BBC | Police helicopter sent to ‘rave’ — Is this what all the surveillance amounts to? Dumb incidents like this?

Action to prevent an “illegal rave” in Devon last week has been defended by police, despite claims the event was merely an organised birthday barbecue. Locals feared a rave was to take place at Sowton, near Exeter, on Saturday and called the police, who closed the event down. A force helicopter was deployed.

Andrew Poole, who was celebrating his 30th birthday, claimed police riot vans turned up before any music was played. But police said it had been advertised on the internet as an all-night party. Mr Poole, a coach driver from Sowton, said 15 family and friends had come to the event, where they were watched by a police helicopter for about 15 minutes. What effectively the police did was come in and stop 15 people eating burgers

He said before they had turned on the music, four police cars and a riot van arrived and demanded the barbecue was shut down and everyone leave.

The event was closed down under section 63 of the Criminal justice and Public Order Act 1994.

  1. Expect this level of surveillance in the Obamanation, and more.

  2. Postman says:

    #1,

Man I wish. Where I live we have an active child serial killer and the police seem totally bamboozled. Just wildly out of their league.

  3. Improbus says:

    @Postman

You expect the police to solve crimes? The only thing saving the public is that most criminals are even more stupid and lazier than the police.

  4. Hugh Ripper says:

Begs the question, what is a ‘legal rave’. I love the official excuse of “there would have been considerable disruption to neighbouring properties.” Oh the humanity.

  5. AdmFubar says:

looks like the system was gamed again… just like the speed cameras have been in the uk.. fake plates on similal cars, now it look like false reports about parties..

gee i wonder when one of the events the queen will attend will be raided.. =))

  6. Chris Mac says:

John, If you really want to pull the trigger on this. Shouldn’t you bide your time and get in bed with them first?

  7. Tavon says:

They should have known we are not allowed in groups of more than one in the UK.

The police have more helicopters than the Army.

What is the address of this website saying it’s an “all-night party”? doesn’t exist doesn’t Devon police.

I’m surprised the terrorist alert wasn’t raised.

  8. AkiKazeta says:

It looks like the Devon police have themselves a Minority Report Precrime unit. Thank God they’re protecting us from crimes that haven’t happened yet. =P

  9. KMFIX says:

I bet it was vegans who called the cops.

  10. Mikey Twit says:

    Postman

Please explain how you know there is an “active serial child killer” where you live, and if he/she is “active”, why can the police arrest this person.

Basically, I calling you out on such a ludicrous claim.

  11. Thinker says:

Wow, that was close. Thanks for saving the world from Bar-b-Que…you have no idea!

  12. Universal Turing Machine says:

wow a bit late jcd i was wondering how long till it would turn up here.

    anyway back to story.

nothing more than expected really the local community support officer (glorified trash men) here harasses kids on facebook despite there being very little crime here (maybe a few smashed windows) and suddenly its the crime of the century. I guess that’s why eroupe think we treat our young so wrongly.mind you that’s what we get for employing power hungry bullies as law enforcement officers.

like i have said before same on the united kingdom and yes adolf would be proud. also shame on the public of uk for letting crap like this happen.

  13. Lord Hemingway says:

They must have been drinking the wrong wine. Anybody who’s anybody would close down a party for that reason.

  14. RTaylor says:

This is Devon. It’s in the criminal wasteland of Southwest England. You have to deploy armed forces to break up these criminal gathering. If it had been Plymouth an air strike might have been necessary. Did I mention I love Cornish cream teas? I hope the chaps scones didn’t get cold.

  15. deowll says:

To many cops with not enough to do. Fire a few.

  17. Yep says:

I’m reading these stories from the top down, but obviously this is more evidence that cops are dangerously stupid.

  18. Curious says:

So how is it the first comment on DU seems always to be from some Obama-hating troll? Don’t you people have jobs? Or do you blame that on the 6-month old administration too?

  19. Animby says:
