“Pretty nice, eh,” Obama said Sunday as the family took in the breathtaking view from the Grand Canyon’s Hopi Point under a magnificent blue sky and overlooking a 5,000-foot drop to the Colorado River. “Last time I was here was when I was 11 years old.” Asked by a ranger if it looked the same, he said, “It does!”
With the wonders of his country at his disposal, Obama did things that might seem a little out of his comfort zone. It’s safe to say that this Hawaiian-born president has spent more time on beaches and in cities than he has in the mountains of the West.
Update:I heard your comments, I’ll try to back up on these types of stories, I just think it is quite amusing that these politicians aren’t working.
I know Bush was on vacation all the time, but that doesn’t mean that Obama sucks too.
Don’t know where you’re coming from here. You can’t really accuse Obama of being lazy. Frankly to me part of being an American, esp. president, is appreciating our great outdoors.
#1, what about working as the President? Maybe repeal some laws, make decisions, stuff like that…
Agreed. Even FDR got around to doing vacations, and TR created the parks while he was killing bears and moose. With all the communication technology around, why would you want to ensconce yourself in DC during the summer months? I say more power to him.
“USA is going down”? When did we become a nation of such self-loathing jerks? Oh right – that’s just the fools making up sound bites and sensational news banners. USA is still #1; we’re just fumbling a bit when much of the world is finally catching up. Chill out and enjoy the rest of the summer. Sheesh.
Why is relaxing on SUNDAY characterized as a “vacation” and can anyone outside of a mental institution had more time off than Bushie?—or would anyone outside a mental institution compare anyone but himself to Bushie?
Yep==days in a row being criticized for taking on too much, one day of rest on FREAKING SUNDAY, and a comparison to Bush is made?
Standards? Facts? — No?
Presidents don’t repeal laws.
He decided to take a day off.
Silly.
When Bush was on vacation that was a good thing. The less time he was President meant that Lord Cheney was left to run things.
#3, US is not number 1, at least not in earnings per person or employment percentage.
The reason DC’s located on the Potomac is because the area’s a malarial swamp. Jefferson figured the climate was so harsh Congress would have to recess from May to September, giving the people a four month reprieve. Unfortunately, Jefferson didn’t foresee air conditioning, which now makes DC marginally habitable for most of the summer. However, no sane person wants to be here in August, ever. The temperature doesn’t even drop below 65 at night.
Blaming Presidents for getting out of Washington during August is stupid — it was stupid when people said it about Bush, and it’s stupid when they say it about Obama.
Guilherme==the USA is not No 1?==SACRILEGE. If you ever provide links to back your statements up, it will be fun.
Haven’t reviewed income for a while. You are right about that.

I find every (valid) criticism to be an exhortation to do better. Others disagree. Keep the good stuff coming.
#8,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)_per_capita
US is 15th.
Does Barry ‘O realize that a lot of people in his country do not have jobs? Do not have money coming into their homes.
I’m certain that the people who don’t have jobs know that Barry has once again taken the family sight seeing. At least this time they didn’t leave the county.
Who cares? I am on vacation, too. Who cares?
Sounds like someone is picking the low-hanging fruit (non-stories). If he didn’t take his family around he would be accused of being anti-family.
And you are only as out-of-the-loop as you want to be. I didn’t vote for Obama but I expect he is still more in touch with government on his days off than his predecessor was sitting in the Oval office.
#2 – Guilherme Cherman – what about working as the President?
The blood pressure of the average Republican is a good indicator of the level of work Obama has been doing. Just look at the Republican nutters here at dvorak.org/blog… they’re all red like lobsters.
#4 – bobbo – can anyone outside of a mental institution had more time off than Bushie?
#5 – chuck – When Bush was on vacation that was a good thing. The less time he was President meant that Lord Cheney was left to run things.
😀
#6 – Guilherme Cherman – US is not number 1, at least not in earnings per person or employment percentage.
Very true. But it’s still a rich country… the wealth is just not evenly distributed… but then again… you’ve got the same distribution problems in all countries.
#9 – Guilherme Cherman
The List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita is more representative.
