May take a couple tries – servers slammed

A Nigerian man claiming ties to al-Qaida tried to light a powder aboard a commercial jetliner before it landed Friday in Detroit in what senior U.S. officials called an attempted act of terrorism.

The man had “some kind of incendiary device he tried to ignite” in a bag strapped to his body, U.S. officials told NBC News. Other officials told NBC station WDIV-TV of Detroit that the device was a mixture of powder and liquid, which failed to ignite when the passenger tried to detonate it during the plane’s descent into Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

Two people saw the attempted attack, and a third person jumped on the man and subdued him, an airline official told NBC News. The man was being treated at the burn unit of the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, officials said.

Federal officials identified the man as Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, of Nigeria, who was traveling one way, without a return ticket. Dawn Griffith, who was waiting for her husband on the plane, said she saw the man being carted away on a gurney or bed, with his bandaged hands handcuffed to the railing…

Abdulmutallab told investigators that he wanted to set off a bomb over the United States and claimed to be connected to al-Qaida…

Uh, be careful out there, folks. The loonies are on the loose.

And the color-coded terrorism alert level thingy is already up to orange for airliners.

  2. NetPierre says:

    Attempted bombing… yeah right…
Dutch media says it was just fireworks…

Don’t let your media scare you too much…

  3. amodedoma says:

How the hell he got through security with matches or a lighter is the first question that comes to mind.

#2. “Don’t let your media scare you too much…”

    Don’t hold your breath.

  5. clancys_daddy says:

#3 TSA rules only apply in the USA not necessarily to those airports outside the US.

  6. eggman9713 says:

Why are terrorists even targeting planes anymore? The reason we havent had that much action is that all the smart terrorists know that people have a motiviation to kill you if you try to hijack a plane, as opposed to in the past when people were taught to give them whatever they wanted. This guy was a total dolt and if he were tied to Al-Qaeda, he wouldn’t have tried to pull anything so stupid. The smart terrorists are working on plans to target all of the other weak points, our power system, water supply, food supply, planes are just a drop in the bucket now.

  7. This Nigerian was pissed because no one responded to his e-mails about all of the millions he had that he wanted help transferring out of the country.

  8. murph says:

So, this guy made all those poor people go to Detroit? That is terrorism.

  9. Father says:

I hope that if I get a “full” search when I return home next week, that the agent is a relatively hot 20something (preferably Israeli) girl.

One reason to be less than enthusiastic with the TSA is that they’re mostly unattractive, old, dudes.

  10. Tippis says:

Well, that certainly lends credence to chemists who have been claiming (for some time) that the whole liquid ban is rather silly – the best anyone could hope to do in a hurry before anyone would notice, and without taking over the whole kitchen area would be to burn himself quite severely on improperly mixed chemicals…

…and if someone *does* manage to take over the kitchen and stir up something more effective, whatever he takes on board to subdue the passengers and crew is far more cause for worry than his chemistry experiment.

    ;P

  12. MIKE says:

Al-ciada at it again. It’s getting old.

  13. Animby says:

According to the LA Times: “The Department of Homeland Security said passengers might see additional screening measures on domestic and international flights because of the incident…”

As of there isn’t enough ineffectual/unnecessary theater going on already.

#7 Eggman9713 “The smart terrorists are working on plans to target all of the other weak points, our power system, water supply, food supply, planes are just a drop in the bucket now.”

Can you imagine going to the lake for a swim and having to pass through security first?

You take a Cub Scout troop to see how lettuce is grown but you have to submit their names a week in advance for security clearances. Little Johnny is on the “no farm” list because he has a chemistry set at home.

You’re trying to drive from Arizona into Nevada and need to cross the Hoover Dam. You stop for a passport check and to have dogs sniff your belongings. “What is the nature of your visit to Las Vegas?”

    It’s coming. It’s coming.

  14. MikeN says:

They’re all loonies until they succeed. Before the Cole bombing, another group tried to do the same thing, but instead got their boat stuck. Just another group of loonies.

  15. yanikinwaoz says:

Just one guy on a plane lighting himself on fire? Sounds like a lone looney to me.

  16. harold says:

And how did he get this shit on board a plane? I no longer believe anything the government says about terrorism since the US government is the biggest terrorist on the planet.

  17. Rick Cain says:

Islam is a religion of peace kiddies!

  18. Father says:

Well, let’s begin putting all people with Arabic or Muslim sounding names on seperate flights a la “colored” drinking fountains.

    Just kidding!

  19. Jopa says:

    Terrorists = Not Humans

Good god that this bomb didn’t went off and kudos to the passengers that jumped this monster.

  20. Wasted Efforts says:

Once again, all the airport screening failed to prevent an attempted attack. Yet we are still subjected to this useless waste of time.

Passenger awareness is the single best way to secure our skies as has been shown time after time.

  21. NetPierre says:

    #4 + #5 Oops.. guess i spoke too soon

#2 Hey Dude, don’t mess up next time, that was just silly.

  22. Dallas says:

Loonies are everywhere. Always were and always will be around.

The question is where and why all this anti-America sentiment? Who stirred the shit pool?

What’s scary is the same element that created this environment is now stirring the loonies in our own country against our president.

  23. Dallas says:

#25 Pedrito. As usual, you are lost for words when cornered with reality.

You know your shameless republican party are stirring the loonies in America because you have nothing else to do. Shameful.

So, did Santa bring you that mule you wanted? Watcha gonna do with the old one? Beat it with a stick and then BBQ it?

  24. Mr. Fusion says:

    pedro,

As usual, you are being your obnoxious self. It would have been so nice if Santa could have brought you some intelligence.

  25. god says:

BTW – the dude is the son of a prominent banker in Nigeria.

  26. j says:

Pedro’s a troll. His need for relevancy cries out for a good headshrink.

  27. Mike says:

After you remove your mouth from Obama’s anus Pedro, just how much of that brown is left on your lips?

  28. overtemp says:

So after Richard Reid tried to blow up one of his shoes, the TSA started making us take off our shoes at security check points. So does this latest incident, in which this yoyo tried to detonate something attached to his legs, mean that we’re now going to have to hand over our pants in the security line, too?

  29. Mike says:

Pedro, you’re as relevant as a Christmas card in July.

  30. Shadow Bone says:

It was fireworks. I heard the guy was from Yemen and I also heard that the U.S. assisted with a bombing in Yemen. By the way, Blackwater mercenaries are in Pakistan. Looks like a full takeover.
