It certainly looks like 2010 is shaping up to be the year during which 3D finally moves from the realm of novelty into both mainstream film and TV. Satellite cable provider DirecTV has a new satellite in the air, and according to HD Guru, one of the 200 new HD stations to be broadcast from it includes the first U.S. HDTV channel in 3D.

There are still some technical hurdles to clear before you’re watching zany sitcom antics flying toward you, but the trend is clear. The satellite begins full operation in March, and existing DirecTV set-top boxes will simply need a firmware upgrade to support the 3D programming. Unfortunately, you’ll still need to pick up a 3D-capable HDTV to play it back, and that’s where the market lag will play a role in determining how fast 3D will penetrate.

Call me when they have a holodeck.

  2. spsffan says:

Call me when they put something better than reruns of Green Acres on.

  3. KMFIX says:

This just makes me wonder what that Jesus Banana would look like in 3D?

    My prediction:
First 3D Television Channel to cease broadcasting later in 2010.

I saw Avatar in 3D at the IMAX. It was very impressive. But after an hour I just wanted to watch a regular movie. And I don’t want to watch the news in 3D.

  5. Animby says:

I recently saw Avatar: $500 million and they still couldn’t resist throwing things in my face! Cheap 3-D tricks are annoying and unnecessary to tell a story. Having to put on a pair of glasses to watch TV in the comfort of my living room will be extremely annoying. The limited viewing angles will make the TV even more the center of attention and a social moderator in our homes. I’m with Chuck #4. This will be relegated to the occasional film. 24/7 3-D is not a viable broadcast model. When true 3-D (i.e. holographic) becomes a reality, sign me up.

  6. Daniel says:

Like anything else, it will be porn that makes or breaks 3D broadcasting.

  7. McCullough says:

Great…. TV sucks now, lets make it 3 times worse!!!

    I know….I’m a Luddite.

  8. MisterK says:

The 199 HD channels are far more interesting than the 1 3D one. Enough people have HD tvs now that it’s nice to have more than 30 sports channels and 10 regular HD channels coming out. I hope Rogers in Canada ups their 3D offering soon. All things considered, I’m surprised Rogers has been as on the ball as they have been with iPhone and Hi Speed internet stuff.

  9. Eric Morris says:

Could you imagine Keith Olberman in 3d?!? I didn’t know it could get any worse!!!

  10. AdmFubar says:

here is a guy that has a better idea…

    who needs glasses?

  11. soundwash says:

    Hmm…

Programming in 3 Dimensions. How clever. This will guarantee America retains it’s number one status of having the dumbest, most easily programmed and manipulated populous amongst the industrialized nations, if not the entire planet. Our brains store data in a 3D Holographic-like matrix. -much the same way “information” is stored throughout the universe.

If this 3D TV combined with HD becomes the norm, it will allow the implantation of suggestive and subliminal behavour to such depths that even your dreams will no longer be “your own.”

That most people have already lost their ability to have an original, independent thought, or how to “learn” on their own is a by-product of tv and an educational systems that only allows consensus thought, -and teaches only “what to think” not “how to think”.

3D HD TV will only serve ensure your brain obeys it’s programming, -nothing more.

The power of suggestion is a wonderful thing. -however, when abused, it can be used as a tool that can manipulate the masses as well as the individual, to any end desired.

  12. David says:

Why do we need a “3D capable” HDTV to watch the channel? You can buy DVDs with 3D movies right now that will work in any television set you own.

  13. jccalhoun says:

This is NOT the first 3d channel. It might be the first to get a big push but there was a C-Band Satellite channel several years ago that only lasted for a few months that was 3d. It was based on using lcd shutter glasses. This is the first 3d HD channel.

I can’t remember the name of the short lived 3d channel but I remember scanning through cband and seeing Robot Monster. The channel had taken the red-blue anaglyph versions of old movies and converted them to the lcd shutter format. In searching around it looks like the channel was called C3D. Here’s a story from 2000 about it.

  14. ChrisMac says:

As soon as we run out of leo laporte and JCD, no one will want this.

  15. Dallas says:

This is way cool and looking forward to it. I can see Disney making some great movies on the big screen first.

The prediction is that more than 20 3D movie titles will be out in 2010.

Three big standards hurdles have recently been cleared to make way – HDMI 1.4, BlueRay 3D and Broadcast 3D codecs for set top boxes and players.

  16. Angel H. Wong says:

Okay, all they have to do is broadcast the damn thing with the f’ed up red and blue colours distorted. In the end it’s all just engineers overthinking again.

  17. bdgbill says:

I consider myself a techie but I realy could not be less interested in 3D. I saw “UP” in 3d but I didn’t think the effect was worth wearing the dumb glasses.

  18. KarmaBaby says:

Get your HD3D shot before they run out!

  19. Buzz says:

    Predicted:

First 3D Television Channel to Close in the U.S. in 2012!

  20. 3D Television is a very amazing TV experience and everyone wants to get this experience. I think DirecTV have touched the limit of the sky after the launching of 3D TV.