I have no idea who (or what) Guilherme Cherman is, but his/its posts border on brain-dead ridiculous and the sooner John Dvorak revisits the decision to give this person/thing posting privileges the better.
News for Guilherme: Obama is on a swing through Western states. This wasn’t a “vacation” and unless you’re brain dead (or maybe just a really bad Turing test), you know it.
I’m no Obama supporter. From my perspective Obama is a corporatist sell out and qualifies as no more than Republican-lite. Didn’t vote for him and don’t much care for his continuation of Bush era policies on everything from massive giveaways to Wall Street banksters to state secrets to the protection of torturers and their enablers. But I do prefer that criticism of Obama be based in reality and not in the sheer lunacy of…well…people like Guilherme Cherman.
who is the new retard?
“I know Bush was on vacation all the time, but that doesn’t mean that Obama sucks too.”
I’m not exactly a fan of Obama’s policies but come on. This story is so ridiculous that I feel compelled to defend him. Surely there are better stories to critique our leaders with?
Do you actually believe that the President ever goes on vacation? Sure, he may be out of the Oval Office but don’t fool yourself; he’s on duty 24/7 taking the nation’s work with him.
If I actually thought he was leaving work back at the Oval Office, I’d want him on vacation all of the time! 🙂
“Hawaiian-born president”? Maybe not.
#6 OK now you are foff your rocker.
The USA is #1 is just about everything great. And that’s a fact.
These colors never run baby!
Hey guys, I think he should be working on rebuilding the health care bill, not on a tour with family.
Obama has worked really hard his first 200 days… especially compared to Bush who was the laziest president in recent history.
So, I don’t begrudge him some family time.
Still, I wish he was spending more time trying to get some facts and common sense into the thick skulls of these dullards and dupes opposing meaningful healthcare reform.
I will gladly pay for him to stay on vacation if he promises not to do anything else for the rest of his term in office.
Everyone would benefit if he was paid to go on vacation the rest of his term in office.
Obama should get out, and I’m not being snide.
The LAST thing Obama wants to do is project a bunker mentality. What about when Carter holed himself up in the White House during the Iran Hostage Crisis? It didn’t help.
So Obama should get out. Take a break. Give the impression that all will be fine.
Why is it that every time there is a story about Obama that is negative people have to say Bush did this or that?
They are both idiots Only thing Bush had going for him is he could screw up without a teleprompter.
So, the fact that he goes on vacation is a big story.
not!
You just want people to think he is going on vacation.
why?
Well, he’d have to be real to go on vacation. Right?
Wrong!
No more than Max Headroom.
That’s why there was no birth certificate!
A computer-generated graphic can’t have a birth certificate!
This guy only exists on video.
Just like Bin Laden!
Underneath it all its the same dude who played Jar-Jar Binks.
But now they call him czar-czar.
Obama’s gotten the economy into a recovering mode before going on break. Job report’s looking better, housing report’s looking better, market on a path back north of 10,000, economists predicting the recession is almost over. All in less than a year, yet to hear Dvorak and similar pundits talk you’d think his administration was already a worse failure than Bush’s. Gotta love it.
Guilherme Cherman? Who is this guy?
The President is there to draw attention away from the real power. So I do not care where he pretends to run the country.
#26 Guilherme Cherman brings up interesting stories. I have no idea who he is. Might be a Non de Plume but then again almost all of the editors write under one. I have it on good authority that John C. Dvorak is actually T. Herman Zweibel from The Onion newspaper.
See for yourself!
http://www.theonion.com/content/columnists/view/zweibel
Meanwhile, the US is in trillions in debt, 17% real unemployment, the dollar is going down, and Guilherme Cherman is wasting time posting on a blog!
Guilherme Cherman
1) Everyone is entitled to a vacation. In case you didn’t notice, he took his family on a sight seeing trip. Every father can understand that.
2) While normally I don’t follow the obvious inane posts, I notice this has gotten a few replies.
3) What the eff is it with “shoot the messinger” bullcrap against Guilherme Cherman. The simple response should be a simple “iffen ya dun like it, dun red it”.
