I can’t wait to hear Adam Curry’s reaction to this one.

An unexpected characteristic has emerged among many swine flu victims who become severely ill: They are fat.

Doctors tracking the pandemic say they see a pattern in hospital reports from Glasgow to Melbourne and from Santiago to New York. People infected with the bug who have a body mass index greater than 40, deemed morbidly obese, suffer respiratory complications that are harder to treat and can be fatal.

With the new virus on a collision course with the obesity epidemic, the World Health Organization says it’s gathering statistics to confirm and understand this development. Drugmaker Roche Holding AG is combing through studies to determine whether heavier people should get bigger doses of its Tamiflu antiviral.

“Morbid obesity is one of the most common findings turning up in severely ill patients,” said Nikki Shindo, who is leading the investigation of swine flu patients at the WHO in Geneva. “It’s a huge problem.”

It couldn’t be that fat people are more prone to health and associated problems, could it, rather than swine flu itself? Or am I not taking swine flu seriously enough?

Scientists don’t yet know whether extremely overweight people get sicker because of associated conditions like heart disease and asthma, or whether the excess fat itself makes them more vulnerable. Both may be to blame.

Fat cells secrete chemicals that cause chronic, low-level inflammation that can hamper the body’s immune response and narrow the airways, says Tim Armstrong, a doctor working in the WHO’s chronic diseases department in Geneva.

Does it follow that bulimics deflect swine flu?

  2. So fat that you cannot hear the music

“People infected with the bug who have a body mass index greater than 40, deemed morbidly obese, suffer respiratory complications that are harder to treat and can be fatal.”

This isn’t isolated to the Mexican Flu. It’s standard across the board for all flu strains. Always has been.

  4. TooManyPuppies says:

Crap, forgot to add this to my previous comment:

“studies to determine whether heavier people should get bigger doses of its Tamiflu antiviral.”

A bullshit waste of money. The Mexican Flu has already shown Tamiflu resistance. It got a very short blurb on the news earlier this week, but got quickly blacklisted due to M. Jackson.

  5. AdmFubar says:

    soooooooooooo

you dies from swine flu if you are as fat as a pig? :@)

  6. How now pig says:

How come pigs aren’t getting people flu? Good question, my research indicates it’s because they are pigs and not people. Pigs get pig flu, humans get human flu. Flu strains are infinite. Now go study adjectives, that will cure you of these definition syndromes. What really worries me is catching WHO flu spread by the rapidly evolving strain of the medical study virus rampantly infecting databases everywhere.

    Natural selection at work.

  9. deowll says:

Pigs can get people flu. People can get pig flu and both can get bird flu.

Let’s be honest. Being fat and old is bad for your health. If you get sick for any reason you are more likely to die, duh.

Diabetic, heart disease, clogged arteries, none these things are going to help you survive a bout with the flu, any version or any other disease.

Thin people die from ebola instead of flu.

    It’s the GM Potatoes theory.

  12. Rick says:

I can’t believe the flu is allowed to discriminate like this. We should give it diversity training.

  13. Grey says:

If it’s most effective against obese people, and if it’s going to infect as many people as they suggest it will, Britain and the U.S. are in big trouble… but at least then they won’t have as high of an unemployment rate…

I hope Alphie gets his flu shot when it comes out.

  15. Larry says:

Sounds like a good reason to short Wal-mart stock

  16. Palooka says:

Short all IT companies especially Google. They provides free food so that their employees stay at the keyboard and are more productive. Therefore they get fatter. Overall just another step toward outlawing fat people. All of the morbid obese will have to have mandatory bariatric surgery to save their lives and future health care costs. Go long on bariatric surgery centers.

Sounds like a good reason to diet fatties 😛
