A South Florida town manager who married a porn star last year was fired at an emergency meeting after the mayor and council members learned about it.
Fort Myers Beach town council voted 5-0 to fire Scott Janke “without cause” after Mayor Larry Kiker called the Tuesday night meeting.
Kiker told the News-Press of Fort Myers he learned that afternoon that Janke’s wife is an adult film star, and the elected officials took the action a few hours later.
“We did everything we could not to judge,” Kiker told the paper. “It’s not about him and her. It’s about the town…”
Kiker acknowledged that Janke had violated no rules or laws and added that he had done a good job for the island town….
Councilman Tom Babcock, responding to residents’ questions, said at a council meeting Wednesday that Janke was fired because his wife’s profession brought an inaccurate image to Fort Myers Beach, according to the News-Press.
Just what we need, government based on what-will-the-neighbors-think.

Absent an illegal reason, I think City Managers are and should be serving at the pleasure of the city counsel. Getting fired for marrying a porn star is not an illegal reason–ie, not a protected class of person.

bobbo, if he serves at the pleasure of the city council maybe he can arrange some more pleasure for them and keep his job.
Olo===you constantly raise good points. We should take a poll: was the action of the City Counsel motivated by concern for the image of the community or pure jealousy? I’ll wager further the manager knew he would get fired and made the right choice.
He most likely will sue (love is blind) and lose as he should.

Welcome to America and the wonderful word of “At Will Employment” where you may be fired just because the boss doesn’t like your wife. And there ain’t a damned thing he can do about it.
Stories like this are just the beginning – there are people out there who want to tell you who you can and can’t marry – and then put legal clout behind their moral values.
Unfortunately, I think #16 is correct – the city council was just jealous that they aren’t married to a porn star.
Fort Myers is a sleepy town in west florida and a likely Christian Taliban stronghold. It is not surprising, really. Certain parts of Florida are much like the mountains of Pakistan.
