Netanyahu, Obama and Abbas

Barack Obama, the US president, has agreed to abide by a 40-year policy of allowing Israel to keep nuclear weapons without opening them to international inspection.

The Washington Times quoted three unnamed sources as saying Obama had confirmed to Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, that he would maintain the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

The incident reportedly occurred when the two met at the White House in Washington DC in May.

Neither Israel’s embassy in Washington, nor the White House National Security Council would comment on the claim…

In an interview last week with Israel’s Channel 2 media company, Netanyahu spoke of his confidence that Obama’s recent remarks on a world free of nuclear weapons would not apply to Israel

“I want to remind you that in my first meeting with President Obama in Washington I received from him … an itemised list of the strategic understandings that have existed for many years between Israel and the United States on that issue…”

Hypocrisy continues to guide American foreign policy.

Destiny does it’s dirty work with individuals like Ben Gurion. This man, truly believed in the destiny of his people and prepared the whole thing magnificently. He knew he would be surrounded by enemies and the people that followed him there also knew. For that reason I’d never find myself in his situation. I’d’ve taken my people someplace safe, australia or something, and if god exsists I doubt he’d want me or my people in harms way or killing our neighbors. If it weren’t for religous fanaticism, palestinians and isrealis could live together, and diplomacy could take the place of threats. This situation has no solution, just consequences.
BTW I never understood why, with the prolific amount posting you do, you continue to find it necessary to resort personal afrontery.

    LOL!! That made me laugh!

She is still working for the Chief. Still shaping policy.

#34–amodedoma==I’ve heard there was talk at the time of giving them southern germany BUT when you are the chosen people, there really is only one place to go and besides the Arabs in the area fought for the germans==so why not? Its proven out after all what but god’s will would have Israel win multiple wars against those odds stacked against them? ((Other than American war supplies and intel that is.))

    It amuses me.

  4. MikeN says:

Once a country has developed nukes, there isn’t much you can do about it. So what is the hypocrisy?

  5. MikeN says:

US, Russia, China, France, UK, India, Pakistan, Israel maybe, North Korea maybe. The US has tried to keep Pakistan and North Korea from transferring their technology to other countries. Are they letting Israel give Iran nuclear weapons technology?

  6. Named says:

    31 bobbo,

“I can’t think of anyone who has lost a battle over supremacy of the land who “liked it.” Isn’t that a rather obvious constant Ben Gurion babbles?”

But that’s what you’re missing. Israel didn’t reign supreme over the Palestinians after showing up one day at Antioch. Israel was given the land WITHIN Palestine by the British. There was no consent from the inhabitants. And the mandate itself tried to ameliorate the position by claiming that there should be two states: one Palestinian and one Jewish. Well, we are very well versed in how the British mandate partition. I think India, East and West Pakistan is a great example. When the British realize they were no longer wanted, they made sure that their exit was heard for decades…

I guess, if you need an analogy, it would be that your neighbour A deigned that THEIR neighbour B should live in your house with you since your neighbour A doesn’t like their neighbour B. Is that a solution you would agree too? And if not, would you accept that you are the “vanquished” if you lost the fight? Hang out in the smallest closet in the house and say “well… they won. I’ll just sit here and suffer?”

I know what you are trying to say: might makes right. But the nuance of this particular context is so varied and delicate that you cannot take the baggage of 1919 and onward and ignore it.

  7. deowll says:

Israel will loose one war. After that there will be no Jews in the Palestine.

When that happens it’s to bloody late to say oops!

These people are crazy or they’d never have returned to Palestine.

  8. MikeN says:

    >they’d never have returned to Palestine.

A lot of the people on the Left and in the Middle East don’t believe the ‘returned’ part of that statement.

  9. Named says:

    41 MikeN,

Not sure if you’re being glib or not, but true enough, only the European Jews “returned” to Palestine. It was always populated, as was the whole of the Middle East, by Sephardic Jews…

  10. Glenn E. says:

I think this proves that the President has no real power. He’s just telling us what he’s been told that he can agree to do. The powerful corporate and foreign lobbyists are running the show, when the military Beast isn’t. US President Figurehead, and UK Prime Minister Figurehead, are just along for the ride. And whatever political party currently has the most controlling votes. They’ll kowtow to the moneyed interests that got them their jobs. Apparently Israel, got a lot of them their jobs, and continues to. As the “Jewish lobby” is one of thee largest in the US. And now you know what the reason for that, is.

If Iraq, Iran, and any other middle east nation must submit to weapons inspections. Why not Israel too. Been cause the so-called inspections are all about protect Israel from nuclear threats. Inspecting Israel’s arms and weapon production, wouldn’t protect Israel from Israel. And nobody cares about protecting everyone else FROM Israel. Because they have no lobby to speak off.

This should be seen as a violation of the principle of Separation of Church and State. Since Israel was created and is founded upon a religious belief or convection. That God gave the land to the Jews. And the Arabs took it away from them (Somehow, God couldn’t stop them. Or, God didn’t punish the Jews for some reason, by giving the land to the Arabs to look after). Hitler scared the Jews into creating a nation state, in the only place they figured they had any kind of excuse for usurping. In order to have the political and financial power it needed to survive and overwhelm all its adversaries. But I doubt they figured on the Jordanians fighting back for so long. Or the rest of the middle east, supporting Jordan.

