I was reading the text of Obama’s speech to students today and here’s what I found: it was focused basically on hard work and doing your homework (no political or scary stuff like the right-wingers said), but I noted some peculiar parts, which I think you guys will like:

That’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school.

You will obey, obey, obey…

If you get a bad grade, that doesn’t mean you’re stupid, it just means you need to spend more time studying.

I had quite a laugh. If you guys see anything else that’s funny or plain weird, post it on the comments.

  1. bobbo, its complicated says:

Most of schooling is about socialization, whatever academics gets transferred along the way is but a happy coincidence.

Students should obey, or learn when it benefits them to disobey==one of the best lessons I learned in school.

Too many students are dumb–but we can only encourage them nontheless until more fitting arrangements can be made like shipping them to South America.

  2. Stars & Bars says:

    “I hope you’ll all wash your hands a lot…”

“I’m working hard to fix up your classrooms…”

    “Protect our environment…”

“There were times when I was lonely and felt like I didn’t fit in…” (like now!)

  3. noname says:

“I had quite a laugh. If you guys see anything else that’s funny or plain weird, post it on the comments.”

Yes I am laughing too. I think your post and blind hatred is pretty funny and weird.

  4. ScotterOtter says:

What’s funny and just plain weird is that the president’s speech to students is a debatable topic.

  5. bill says:

Where are the parents? All of this stuff should have been ‘discussed’ by the parents or guardian. Right?

You remember the line… “Everything I ever learned I learned in the first grade… ” Or from my parents.

    WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT?

Now add the President. I think ScotterOtter is totally correct.

Somebody has to act like the adult here in the US.

  6. Sam says:

My kid is not going to school that day. I will defend his right to act like an a** to his teachers because he can’t read and won’t do his homework.

  7. SparkyOne says:

This is one of the reasons that my wife and I decided to home school our two kids. They both managed to grow and thrive without this BS from POLS.

  8. StayAway says:

So I wasn’t always as focused as I should have been. I did some things I’m not proud of, and got in more trouble than I should have.

Please this is a total waste of time. Not one kid will change because of what this idiot says. It’s the parents that have the biggest effect on a child. And I do not want my child to receive the message above, you can be a drug pushing, drug using idiot and still become president. Its OK to make mistakes….No it is not OK. It does matter what you do.

    =====================

What president are we talking about?

  10. Ah_Yea says:

    I like the speech.

  11. Dallas says:

The speech is great and I found no ‘peculiar’ parts. But the again, I wasn’t looking for any.

  12. pecker says:

The speech seemed refreshingly bland to me. If I was on his speechwriting team the only thing I would have changed would have been these lines:

“You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military?”

It just seems a bit top-heavy with public sector careers. At least cut-out the Military and add Engineer to the list – once the currency devalues America will have to start making things again.

  13. echeola says:

Bland bland bland. Nothing to see here.

  14. chuck says:

Of course there’s nothing scary in the speech that the nutball right-wingers can jump all over. That’s the point – just release a nice, boring speech and make everyone watch it. Then the story is how the nutball right-wingers tried to make a story out of nothing.

Then, next year, another speech, which no one will cover since this year’s speech was so boring. Except next year’s speech is when he tells the kids to drink the kool-aid.

  15. ramuno says:

So #7, you taught your home schooled kids that “work hard and do your homework” is BS?

  16. Ah_Yea says:

    #16 Alfred1,

    I got the reference!!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Invaders

    I’m so proud of myself…

  17. brm says:

    The story isn’t the speech.

The real story is how the President was using a Cabinet-level department to distribute talking points to classrooms.

The Dept. of Education is *not* allowed to do this.

Imagine the uproar if Bush had Rove write questions like, “how can I help the President?” when they were trying to ram the Patriot Act through.

Mostly harmless, but a terrible precedent, and an abuse of the office.

  18. Weary Reaper says:

  19. Animby says:

“How can I help the President?” That “inartfully worded” was changed to something very vanilla. Almost as bland as this speech it took them a week to write … err …release. I’d like to see the speech he originally planned to deliver to them. Maybe I’m wrong. I hope I am. But Obama and his administration lend themselves so well to conspiracy theories. If the speech was this innocuous, why didn’t he release it earlier. A printed version along with the suggested lesson plan would have been nice for the teachers and cleared up the controversy before it started. But this is the transparent president! Transparent as mud.

Warning! Warning! One Term President Alert…

  20. Dallas says:

All these angry repugs in here on a holiday weekend!

It’s not like the president is calling for an emergency session of Congress for their medical opinion if a vegetable lying in a hospital bed for 30 years should die with dignity. Sheesh, sheeple!

Our leader is talking to your fat ass kids to lay off the cheese whiz and study hard. This is a good thing.

  21. Ex Republican says:

I have been a Republican for a long time. All the so-called spokesman for the party need to find a real job and stop converting GOP to Democrat’s.
If a democrate discovered a cure for cancer, Rush would say there putting funeral homes out of work.

    All this crap must stop.

  22. Pat says:

Nothing peculiar about the speech. You’re just an idiot using up your mamas bandwidth. Go ruin another blog you shit.

  23. C.S. says:

What’s funny is how much energy the Obama-haters have spent trying to find something wrong with this speech. Would that they could turn this towards some productive use.

  24. B.Dog says:

Gosh, he’s just like a Big Brother.

  25. ± says:

[said Obama] That’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school.

[said Guilherme Cherman] You will obey, obey, obey…

[said Guilherme Cherman] I had quite a laugh . If you guys see anything else that’s funny or plain weird, post it on the comments.

I think it is somewhere between funny and weird with a large dollop of sadness thrown in that you think the first line is a negative thing. This is way more of a commentary on you than Obama.

PS — Rs and Ds suck and the people who elect them [their bosses] are the reason this country is failing

  26. noname says:

I’d like to see how hypocrites # 32 Alfred1, # 30 pedro, # 24 Animby and # 20 brm crap on a Former Librarian for supporting the speech.

I guess we will have to wait and see their responses.

  27. brm says:

    #34:

ps: I didn’t like Bush either. I’m not a Republican. You lose.

  28. deowll says:

If you found anything “funny” in the speech after the reaction to the first study guides created by the department of education it would mean that Obama is seriously stupid.

Things got cleaned up just like Jones got cleaned up.

  29. jccalhoun says:

“As for me, I pleased it did.”

I guess someone should have stayed in school a little bit longer…

  30. noname says:

    # 39 Alfred1

ps: I am glad an ever growing number of people think you (Alfred1) are schizophrenic or just nuts…. you have earned that.
