Reports the Daily Mail:

The bitter winter afflicting much of the Northern Hemisphere is only the start of a global trend towards cooler weather that is likely to last for 20 or 30 years, say some of the world’s most eminent climate scientists.

Their predictions – based on an analysis of natural cycles in water temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans – challenge some of the global warming orthodoxy’s most deeply cherished beliefs, such as the claim that the North Pole will be free of ice in summer by 2013.

According to the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre in Colorado, Arctic summer sea ice has increased by 409,000 square miles, or 26 per cent, since 2007 – and even the most committed global warming activists do not dispute this.

When climatologists can accurately predict the weather next week, I’ll start to listen to their predictions of what happens in a few years time.

  3. EricPhillips says:

First, there are many models for global warming, many include areas that will cool for a while due to changes in jet streams and ocean currents. The deniers think there is support for them if it does get cooler. However, the overall temp is increasing. It is like playing the slots, you can have a streak of winning pulls and think you are going to come out ahead, but in the end the slots will take you for money. We know that there is still a natural overall warming trend and it looks as though it is happening faster in comparison to the previous interglacial age, previous to the last ice age. Also, we have records of stadials, short cooling periods during an overall warming period, such as the “Little Ice Age” that allowed Leif Erickson to make it to the Americas. It was a period of far cooler weather during an overall period of warming that coincided with the Gulfstream current shutting down, which might happen again due to lack of salinity in the Northern Atlantic. This is not new: climatologists have had models of this happening for a long time.

RSweeney: #2 up there is quite a quote. A mash of pseudo Beck jargon that makes it almost indecipherable. I know it must have sounded like genius to you, but how about using plain English for the rest of us and not your masterbatorical pseudo-intellectual rhetoric.

  5. SparkyOne says:

man, it is all headed south

  6. Glenn E. says:

So all the while we were hearing how much the northern ice cap was receding. It was ACTUALLY growing. But they didn’t what to confuse us with any facts, like this, that might derail the holy cause! Now, I suppose they’re still going to blame this Mini-Ice Age on mankind.

Because the only way to justify spending more billions to fix or prevent it. Is to invent its cause being human, in the first place. So the general public will swallow the idea that anything we break, we can fix, if we throw enough money at “the problem”. In the real world, not everything is reversible. And most scientists should know this. But grant money tends to cause them to forget this.

So once again, let’s “error on the positive side”, go off half cocked, and DO ANYTHING, even if it’s the wrong thing or completely ineffectual. But for God Sake! Do something, before we all freeze solid! And… “Won’t somebody please think of the children!” Yeah, right.

Seems to me that we really don’t have to do a blessed thing. Global Warming and now this Mini-Ice Age, should cancel each other out. If anything, we should build more coal fired power plants, in the US and elsewhere (Africa would love having such a power source). And just switch to as many all electric vehicles as is practical (obviously not “18 Wheelers”,
or earth movers). Increasing our carbon output (to match the Chinese). And better neutralize the future cold spell.

But seriously, I think all this flip-flopping of, “it’s too hot”, “it’s too cold”, is just plain exploitation of short term climate trends. Like applying Day Trading strategies to climate fixin. They’re selling us the idea that we can massage the earth climate back to some ideal, if we buy, sell, and trade some kind of commodity that effects it. Naturally, somebody high up, will be profiting big from this new commodity. Probably Al Gore.

I call bullshit, the trend is towards COOLING as this chart posted on this blog clearly shows, I drew the red line thru the peaks.

  8. the Grim Peeper says:

    Hey Sparky, south is good.
The southern hemisphere is where all the best countries are.

  9. Chriswsm says:

    Three thoughts here

#1 There are many potential effects of mankinds pollution. A Freeze is within reason due to imbalances within weather pattenrs. Changes to the gulf stream would have a chilling effect on the northern hemisphere (pun intended).

#2 As a resident of the UK I can say with a fair bit of experience that the DAILY MAIL (known as the hate-mail) is a scare mungering poorly researched piece of crap.

#3 For every expert there is an equal and opposite expert

  10. EricPhillips says:

Fact: past inter-glacial period peaked warmer than it is at this time. Therefore, even without man-made pollutants it will get warmer. The only question is how much faster it will take to meet the last peak, and with extra greenhouse gasses, will it reverse after that peak or get worse. Maybe in the end it won’t make that much difference, but climate will get hotter. No doubt.

But to deny there is global warming is just plain stupid. It has happened before and will happen again.

No, wait, you got us: everything is some kind of liberal conspiracy. No liberal does anything without an evil motive. Climategate. The War on Christmas. The homosexual Agenda. Use denying this is a Christian Nation. Harry F’ing Potter teaching kids witchcraft. You got us. Congrats, the world is as nutty as you have been led to believe.

You know why I think radical Righties think Liberals trying to make the world a better place must be come kind of conspiracy. Because I never met a radical Conservative who wouldn’t save his mother’s life if it didn’t mean some kind of profit or tax dodge. How is this for a Conspiracy: Cheney helps to initiate awar against Iraq that is completely unjustified, they occupy it spending billions of taxpayer money, and his stock in Hallibuton rose in value during this period from $250,000 to be valued at over $8-million. Purely criminal, but a day at the office for the radical right. And all that money helped to ruin our economy, but Cheney and his cohorts are all living large.

    Sickening.

  11. Breetai says:

#4 good point. When these “Climate Scientists” can predict weather more accurately than the local shaman. That’s mean people shitting in my fishbowl. IT’d just be nice if these assholes would quit fucking lying.

