’08 race worker held in damage to Colorado Democratic HQ – The Denver Post — Apparently this character is an operative for the party. I wonder how much of this is going on?

One of two people suspected of shattering 11 windows Tuesday morning at the state Democratic Party headquarters has an arrest record and a history of helping a Democratic political candidate, public records show.

Police said that about 2:20 a.m., 24-year-old Maurice Schwenkler, now in custody, and an at-large accomplice took a hammer to the picture windows displaying posters touting President Barack Obama and his health care reform efforts.

Early Tuesday, Democratic Party chairwoman Pat Waak said the damage to her building in Denver’s art district was a consequence of “an effort on the other side to stir up hate.” She tempered her statement after Schwenkler’s political history was revealed.

“This sounds like the type of Democratic tactic from the left fringe trying to make Republicans look mean-spirited,” Balmer said. “In this case, it blew up in their face. He was caught red-handed.” Schwenkler allegedly tried to conceal his identity while committing the crime by wearing a shirt over his face, a hooded sweat shirt and latex gloves, according to police descriptions.

When a Denver police officer on patrol spotted two people smashing windows, the suspects fled on bicycles.

Schwenkler was arrested after a short foot pursuit, but the other suspect sped away, police Detective Vicki Ferrari said.

This sort of thing makes more sense to me regarding the various protests than actual Republicans being motivated to do anything.

This would only be a big deal to John.

  2. Weary Reaper says:

Once again, the exception is reported as the rule.

No wonder we’re ALL leery of ANY media these days.

  3. Benjamin says:

Glad they caught this loser and revealed his politically connections. Liberals do crimes and blame them on conservatives all the time just to get sympathy.

    It’s similar to this story.

  4. The Monster's Lawyer says:

So, you’re implying that the people yelling down the Health Care Debate speakers at the Town Hall Meetings are loony lefties acting like wingnuts?

  5. Mr. Fusion says:

    I have to go with #1 & 2 and #5.

If he did this with the intent of making someone else look guilty, then throw the book at him. There shouldn’t be any of this type of crap whatever.

If he did it for any other reason, then just throw a Republican pamphlet at him.

  6. Scott H says:

The Denver Post I read reports that Schenkler is a Bash Back “anarchist” – not a Democrat.

“Alleged Colorado Democratic HQ window basher may be fan of no party”

  7. #2 How do you know THIS is an exception? I’ve been watching a lot of town hall meetings and a lot of the activity is sketchy.

And I repeat this…since when, outside of a church organized event, do the Republicans get so “activist?” They tend to be sedate grousers.

  8. Named says:

These two should get a room.

  9. MikeN says:

Did these people go to college? If so, let’s see if there were any hate crimes there while they attended. Perhaps the penalty for falsely reporting a hate crime should be the same as actually committing one. The justification for the extra penalty is the chilling effect it has on a community, and you get the same effect with a fake crime.

  10. #7 if you bothered to read the original post I cited you would have run into this sentence: “Schwenkler received $500 in November 2008 to walk door-to-door in support of Democrat Mollie Cullom, who lost her race to Republican state Rep. David Balmer of Centennial”

Yeah, big time arachist. NO connectrion to the Democrats, none whatsoever. HA.

  11. Ah_Yea says:

This guy is obviously an unstable creep, but what is much, much worse is: “Democratic Party chairwoman Pat Waak said the damage to her building in Denver’s art district was a consequence of ‘an effort on the other side to stir up hate.'”

Her instant assumption that this was a republican hate crime.

Isn’t it bad enough that Obama keeps opening his mouth and saying discriminatory/dumb things.

Do all Democrats feel discriminated? Do all Democrats feel they have something to prove?

  12. Named says:

    11 JCD,

So, does that mean Larry Craigs clients in the airport bathroom are card-carrying Republicans since they took his deposits?

I guess if you receive money for work, you are forever tied to X group, yes? I thought America was for freedom…

  13. Aaron says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if after a little digging they find a nice little deposit to his bank account dated around Aug 24 that will be from the democratic party. That would really top it!!

  14. Bobby says:

As JCD would say- “Big Surprise”. Wtg John for putting this up here.

  15. Skeptic says:

Dvorak says: “I’ve been watching a lot of town hall meetings and a lot of the activity is sketchy.”

And then has the unmitigated audacity to say:
“…since when, outside of a church organized event, do the Republicans get so “activist?” They tend to be sedate grousers.”

