  2. I would have expected an area with signs in Russian, perhaps Bright. I googled for a better one and came up with this odd sign. [Eds, feel free to embed the photo if you like, but the link to the explanation is worth keeping as well.]

I love New York!! In how many other cities could one find a sign like this one? Or, near my old office, I had a choice of three kosher, vegetarian, Indian restaurants, of which, I personally chose none of the above. But, it’s nice to have options.

  3. Floyd says:

The picture reminds me of the “El” in Chicago.

  4. Floyd says:

Wait a minute: the signs are all in English, including “Police” on the back of what looks like a meter maid car.

  5. gal416 says:

Did anyone think this looked like the Abbey Road cover?

    [See comment #1. – ed.]

  6. spsffan says:

It reminds me of The French Connection.

  7. Jms says:

I bet it’s 86th street in Brooklyn around Bay Parkway. (That is also where the French Connection was filmed.)

  8. Roman Bellic says:

Niko ,my cousin, wanna go see some American teeteeies.

  9. #5 I always take shots to remind me of the exact location…here you go:

Are those light in synch or always red?

  12. joe says:

that’s definitely 86th street, and usually the lights are synchronized, which is great…when you’re not stuck behind a bus that discharges passengers in the street because it can’t pull over because of the support columns for the el

  13. RSL says:

It’s Brighton Beach – If you blow up the deli on the left side street corner, you will see a partially obscured “…ghton Be…” sign on their awning. Its been a Russian emigre enclave for the past twenty years. X-files once dressed up some Vancouver streets as Brighton for an episode about Russian iconography – it looked nothing like Brighton Beach…

  14. HeeHee says:

I gew up in the area. It’s Brighton Beach Avenue, between Ocean Parkway and Coney Island Avenue, one block from the ocean.

Nowadays it’s called something like Little Russia. Wasn’t called that back then.

  15. I know this neighborhood from GRAND THEFT AUTO 4. Nico Belic and his cousin have an apartment on this street! Till it gets fire bombed by the Russian Mob, that is…
