That’s the noise it makes? “Bing?”

Microsoft and Yahoo have reached an agreement on a 10-year search deal. The agreement will allow both companies to focus on their core strengths: Microsoft’s Bing will become the default search engine on Yahoo.com, and Yahoo will eventually take over the ad inventory on all Bing search results, eliminating complexity for advertisers (and internal overhead).

The Department of Justice still needs to sign off on the deal, but executives of Microsoft and Yahoo are reportedly confident that will ultimately happen. The agreement will probably take months to finalize, but since Google currently claims 65 percent of U.S. searches, and Yahoo and Microsoft 19.6 and 8.4 percent, respectively, the sooner they can start to catch up, the better.

From Microsoft’s press release, some of the key terms of the agreement:

The term of the agreement is 10 years; Microsoft will acquire an exclusive 10 year license to Yahoo!’s core search technologies, and Microsoft will have the ability to integrate Yahoo! search technologies into its existing web search platforms;

Microsoft’s Bing will be the exclusive algorithmic search and paid search platform for Yahoo! sites. Yahoo! will continue to use its technology and data in other areas of its business such as enhancing display advertising technology.

Yahoo! will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers. Self-serve advertising for both companies will be fulfilled by Microsoft’s AdCenter platform, and prices for all search ads will continue to be set by AdCenter’s automated auction process.

    Bingoo!

  2. strodick says:

Anyone think this is the first step toward a more integrated merge of the entire company?

  3. billabong says:

The reason Google kills on search and ads is that they have spent billions on server farms that crawl the web and dig up new and interesting results.Google good M$ and Yahoo lame.

  4. bill says:

It’s obvious the Yahoo folks are redundant…

    Bye Bye..

  5. MikeN says:

Why should the Justice Department have to sign off on this? It should be the other way around. The deal is assumed to go forward unless the Justice Department makes a case for rejecting it. The way they do it now allows for extortion.

  6. MikeR says:

Call it ‘Der Bingle’ and replace the annoying Yahoo Yodel with ol’ Bing crooning some song.

  7. SB says:

I like “My Yahoo”, not so sure about Bing running the search functions.

Question I have is, their commercials say they want to get rid of search overload. Does this mean that over time people will see more and more of what Microsoft wants you to see on the internet.

Seems like a slippery slope leading to huge internet filters.

Looks like a switch to google for search is in order. Lets see… Tools… Manage Add ons… Search… Google… Set as default. Done, goodbye Yahoo, it was nice while it lasted.

  8. qb says:

    Microsoft won, Yahoo lost.

  9. amodedoma says:

R.I.P. Yahoo. We had a lot of fun together. You were always my first choice of categorical search engines.

  10. jasmoran66 says:

MS search is shite, no matter how you wrap it. Ex-Yahoo search users will end up switching to Google. Nice try, though.

  11. ridin the short bus says:

MS has been hiring a few Google Boys so lets see what happens, but in the end, My true feeling and worry is, I hope Microsft Does not Take Yahoo Down with it!!!! I prefer Yahoo mail services to Google, but I use Google for search, and more than likely will continue to use Google, because “Bing Sucks” like everything MS has come up with since 2005.
I hope the Boys at Yahoo get rich(er), befor the big green moster MS kills / eats them.
    🙁
