Grand Haven’s Lake Michigan lighthouses are the prime location sought by an animal rights group for its anti-fishing campaign headquarters.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has applied through a federal program to take over the structures and lighted catwalk that are frequently photographed for dramatic sunsets, thick winter ice and crashing waves.
[…]”We want to renovate the Grand Haven lights as a memorial to the billions of fish killed annually by sport fishermen, as well as for their flesh (commercial fishing industry),” said Lindsey Rajt, manager of PETA’s campaigns department. “We also want to make it a fun and educational place.”
Tentative PETA plans call for an education center, where visitors would learn about fish. There also would be a cafe, offering vegetarian fare including “faux fish.”
Signs would likely announce the lighthouse as home of PETA’s Fish Empathy Center.
But wouldn’t a “faux fish” sandwich be insulting to fish?
I keep thinking/hoping that PETA is just a prank from The Onion.
“Sea Kitten Holocaust Museum?”
Ha..dude, I almost choked on my Filet-O-Fish Sammich, please stop.
I don’t know. I have been fishing all summer and finally caught a couple of fish good enough to keep and eat. I felt bad as I filleted the meat from the fish I caught. I didn’t feel bad after I cooked the fish in butter though.
Knowing that Grand Haven tourist industry includes sport fishing, PETA’s idea will probably sink like an anchor.
Oddly, my wife’s land fish have a taste for sea kittens.
When I was a kiddie, I shot a little bird with a b-b gun. Killed it dead. I was very sad. I stopped throwing rocks at cats, frying ants in the sun, salting snails. Then my wifey turned out to be a “real” animal lover and in fact over time, I stopped killing spiders, house flies, and such.
I am very conscious of what I think is true that cruelty to animals is a sign of underdeveloped/missing empathy. Just yesterday a squirrel ran out into the street, and I ran right over him. It would be stupid to risk my life or other’s lives for a dumb animal. I’m not stupid afterall.
Animals, including all pets, were made for eating. Should all be killed with the utmost kindness.
I like fishing. I just don’t know if I want to end an animal’s life just for sport. My conscience was quelled when I ate the fish though.
#7–Benji==I read your post #3, and now I have read your post #7. What are you trying to tell us–or what issue exactly are you wrestling with?
Maybe “the community” can talk you thru what looks like a bad acid trip.
Can you remember how to call 911?
Its “ok” to eat fish as long as they don’t have lips, and some fish certainly do.
You are all being tricked into thinking PETA is behind this. In fact, PETA is only a pawn for the organization at the heart of nearly all water-related efforts to curb man’s desire to eat tasty water-dwelling creatures.
First In – Still Here, or FISH, is an elite group of super-intelligent underwater organisms that believe an all-powerful being from another galaxy populated our planet with the various sea creatures, and that someday homosapiens (a lower life-form) will evolve to dwell in the oceans of our planet. FISH believes that unless efforts are made now to subdue homosapiens, they will enter the world’s oceans and eat all of the ocean dwelling creatures.
Even now, members of PETA are being brainwashed so when they enter the world’s oceans they will be slaves to FISH.
My suggestion, trick FISH and throw PETA members into the world’s water bodies now. When FISH come to claim their new slaves, we can hook the little buggers and eat them up.
1) It ain’t gunna fly.
2) Small things amuse small minds.

0 then what?
I eat fish and other forms of meat, but I don’t enjoy killing them.
I find it a little disturbing that some people enjoy killing animals. Kind of in the same league as guys who beat their wives.
IMHO all animals should be treated with respect and meat seen as a luxury item. In light of all the crap that’s injected into animals in order to boost output and fill some greedy assholes wallet, I try to buy free range and I am prepared to pay more for meat from animals that have lead a (reasonably) good life.
PETA really don’t do themselves any favours by being so extreme. Most people dont give a rats ass about animal welfare, but PETA only aggravate this attitude.
Sparky Jones, you have no idea how correct you may be. I once passed through a small decrepit town called Innsmouth in Massachusetts where I saw things not meant for us to see…..
I find it offensive to use the word “Holocaust”, which in modern vernacular refers to the systematic Nazi extermination of the Jewish people, when referring to fishing, a human activity going back before recorded time.
Instead of the Humpty Dumptyism of PETA’s calling fish, kittens, I suggest we correctly call PETA what they are: Pussies.
Grow a f*cking pair PETA! All animals (and people) are food in the end, whether its worm food or plant food or people food is immaterial. You will not change that fact.
That does it. I’ve been looking for an excuse to move closer to the lake. I’m opening a Red Lobster in sight of the Musical Fountain.
#14 That crazy Marsh family and their sloping foreheads. Definitely something fishy going on in Innsmouth.
I sorry but PETA can go fuck themselves if they think this is going to stop people from fishing!
Why is PETA not on the list of terrorist organizations? They are as evil as ELF, ALF, EarthFirst, GreenPeace, Al Qaeda, Iran, North Korea, and any other group that wishes to exterminate the human species. Fish are not ‘sea kittens’ and PETA can jump in the ocean and join the creatures they so claim to love.
#9 – I think you’re on to something for sure, as what you wrote makes more sense than anything PETA has ever conjectured.
Fishing is a billion dollar a year sport including fishing gear, boats, gas, food, tournaments, etc. Good luck, PETA. Morans.
