Cardinal falls victim to dengue as thousands stay away from annual religious festival | Guadalajara Reporter Traveler Alert!
“We ask you to free us from the epidemics that are currently devastating the state of Jalisco,” pleaded Guadalajara Auxiliary Bishop Jose Trinidad, in front of 7,000 worshippers outside the Instituto Cabañas. “Especially dengue, influenza and other calamities that don’t permit us to live life to the full.”Between September 27 and October 3, health authorities confirmed 373 new cases of dengue in Jalisco – the highest number ever recorded in a single week. Sixty-seven of those were the more serious hemorrhagic kind. The total number of cases of dengue confirmed in Jalisco is now 2,360, over ten percent of which are hemorrhagic.Jalisco leads the Mexican league table for suspected cases of dengue, with 26,537 probably cases recorded up until late September, more than double than second-placed Guerrero.
This story was sent in from Ivan Silva with this note:
From speaking to relatives in Mexico it appears that there is a for the most part not not very covered dengue fever outbreak in Jalisco (at least that’s where they are at). The words that this person said were “someone in every family has been affected”. According to wikipedia there is no commercially available vaccine, so why get people worked up about it?
I had a good friend who died from a different type of hemorrhagic fever and it was unspeakably horrific.
If Dengue is like that, this is bad. Very bad.
My friend had “flu like” symptoms in church on a Sunday and was gone by Wednesday in a fast, hellish death.
Those of us who knew him where absolutely stunned. It was particularly tragic because he caught it while doing volunteer charity work.
There was a very bad outbreak of dengue in southern South America last year. My friend’s niece spent several weeks in the hospital from it.
Areas in Argentina, Uruquay, Paraguay and Brazil faced Dengue back in March, April and May. Terrible, terrible disease with no vaccine.
Is dengue an emerging infectious disease?
Yes. All types of dengue virus are re-emerging worldwide and causing larger and more frequent epidemics, especially in cities in the tropics. The emergence of dengue as a major public health problem has been most dramatic in the western hemisphere. Dengue fever has reached epidemic levels in Central America and is threatening the United States.

“According to wikipedia there is no commercially available vaccine, so why get people worked up about it?”
Because you can die from it.
Now that the rainy season is on track down here, Dengue and its hemorrhagic variant are starting to pop up in parts of the nation.
Great, we just got back from a 7-day cruise to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo. Damn mosquitos were chewing on my legs. This is just freaking great news…..
For some reason vacationing in Mexico just doesn’t have the appeal it used to … even with the hookers, drugs and gun fire.
just to let you know..
i live in Guadalajara. The government`s strategy to fight the dengue & influenza is by rubbing alcohol in your hands as you walk into any public area….great thirdwolrd cure
Because it’s in Mexico! Say anything and you’re a bigot. Be careful.
“According to wikipedia there is no commercially available vaccine, so why get people worked up about it?”
So people can stay away from there!
My mother just passed away 11/22/2009. She was in Guadalajara on vacation. I wish we would have known of this outbreak. The doctors only wanted money upfront or they wouldn’t treat her. One day in the hospital cost $6K U.S. money. We had to fly her back home hoping for a miracle but it was too late. If maybe she was treated sooner but they though she had a cold. How can doctors send people home thinking they have a cold when you have an outbreak of a decease going on? You would think they can do a couple more test then hopefully more lives would be saved.
