The results are in a sane ranking, unlike bing. I likey.
Just spent time trying Ixquick out and it seems a viable search alternative. Thanks for the heads up, Mr. D.
‘Great!’ me thinks ‘Finally a replacement/competitor to Google that looks promising.’ But… looking at their blurb they say they are metasearch engine. Am I right in thinking that, if they become too popular, evildoers at Google and Bing can block queries from their servers or start feeding them duff results?
They changed their name to startpage. They also have an https service.
They’re in the process of rebranding as “startpage.com”, by the way. It’s been my default search for a while now and I’ve been quite happy.
Ah, you beat me to it, blahblah. Well now I just sound stupid.
It says on the web page that ixquick doesn’t track IP numbers, but then it produces local advertisers.
Here are their regular and SSL versions of the Firefox plugins.

No IP is stored.
It looks interesting and I’ve added it to Firefox to try for a while. One complaint is that a bit more of a blurb could be attached to each result. Also, it seems to be scanning other search results. Okay. It says it’s a metasearch. But I don’t see any results (in the five rather random searches I performed) that list Google among the results. Since Goog has, by far, the best catalog of the web, this could be a problem. I don’t really search for much I feel a need to keep secret (except for nude pix of John) but it’s nice to have an alternative. Thanks for the tip.

I won’t use ixquick/startpage because it removes the query from the address line (GET method). I love the query on the address line because it lets me create shortcuts on Firefox so I can type my query right into the address bar, no matter what page is on at any given time. For example, I type “gg query”, hit Enter and go to http://google.com/search?safe=off&q=query
Bliss!
I have been listening to the Startpage.com ads on the radio for some time now. If JCD approves then I believe. I am just glad this isn’t another ijango MLM scheme.
Thank you for this. I heard an ad on the radio last week, but could not remember the name of it. Looks good to me, and if I can isolate myself from the Fascist State one tiny bit, I am all for it.
John, Of course if it becomes popular enough…it will be compromised by NSA. Sheesh.
I’m a fan of spezify. It may not be the most useful or the best actual search but at least it has a unique way of presenting the information which seems like a nice way to stumble upon things. Here’s its results for john c dvorak for example http://spezify.com/#/john%20c%20dvorak
All Google would have to do is offer an “opt out” or “opt in” option about their URL tracking and recording. And they’ll be back in everyone’s good graces. Plus there’s no guarantee that Startpage won’t start recording URLs in the future. The Homeland Security might soon require this, whether Startpage wants to or not.
That search query encrypytion feature looks nice. Because if your ISP is recording all your URL requests (and probably does). Then what does it matter whether your search engine does or not? You’ve been rated out from the start.
I want to know what they paid for Startpage.com
A while back I heard an interview with the CEO of Ixquick/Startpage (Katherine Albrecht show) and he seemed very dedicated to user privacy.
http://www.katherinealbrecht.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2962:mon-november-24-2008&catid=20:show-archives&Itemid=44
Really like it! Added as default search on firefox, and trying to find some program to change the default search engine in Safari.

That’s a pretty cool way of presenting the results! Thanks.
This lady Katherine Albrecht at http://www.spychips.com talks about this search website being good, along with RFID and privacy issue stuff.
You’re worried about this, look into what she found out about the upcoming census and the kind of kooky information they are going to be forcing us to give them, but anyway, privacy, that doesn’t really exist anymore does it?
Hey, isn’t this an Adam Curry kinda thing???
Curry actually says this is worse than google, since he considers to Amsterdam to be a bigger police state than the US.
Searched the term “start page” and here’s what I got, the first 3 were ads, not even related to startpage.com and the first non-ad was for start-page.com.
Thanks to startpage.com I will now be going to start-page.com as it even has a nice calendar and movie showtimes search box. If you want a good ROFL today look at the results for “start page” on startpage.com – it doesn’t even pull up startpage.com!
Here are the results:

You know, right now I can’t stop laughing about this stupidity and all the idiots that fall for it. These kinds of claims of being better than the best goes on constantly with internet “improvements” and every time it’s junk, junk, and more junk. At least when I watch TV infomercials and see things like Sham-Wow! they really do what they claim.
Search Ixquick. I read that startpage is Ixquick depending on whether you are in Britain or not. And it’s definitely not junk. It’s a multiple search engine that yields more than Google in number of results securely. I read somewhere it might even be with 100% SSL but you will have to confirm that with Ixquick. They dump your information in 48 hours.
@#16 “All Google would have to do is offer an “opt out” or “opt in” option about their URL tracking and recording” Only theoretically. Google have based their business model and methodology on tracking. It is like comparing hovercraft and the bus and saying that bus can do the same thing just if they take wheels off… Not impossible, but it involves more than just taking wheels off…
I just started using this after seeing this post. The results are good. I was unable to find a way to search by date though or to easily switch between their equivalent of advanced search and regular search without losing my search terms. Still, overall I like it and will use it first on principle unless I need the more advanced features of google’s advanced search or google scholar search.
I’m not a big fan of this site. Here is a test: Type in John C. Dvorak and see what pictures show up in the Pictures search (hint: he’s not even in the first row0. Now compare this to Google’s search which yields far many more results. Try it with video and the first four hits are the exact same video. Google, again, does a much better job.
Thanks. I’ve switched 🙂

Of course, no one is going to see this comment now, because many other newer articles have been posted. I posted this comment yesterday, but the moderation on this site doesn’t work. Other “moderated” comments I have posted have disappeared. They should change the wording to “If your comment doesn’t show up immediately, SUBMIT IT AGAIN.”
Thanks, Mr. D. I have been waiting for a good alternative to Google that doesn’t track your every move.
Did you find this through Googling? I am surprised it showed up.
Holy Crap solid results nice clean results page, & it’s fast. It’s just like Google… only not being evil.
Thanks for reminding me about this John. This has potential for sure.
