ll ask you or anyone else here: What at all is “cool” about Dubai or anywhere else that makes being vulgarly ostentatious anything at all to be well thought of??

I should have gone on to mention that being nutbag religious is anathema to anyone that is truly “socially conservative.” But perhaps that is purely definitional. ((True “Conservative”===leave other people ALONE!))

It was suggested that having an indoor snow skiing mountain was “cool.” More vulgarity on display.

I never did think the “idea” of Dubai was pragmatic, even with all the hype. Living in a gated community is no fun when you are surrounded by people that hate you. something the rich still have not learned, and will only learn when it is too late.

Poor LIEBERTARIANS—and nutbags—never understanding what their own freedom and salvation really rests on.

Geee, I’d sure like to run a packet snoop on one of Dubai’s routers….

It would be interesting to see what is being surfed on the web….

They do allow internet access don’t they?

  3. bobbo, how many points form a continuum or an opinion says:

#22–Zorkor==in civilized environments, yes, there is too much crime==but in the main, the physical and personal violence comes from criminals.

In the Middle East, as this case shows, the injury comes from THE GOVERNMENT. Big difference.

But I take your point–kill everyone who disagrees with you and once whittled down, the fascists can have a pretty good time.

  4. ECA says:

    OK,
it was NOTED long ago, about 15, that WHEN you go to OTHER COUNTRIES, you are living BY THEIR LAWS..
Who remembers the Caining of the TEEN??

According to THEIR LAWS, they will be JAILED..
they only have 1 recourse…JUMP OUT of country, FAST.

YES, the laws in That area are TOTALLY WEIRD. according to WESTERN civ. They come from over 2000 years ago.
The laws are SO severe that in 1 nation the MENS/Women differential is 100/1. AND RAPE is rampant. ANd if you ASKED to marry a lady there and said you would TAKE her to WESTERN CIV… they would Jump up and fill out the paper work FOR YOU..

  5. Abi says:

Dubai is very strict, when it comes dealing with sexual activity and how about the girl who claim she was raped, does she have solid proof?

  6. Lou says:

    Not on my vacation list.

  7. eaglescout1998 says:

Anytime one travels abroad, one should always respect the laws of wherever they travel to. Dubai may have strict laws regarding sex (at least by our standards). If that is not acceptable, don’t travel to Dubai.

That being said, even if she wasn’t having “illegal sex” with her fiance, the rape alone would probably be enough to get her locked up. How many times have there been reports of rape victims being stoned to death in counties like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Somalia?

  8. Cursor_ says:

They abuse foreign workers that slave away for their projects and we wonder that they treat other foreigners this way?

    Naive.

It amazes me that such a cool blog can have an editor that thinks dubai is cool.

  10. Animby says:

    # 2 sargasso said,”The waiter is connected, and I don’t mean in any lewd way.”

I doubt he is connected. I’ve visited Dubai many times. Almost all of their service personnel are from other countries. In my experience, seems like most of the waiters are Filipinos. While I would argue with the people above who claim they treat the help like slaves, I’d say they treat them more like pets. But very few pets have political contacts.

  11. Serious says:

#32 bobbo, take things a bit lighter yeah? if you believe that an individual who thinks that an indoor ski resort is “cool” is being vulgar aka lacking sophistication or good taste that is certainly your opinion. People have different tastes and thank whomever for that.

I really don’t understand what that has to do with libertarianism or conservatism and how that got meddled into the discussion. Some people like to live in gated communities others don’t; your choice to make regardless of political opinion.

Your definition of “cool” is different from his.. in a country where it is on average 40C, having the ability to do alternative sports inside, even skiing is something i would consider “cool”. I would certainly appreciate the ski resort as more than just a pretentious display item. To each his own.

  12. LOWER CASE SCREEN NAME says:

I wonder what Dubai would look like after a dead-center 50 megaton blast. Probably pretty cool.

  13. Animby says:

LowerCase: I think 50 megatons would be overdoing it. It’s a small place.

Serious: And they accuse Americans of conspicuous consumption! I’ve visited the indoor ski slope. Outside it was well over 40C and inside, of course, it was close to zero. Imagine the energy use: first they gotta make the water, then make the snow, then refrigerate it.

  14. smartalix says:

Just don’t go to Dubai or any of the other wackjob conservative places to have fun. I wouldn’t go party in teh US bible belt either.

  15. TThor says:

#42 Serous – Forget Bobbo… he is just a nuisance posting under a range of names here and probably a number of other places. A poor lonely soul with nothing else to do. And Bobbo, don’t bother to comment; your vitriol don’t bite…

  16. Benjamin says:

Tell me again why Islam shouldn’t be wiped off the face of the Earth. Rape victims are arrested and the rapist doesn’t even get looked at. If that alone shouldn’t be a reason to outlaw Islam, then there is the terrorism issue. The whole religion was made up by a thug leader who had multiple wives, some as young as nine.

  17. Killer Duck says:

Got to love it when a rape story can get a “humor” tag.

  18. Glass Half Full says:

What do you expect? Despite their oil money (from us) that allows them to build tall buildings, it’s a country run on magic.

Like the nutty crazy Christians here trying to “protect us from the gays”, when you run a land based on magical rules given to you by an invisible head that floats in the sky which nobody can see or hear, well, things get crazy.

  19. Dallas says:

Gotta love the Saudis. It is a male dominated society in that gray area of moving to the 21st century.

On the one end, they have the religious freakos holding on to tradition (like we have in our country). On the other end, the modern movement to woman’s rights and stature in society.

  20. OmegaMan says:

So the 23 year old was engaged to a 44 year old. Nice…don’t let that 20 year age difference get in the way.

  21. ECA says:

Do you want to SCARE the oil countries??

STOP buying oil in/for the USA. Even tho most of our oil comes from the AMERICA’s(canada, s. america, Mexico,..)
If you could get China and EUROPE to cut OIL purchases from the middle east, you MIGHT really piss those folks off, as well as those OWNERS that live in the Euro/west.

  22. clancys_daddy says:

Sounds about right for Dubai. Not in defense of Dubai but know the rules before you go anywhere outside your home county. Oh and know the rules for your own country to.

#24 is the scariest, most depressing and disgusting post here.

The problem is, many in this country agree with him. Those people know NOTHING about our Constitution and history.

If they ran the country we’d just be a christian version of Saudi Arabia. no thank you!

  25. srgothard says:

This article title is a little disingenuous. First, remember that premarital sex is a crime in Dubai. (I’m not in favor of that law.) Now consider this headline:

“Man mugged and then arrested for possession of stolen goods.” Then we find out that a man went to police and said, “I was selling stolen mp3 players downtown when someone assaulted me and stole my wallet.” Police generally don’t take crimes against criminals seriously. Unfair? Probably, but it’s a lot easier to prosecute a crime that has been confessed to, and criminals don’t make believable witnesses.

    logic FAIL

US has 6 times the murder rate?

what about 20 times the population?

  27. RBG says:

logic unFAIL. It’s described as a rate: a ratio between two measurements. In this case murders per 100,000 people.