Hello? Not sure if you’ve noticed, John, but pretty much *all* of the “sketchy activity” at Health Care Town Halls has been done by Republican wingnuts. Carrying guns? Shouting down representatives without giving them a chance to speak? Spewing offensive and hateful epithets at people who disagree? Of course, you’ll come back with some lame exception to this, and again claim that it’s the rule (as you seem to love to do when it supports your point of view), but this “up is down” crap (Hitler as a left winger?) on the part of Republicans and other rightwing lunatics is getting way beyond cute.

Typical Democrat/liberal victim mentality….. “nothing to see here…..”

  17. thegreatspace says:

This does not surprise me and I feel for those that hold party affiliations so dear, that it’s their way of life. Both parties have committed shenanigans like this, is it any wonder that politicians can never be trusted. I am a centrist, and I think those that follow only party lines, rather than dealing with the problem, are lemmings.

  18. jccalhoun says:

Republicans would never do such a thing. They just cut themselves

  19. Breetai says:

    #16 Skeptic
Umm… about the town halls having had Republican activists with thier “sketchy” activity. Traditionally Democrats have always had fantastic turn outs because they bus in Union members and students performing “sketchy” activity.

    Just pointing out the obvious.

  20. Mr. Fusion says:

    #11, JCD,

Scott H. linked to a later article from the same publication that you had. In it is this paragraph.

Republicans later rejoiced when it was revealed Schwenkler had worked for a Democratic candidate in 2008 and alleged the vandalism was an attempt to frame conservative opponents to Obama’s proposal. Now it appears possible that Schwenkler ascribes to neither political ideology.

Bash Back is a group of radical gay, lesbian and transgender individuals who began organizing in 2007 to protest the Republican and Democratic national conventions last year, according to its website.

A new word for you JC,

    “Prostitute”
    v. to offer (oneself or one’s talent) for unworthy purposes

The customer doesn’t own a prostitute.

And this doesn’t get him off the hook.

  21. Rich says:

Rush just reported this guy is transgender. Now I don’t feel so gay thinking she had lovely eyes.

  22. So let’s take this to the illogical extreme:

So what you’re implying then is that all those churches burned down in the south weren’t racist hate crimes?

Yawn. How about talking about something intellectually stimulating for once.

  23. orangetiki says:

It’s PAT! I remember that SNL Sketch.

but in reality, unfortunately there are jerks and idiots on both sides of the table of life. Just try not to sit next to one.

  24. Improbus says:

You don’t need to make Republicans look bad. They can do that themselves. Wasted effort.

  25. Skeptic says:

    #20 Breetai

Not disputing what you say, although I think it probably occurs much less often than you might like to believe. Nonetheless, it misses the point.

John specifically said that he had seen “sketchy activity” at the recent Town Halls. There hasn’t been any busing in of Democratic activists, rather there have been several documented cases where many of the wingnuts disrupting the meetings were “bused in” by rightwing interest groups, or groups funded by health insurance industry organizations.

We can talk all day about who buses in more “activists,” but the fact is that Health Care Town Hall meetings are, by and large, being disrupted by rightwing wackos, not loony lefties as John implies.

As I pointed out, John’s intellectually dishonest assertion is not much different that much of the other “up is down, right is wrong” newspeak currently spewing forth from rightwing operatives of all stripes, and it is decidedly unhelpful when trying to carry on a legitimate political discussion.

Then again, maybe that’s not what John is trying to do.

  26. The more things change says:

? Isn’t this story totally made up? I thought the story I read yesterday was that this is a transgendered person mad at the DEMOCRATS for their lack of GLBT progress and that’s what the attack was about. Had nothing to do with Republicans or trying to make them look bad (unlike the fake ‘Obama’ attack on the pretty blond girl).

So was the previous story wrong or this one? One of them is made up.

  28. Scott H says:

#11 John, both sides of that story smelled from the start. I only find fault with your rush to characterize. You mastery of link-bait, I applaud.

Schwenkler was paid by a Democratic campaign to canvas. That is rent, a tofu dog, and a little weed for your average “anarchist,” I would imagine. In short, day labor.

If you can find Schwenkler on the payroll of a political consultancy or astroturf group, I will amend my opinion. I doubt if Schwenkler is anything much at all, other than someone looking for cover or cause to smash a few windows. That isn’t even proper anarchy.

Thanx for cleaning up my link. And HA to you, too.

  29. Named says:

    27 the more things change…

She wasn’t blond, and she wasn’t pretty. I linked her above…

  30. Mr. Fusion says:

    #30, Named,

She wasn’t blond, and she wasn’t pretty.

Ya, but Alphie would have done her in a heartbeat. Of course stamina isn’t his forte’.

Hell, Alphie wouldn’t have needed to throw a flag over her and do it for his country, because Jesus didn’t have a country.