Now if something serious does come up that’s credible the crying wolf syndrome kicks in.

  12. Dennis says:

So now we can hope to walk across the ice to clean up the Plastic Patch in the Pacific Ocean?

Or now is the time to invest in Natural Gas commodity and resources as the profits and costs are going to go up due to the cold?

Or ….which is what I think will happen…..people will just keep talking and talking and talking and nothing will ever get done until it is already here and over, and we will all look back and go “Its ‘THEIR’ fault!!”.

  13. Chriswsm says:

If we kill 3 people out of every 4 people then everything will be fine with the planet and we will have lots of resources left for the remaining persons. Wait …. that sounds too much like a conspiracy.

  14. EricPhillips says:

Dennis: As I see it, there is sufficient data to say the results are probable. It is like going to the doctor. The doctor says, “you should stop smoking or you may die of lung cancer.”

Well, you think, I may or may not. I’ll just keep smoking until I am sure. However, being sure is finding out you got the cancer, then you can’t go back and un-smoke. This is the same situation we are in.

I knew an older guy who refused to give up smoking, pointing to a then 90 year old George Burns, saying he’s been smoking and he’s in his 90’s, as if this was proof that his long life disproved the medical research. Well, one example don’t make it science.

  15. Brock says:

Eric “This is not new: climatologists have had models of this happening for a long time.”

No doubt with hardcoded parameters along with planned manipulation of scientific journals and of course a globally respected front man, like Al Gore, to bring it all into the realm of the believable. This is all to coordinate the movement of western wealth to lesser developed economies.

The ego of these kleptocrats, makes a person want to puke.

  16. David says:

It will be interesting to see how fast “warmers” jump ship when global cooling becomes the new scientific consensus.

  17. Timuchin says:

Last summer was cooler than they expected. We in Florida got prepared for a score of hurricanes — and none showed up. The stores down here didn’t buy winter clothes for the winter season. We’re freezing!

  18. clancys_daddy says:

As someone who has been through this before. May I say here we go again.

  19. Skeptic says:

How is Clancy, by the way?

  20. Crazy Smart says:

This just in, “some preeminent scientists” say that cigarettes don’t cause cancer and are in fact good for your t-zone.

NOTE: Some scientists may in fact be fully paid employees of the tobacco companies. Mileage may very.

  21. Crazy Smart says:

    ROTFLMAO

New scientist discover that the first week of January is cold (like it is every year). LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL.

Didn’t London just have the hottest day in the entire history of recorded temperatures just last year? And by the way, here in Seattle, it’s 54 today, 10 degrees above warming. You know what that means!? NOTHING. It’s about global (not local) trends (not instances) over decades or centuries. Just because the stock market drops or rises in ONE day (or week) doesn’t indicate a trend.

  22. MR says:

but i thought the science was settled?

  23. Skeptic says:

re” #23, Crazy Smart: “It’s about global (not local) trends (not instances) over decades or centuries.”

I’m glad you agree that global warming over the past century is meaningless in the larger scheme of things. It’s what I’ve been saying all along. It’s the much longer cycle that indicates we are entering another cold period.

This graph shows the average of 18 non-tree ring proxies of temperature from 12 locations around the Northern Hemisphere, published by Craig Loehle in 2007, and later revised in 2008. It clearly shows that natural climate variability happens, and these proxies coincide with known events in human history.

  24. Compukat says:

This has to be one of the WARMEST WINTER we have experienced in Thailand and the tropical areas. If anything, the weather has been too hot for the past years and not cooling down. We have yet to see ANY cold front or cool weather, only unusual rain and heat.

  25. Derek says:

LMAO Nothing in the world is more funny than watching all the liberal whores coming to change their stories. Hmmmmm… Absolutely nothing Al Gore’s crack pot scientist’s bullcrap “charts” said ANYTHING about a “mini-ice age”. YOU IDIOTIC RETARDS KNOW NOTHING! Quit screwing up the world’s economies with your idiotic theories you stupid hippies. How many lives could you have saved with the billions upon billions you morons have wasted chasing bullcrap theories.

  26. Dennis says:

EricPhillips – So, how did you know I had Cancer?

I am just stating it seems that the folks running the show need to be motivated by money rather than actually getting anything done.
Look at all the industry fighting the New Technologies? I saw it with the 8-track to cassette to CD to Digital. As long as they make money from it, no one seems to really give two cares about what damage is being cost, or what is being lost.
Regardless of what we cannot see, WE CAN SEE trash, we can see the water being polluted, we can watch the smoke billow from the towers and exhausts, YET WE DO NOTHING other than pay lip service to all this crap.

I watched the Oil fires burn in the desert, and was ordered NOT to put them out.
I watch the factories spew toxins into the gulf, and rather than STOP it, they were given a fine. Its not about saving anything anymore….simply about what pays the best and who can spout the most bull.
It got old in the 70’s….now it just seems pathetic because I seem to be the only one with a memory, and I am just a crippled old man at this point, who seems to be fighting windmills. Apathy cures nothing, but neither does being poor and shouting to the powers that be who simply ignore the facts.

  27. RBG says:

You have to understand that the weasel words that the Global Warmers use now to cover their backsides is “Climate Change.” As in no matter if the temp goes up or down, this indicates Global Warming. Ya gotta love it.

    RBG

  28. Massa Daddy says:

With way over half the World’s population in the Northern Hemisphere leaning out for light and heating switches, it’s simply a case of there being too many people. Don’t worry; SARS and N1H1 were fizzers but nature will cull appropriately quite soon I’d say.
