Chinese meteorologists covered Beijing in snow Sunday after seeding clouds to bring winter weather to the capital in an effort to combat a lingering drought, state media reported.

The unusually early snow blanketed the capital from Sunday morning and kept falling for half the day, helped by temperatures as low as minus 2 Celsius (29 Fahrenheit) and strong winds from the north, Xinhua news agency reported.

“We wont miss any opportunity of artificial precipitation since Beijing is suffering from the lingering drought,” the report quoted Zhang Qiang, head of the Beijing Weather Modification Office, as saying.

I guess if Obama can order the tides back then Beijing can order it to snow.

I’m curious to see what the impact is later in the season and downwind. If most of the water in the atmosphere ends up over beijing, it may not replenish any water stocks but just end up as runoff into the rivers.

It’s fun to watch other countries experiment with their ecosystems!!

“seeding clouds to bring winter weather to the capital in an effort to combat a lingering drought”. Ah, no. So they got a lot of farmers in the Chinese capitol, do they? I doubt this has anything to do with combating a drought, to help grow crops. More to attract the tourists to the big city. And I can’t imagine many crops benefiting from melting snow, when its too bloody cold to grow much! They should have cloud seeded over the mountains, so the rivers would get the snow melt. Dusting the city is of much agro use.

    I think it’s the following myself 😀

    1. They wanted to make sure when it does rain it’s not acid rain.

    2. They are too lazy to clean the city so they made it rain to wash all the crap into their water systems (rivers, lakes, ponds, drinking water, etc) adding to crap already there.

    3. They want more sales of coats and jackets, boosting that area of the industry so the working kids could make a 5 cents more.

    4. They were actually aiming to clear the clouds but produced rain instead. Who knows, next time instead of rain it’ll be cats and dogs, which in turn will feed the poor and hungry citizens.

    5. Bottled water is in short demand and they desperately need fresh water. Little do they know the rain has to collect the crap in the air first before they come down.

    6. They are aiming to boost their “clear sky” count. Yay for one more day!!!
