House Republicans have a new foreign policy adviser with a controversial pedigree: Oliver North.

North, an aide on Ronald Reagan’s National Security Council who is best known for his role in the Iran-Contra scheme to sell arms to Iran and divert the funds to Nicaraguan revolutionaries in the 1980s, was the special guest at a House Republican Conference meeting on Tuesday. North was convicted on three counts related to the Iran-Contra scandal and his efforts to cover it up, but the convictions were later overturned.

Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence of Indiana and Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), who is the top Republican on the Armed Services Committee, joined forces to issue the invitation to North.

“Col. North is someone who enjoys the very broad respect of the House Republican Conference,” Pence said.

He’s baaaack!

So what is the issue? He’s never left and has worked as an advisor before this. He is tight with the GOP. Why is this a surprise.

  7. Dallas says:

    Let me see:
    * Another republican convict.
    * Participated in the transportation of cocaine and marijuana from Central and South America into the United States to fund the Contras
    * Admitted shredding government documents related to his Contra and Iranian activities

  10. MikeN says:

Achille Lauro is hijacked in 1985. They throw a Jewish American in a wheelchair overboard. Then the Egyptian government arranges for the hijackers to go free.

Oliver North planned the capture of the hijackers, eventually getting 4, but losing the mastermind who left for Iraq. Not the worst person to go to for foreign policy advice.

  11. Jägermeister says:

#2 – Troublemaker – It’s official, the GOP is suicidal.

    LMAO

    #7 – Dallas

The GOP like them that way.

  12. Dallas says:

#12 Yepper. Fits like a glove.

I thought the GOP hit bottom but was not expecting them to actually dig.

  13. Jägermeister says:

    #13 – Dallas

If Nixon was still alive, he would be hired as political advisor.

  14. qb says:

I’d vote for Tricky Dick in a heartbeat.

  15. amodedoma says:

It’s comforting to see a consensus on this scumbag, now watch some troll try to stir things up by telling us what a patriotic individual this is.

  16. jccalhoun says:

Remember all the hysteria that the right wingers love to make over Obama’s association with Bill Ayers who had all the charges against him dropped? Funny how they aren’t similarly outraged over North who was initially convicted for his actions but had the conviction overturned on appeal.

  17. MikeN says:

The Senate conducted hearings had Oliver North testify, and they were the ones that looked bad in the hearings.

  18. HeeHee says:

    Ollie is a patriotic individual.

I couldn’t resist kidding you amodedoma, but you’re right. The trolls will show up soon.

  19. bill says:

What about that Charlie guy? I hope he’s still around.

    You know, “Charlies War?”

To deal with the bad guys we need some of our own, right?

  20. StoopidFlanders says:

The libs keep brow-beating us with how the Republican party is dead and buried, yet they continue to find so much satisfaction in humping a dead horse.

Sure is interesting how the libs bring this up now. But hey, anything goes when they need a distraction to take attention away from the colossal failure that is the Barack Hussein Obama administration.

  21. qb says:

#21 Ollie North is a dead horse?

  22. JimD says:

Re: #21 – Flanders: Repukes changing DEAD HORSES midstream ?

  23. Floyd says:

    #22: Ollie North isn’t a dead horse, “he’s just restin’. Beautiful plumage…”

  24. qb says:

@JimD No, I think he means that they’re humping dead horses mid-stream and pulling out early. Or maybe they’re changing their Ollies mid-stream and humping their drowned horses.

It’s too subtle for me to figure out.

  25. a hyper-intelligent, pan-dimensional being says:

    # 14
Nixon was way to far left for these guys.

  26. jescott418 says:

I like Ollie North. He is a very dedicated and loyal American. He never seems to waver on what he stands for. That’s more then I can say for many in Congress.

  27. sargasso says:

Actually, as strange as it may sound, this might work.

  28. chuck says:

Republican hiring policy: preferably white, some military background, religious but without any morality.

Democrat hiring policy: preferably white, previously employed by Goldman-Sachs or BoA, must have never paid taxes.

  29. Wretched Gnu says:

Well, the Republicans do love their terrorist-aiding criminals…