This has all been justified over a religious belief, or excuse, to occupy the land. And the US has taken Israel’s side. No doubt because of all the lobbyist dollars involved. And also due to some sympathy, on the part of certain elected officials, who think Israel is in the right. Though they failed to feel that way about Nepal falling under Chinese rule. So it’s Ok by them for the Chinese Communists to try and wipe out Buddhism. Just don’t allow the state of Israel to loose any ground they muscled their way onto.

  11. LDA says:

The hypocrisy comes when you do not care if Israel (or America, Britain, Russia, France etc.) has nukes but you care if your enemies do, and you claim to be seeking a world without nukes. Understandable, but hypocritical. That said if Israel does have nukes, that will not help if their enemies do too, unless by help you mean wipe out your enemies at the same time they wipe out you.

F16’s can’t take out the new underground facility. I fear it may be too late to stop Iran if they want to proceed (without an all-out invasion). And the tough talking super-powers have just given them an extension on their homework.

#39–named==I’ve read your post several times. I can’t make sense of it. One disconnected private allusion next to another one.

    Just a few initial reactions:

“Might makes Right” /// There is no right or wrong about nation borders. All are maintained or lost by military/cultural power. To emphasize: there is no right or wrong in Palestine being split up by Mandate, nor in the Palestinians fighting back, nor in Israel maintaining its position. Nor will there be if Israel ceases to exist after a truck nuclear bomb is set off in Jerusalem, nor if Israel pushes all Arabs out of their sphere of enfluence. No right or wrong if Mexico annexes whatever parts of USA they can get or if USA invades Canada, or if Russia claims the Alaskan Sale was a fraud—-etc. No right or wrong about.

Analogies to neighbors in my house is completely invalid. “Laws” are maintained intranation. There are no laws internation==just “interests.”

There is nothing unique about the Israel baggage from 1919 except that unlike most other nation foundings, Israel did not out and out kill all their adversaries and they do have this loupy idea that those they vanquished have any sort of claim at all on the land they were evicted from. THAT would be like the USA continuing to talk to Spain about our annexing of Mexico===foolish. Now, we still do that with Native Americans==very foolish. They lost, they don’t have the power to complain==”Resistance is futile.”

  13. harold says:

Welcome to the Obamanation; owned and run by Israel, paid for by US taxpayers.

  14. Mr. Fusion says:

    Bobbo,

You have made several errors that seem to have effected your reasoning.

#18, #15–Jim==Iran attacked and occupied the US embassy in Tehran holding hostages for 444 days. But thats just a technicality I agree.

The CIA had stolen Iraq’s oil and imposed a cruel monarch on the people. This whole setup was run from the US Embassy. The number of Iranians killed by the Shah after the coup is unknown but not inconsiderable.

Then we get to the part where the American destroyer USS Vincennes shot down an Iranian civilian airliner with 290 people on board, including 66 children.

So how many of those Embassy hostages were killed or tortured? Do you really hold that only American lives are worth anything?

#26, Ok. For those with international ADD, what should Israel do if its taking rockets 2-3 times per day going into the 8th month?

How many Palestinians were displaced from their land in Palestine (not Israel) and Gaza at gunpoint so Israelis could steal the land and set up “settlements”. How anyone can suggest that if the Palestinians fight back Israel has some right or obligation to just kill Palestinians?

Really, you make a big deal out of some home made missile that lands in a field but think nothing of an F-16 dropping a 1000 lb bomb on an apartment building. You make no distinction between an Israeli bulldozer demolishing a home in Gaza and a Palestinian farmer wanting his olive orchard back.

You have yet to acknowledge that Palestinians still need to go through Israeli check points just to travel around their own country.

#31, #27–named==who died and made Ben Gurion the arbiter of all things Palestinian? Besides, your quote is irrelevant.

That shows an appalling lack of knowledge over the entire Israeli history and Israeli / Palestine conflict. If you need to be informed of Ben Gurion’s importance then you shouldn’t be commenting.

#36, #34–amodedoma==I’ve heard there was talk at the time of giving them southern germany BUT when you are the chosen people, there really is only one place to go and besides the Arabs in the area fought for the germans==so why not?

There was never any “talk” of “giving” anyone southern Germany. Germany was broken up into four sectors after the war and the Americans got the southern sector.

And no, the Arabs didn’t fight for the Germans. While they were not extremely pro British, for the most part they remembered their Ottoman Empire overlords, from just a generation earlier, who were Germany’s allies. While some did join the Axis, some also joined the British. Most were indifferent and only wanted to be masters in their own houses.

I like you Bobbo and think you make some very pertinent comments. On this one though you did drop the ball.

Oh, and I do agree that pedro is a troll.

  15. bobbo, the devout evangelical anti-theist says:

#49–Fusion==I am discussing most of these issues from the premises set up by named, so in places I exaggerate only a little bit to make the counterpoint.

You do take somewhat the same tack that named does though in putting a whore’s makeup over what is only an exercise in raw power. To the degree that description applies, you/named and I are not even discussing the same issues even though the ballpark appears to be Israel. My points are much broader, including but not prescribed by Israel.

Of the many points you raise, which ONE would you like to focus on? My most serious error?

  16. Mr. Fusion says:

    #51. Bobbo,

To the degree that description applies, you/named and I are not even discussing the same issues even though the ballpark appears to be Israel.

Israel? I thought this was the “pedro is a dipshit” thread. My bad.

    😉

  17. bobbo, the devout evangelical anti-theist says:

Fusion—I’m sure it was my reference to “whore’s makeup” that misled you.

Still–just about every adjective you used in your criticism is irrelevant to the point I was making and will always make when it comes to real politik.

Morality ain’t got nuthin to do wit it.
