The six best gadgets at CES this year? While this guy may have chosen these for his mainstream, non-tech savvy audience, if this is being touted as the best CES had to offer besides incremental improvements to existing tech, then don’t expect the tech sector to do much to pull us out of the recession. 1. qb says:

    Ballmer’s keynote set the tone.

  2. Animby says:

A friend flew out from Brooklyn. Emailed me, he wished he’d stayed home with his wife.

  3. Postman says:

Leo Laport was an ass for punking you like that on his radio show.

  4. Father says:

If you’d listened to the latest Dvorak Horrowitz Unplugged, you’d know that 2010 is going to be a financial bloodbath.

No point in promoting/producing/developing new products if you’re just going to lose money every step of the way.

  5. BigBoyBC says:

Uncle Dave, you have to use a POS report from the UK to make-up crapola about CES. You couldn’t use a US news agency. Geeze, you could have used CNET and got a real picture of CES.

Between you and Dvorak’s “CESPool” on that lame-ass Mevio, it sounds like a bunch of sour grapes from a bunch of loosers who didn’t go.

  6. Postman says:

    #4,

what??? You are not going to run out and buy the $550 carbon fiber and Kevlar reinforced biometric wallet?

  7. ECA says:

I saw the device pictured above on another site.
its an LED Light and speaker system for $600.
    Its supposed to be inset.

If a new device is to be released, everyone has gotten TIRED of minor changes, it had better be a GREAT item.

Part of the problem is that Everyone is being Sue’d. Copyright is being debated and molested, and not just in the trade agreements.
You cant create a NEW thought, at this time without someone making a SNIT about it.
Im still waiting for a TV recorder with a DVD writer in a DECENT format/multi-format that can be read on ANY DVD PLAYER or computer for LESS then $200.

Innovation is taking a hit from to many sources. Minor changes to make better products is STOPPING. and many people are getting tired of buying CRAP.

Its time to FIX things, as they have all come to a head at the same time.

  8. Winston says:

Yeah, from what I’ve read from the coverage, CES was pretty lame. Netbooks are getting better with lower costs and longer battery lives, but the improvements are incremental. The 32nm Cedar Trail (vs. the just released 45nm Pine Trail) Atom due in 2011 will be my entry point due to its extremely low power consumption, greater speed and the native ability of its integrated, on-die graphics processor to handle HD video.

  9. Winston says:

Forgot to mention that by 2011, netbooks will have USB 3.0 and, probably, 6GB SATA for use with the the, by then, cheaper and faster SSDs, more reasons for me to wait.

  10. Cap'nKangaroo says:

I’ve tried to pay attention to CES but I fall asleep every time someone mentions 3-D TV.

The most interesting tech I saw all weekend was a segment on lighting (incandescent vs. halogen vs. LED) on “This Old House”. The takeaway, LED can pay for itself in 30 months and last for 10-20 years.

  11. Mick Hamblen says:

I keep waiting for a three or four terabyte hard drive to be announced. Where’s the storage increase? CESpool indeed….

  12. Jetfire says:

You forgot the biggest news at CES the Apple iSlate. It set the tone for the whole show. Now to wait until the end of the month to see if Apple is really making one.

  13. ECA says:

    #13, Jet..

    And I prefer THIS..

    http://preview.tinyurl.com/y8pxaga

Price SIZE and the ability to do it ALL.

  14. qb says:

    #13 JetFire

Google Nexus was the hottest topic by a factor of 10.

  15. qb says:

    #16 *snort*

I just caml cased Jetfire’s name out of habit.

  16. Postman says:

Sooooo… Linux is the new PalmOS on these tablets/e-readers/slate.

Are they going to do anything more than be time wasters?

Nintendo should radically improve their DS product or they are going to lose their total domination of this segment…

  17. grey_water says:

    Moderator , put a link to John C’s CES-Pool
coverage! That is brilliant and says it all.

  18. Animby says:

    # 9 Winston said,”…more reasons for me to wait.”

Playing the waiting game in technology is a sure way to never be happy.

By the time your 2011 gear is ready, there will be more new stuff just around the corner and you’ll decide to wait some more.

  19. Glenn E. says:

My theory lately is, “if it’s not made in China, you’re not going to be able to buy it, anyway.”

Every time I go shopping for something at the retail stores, I find this to be true. A lot of stuff simply can’t be found anymore. Like white vinyl contact sheets, that ISN’T called “shelf liners”. There’s black, and wood grain, and even silver (yuk!). But what happen to White vinyl adhesive sheets? My guess, China didn’t get an order to make it. So NOBODY, not Walmart, Lowes, A.C.Moores, Walgreens, Home Depot, or Staples, carries it.

So I’m suppose to toss perfectly good white plastic coated cabinet shelving, that’s a little stained. And buy brand a new bathroom cabinet. You may have noticed. They’re ALL WHITE PLASTIC coated, on the inside. So until China gets a huge order to do white vinyl contact sheeting (the permanent kind, not “light tack”). The cheaper paper liner stuff will have to do.

And this goes for a lot of other stuff you won’t be able to find readily, whatever it is. Our standard of life, has been marginalized, according to what the big conglomerates who deal with China, thing we’ll be able to afford. And that’s what you’ll find at the “big box” stores. But rarely better quality.

  20. ECA says:

    #21 correct..
    and the reason??
That in the USA they can market it and make a 2x-4x profit, and from CHINA they can make a 10x-100x profit..PERIOD.
