Creeps who swiped a Lady Liberty replica from outside Brooklyn coffee and book shop last month have posted a sick Web video showing them sawing off the statue’s blindfolded head.

The YouTube video, which the NYPD is investigating, ends with the slogan “Death to America” appearing on the screen.

It evokes the terrorist-produced videos of the decapitations of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl and American entrepreneur Nicholas Berg. The Fiberglas statue, which stands 8 feet tall and weighs 200 pounds, until June 21 stood outside the Vox Pop shop on Cortelyou Road in Ditmas Park.

As Liberty’s head is being sawed off in the video, the words, “We don’t want your freedom” are flashed on the screen.

  1. tcc3 says:

I don’t believe this is terrorism. They made a political statement, and no one got hurt. Pretty good compared to their ideological brethren.

I don’t agree with his stance, or theft, or destruction of property. But labeling everything “terrorism” dilutes an important issue.

  2. Greyhound says:

It is OK if they do not want our freedom.
They can have out jail instead.

  3. Furthermore says:

It hardly compares to the terrorism of the RIAA, which sues little girls and old ladies to “make an example” out of them.

  4. waltersobchack says:

The best tool for the job would have been a sawzall.

  5. Mustardtits the blind harp blower says:

Or a Portable Gas Concrete Cut-off Saw w/ 18″ carbide Blade.
So did they smash the head and then glue it back together to hold it up like Medusa? or was it Micheal Bay like editing? and whats with the after market “you tube” brand in the upper right? so many questions so little time.

  6. chuck says:

If they don’t want our freedom, they can have Gitmo.

I think what they mean is, “we don’t want you to have your freedom”. And, within in the next few years, they’ll have their wish.

    Gitmo nation here we come.

  7. jccalhoun says:

I would bet that this is just some guys and a joke that has gone bad. People steal garden gnomes all the time and I’ve seen things about people sending “ransom” videos for the gnomes and stuff. This situation sounds really similar to me.

  8. Benjamin says:

If this act wasn’t committed by Islamic terrorists, then it was committed by those sympathetic to Islamic terrorists. It is totally offensive to people that like freedom.

How would they feel if someone stole a statue of Mohammad and sawed it up with a Sawzall and posted it on YouTube and with a message that says, “We don’t want your Sharia law.”

Buy your own Statue of Liberty statue and do with it what you like, but if you don’t want our freedom move to Venezuela or Iran where they have no freedom.

  9. orangetiki says:

so am I now considered a terrorist if I watched that video?

Hey if You didn’t want our “Freedom” then you should not have bombed our towers. Just like the story I heard yesterday in fact of someone who was on the front lines. Once the enemy was captured after a firefight they were all saying “Friend” and giving the peace sign. Man you weren’t my friend 15 minutes ago when you were shooting at my soldiers.

  10. chuck says:

“It is totally offensive to people that like freedom.”

I don’t know about that. I like freedom. I like freedom of speech. So I don’t mind if someone wants to cut off the head of a statue to make a political statement.

I am offended by theft. So stealing the statue was wrong.

And I am offended by murder. So terrorists who cut off the heads of real people are wrong.

  11. Breetai says:

I was expecting a guy with a skimask to be reading some kind of statement.

  12. Cursor_ says:

    Theft is not excusable.

But cutting the head off of a replica statue of some green french woman is no different than burning a flag or sticking a crucifix in a jar of urine to me.

    Pointless really.

  13. Benjamin says:

#10 “I don’t know about that. I like freedom. I like freedom of speech. So I don’t mind if someone wants to cut off the head of a statue to make a political statement.”

Having the freedom to do something doesn’t make it any less offensive. I am offended by people wearing plaid with stripes, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t allowed to do so.

Stealing the statue was a crime and so was destroying it. However, it was a hate crime because it was motivated by hatred of our freedom. (Besides the owner of the statue might be gay.)

  14. Jason says:

Maybe they’ll like Iraq better. I’ll buy the plane tickets.

  15. Now for Something Completely Different says:

LOL…a “lawn ornament” from a coffee shop is decapitated on tape? Sounds like a bad YouTube prank. If they are terrorists, and just starting off with coffee shop decorations…what’s next…hair salon signs! Oh the humanity!

  16. McCullough says:

#14. But, But, didn’t we win freedom for Iraq?

  17. sargasso says:

My terrier commits much worse, un-natural and obscene acts of beastliness on my next door neighbor’s garden gnomes.

  18. Colin says:

I think the bigger question here is, where the hell did they get the idea that we have freedom?

  19. Troublemaker says:

    Maybe they were “Cloverfield” fans…

  20. PhillipG says:

were they using a tripod? if not they are not terrorists b/c we all know that is the real reveling sign (at least thats what DC and NY cops say lately 😉

  21. jccalhoun says:

terrorists are known fans of fonts and music that look like they came from a Super Nintendo game.

  22. Mustardtits the blind harp blower says:

Yea don’t worry we are destroying our freedom faster than any micky mouse outfit could ever dream about.

  23. chuck says:

#13 – with the exception of murder, I really don’t care motivates a person to commit a crime.

If you get beat up or robbed, does it make any worse (for you) if the guy hates you or not?

I make the exception for murder since by it’s definition, there must be some intention involved. But once the intent to commit the crime is proven, it doesn’t matter to the victim whether hate was involved.

  24. echeola says:

Burn a flag you are a terrorist! These guys are losers and thieves, not terrorists.

  25. Ron Larson says:

    #8 “…a statue of Mohammed…”

There are none. They are not allowed in Islam. Nor are any deceptions of Uncle Mo allowed.

The only artistic depiction of Uncle Mo that exists, that I am aware of, is a stone sculpture on the frieze in the main chambers of the US Supreme Court. He is holding a sword and the Koran. That has the panties of some Muslims in a twist. CAIR has demanded that it be removed. So far, the Supreme Court has refused.

  26. Hugh Ripper says:

    “..people who dont like freedom…”

Who the hell doesn’t like freedom? This sounds like crap from the mouth of Dubya.

This has all the hallmarks of a drunken college boy prank. Perhaps they have watched too much Simpsons and thought it was a statue of Jebediah Springfield.

  27. M0les says:

    “Chilling”… Seriously?!

C’mon, at worst this is a limp-wristed slap in the face of the USA. It’s pure trollbait. It’s more likely a domestic prank.

It reminds me of the cocky machao-man who got on Serb TV waving bits of wreckage when a stealth fighter was downed there years ago.

  28. whoreablee says:

    seems a strange video.

They even went to give it “nice lighting” and various post filter effects. The font and sound look as though they came from an 80’s game.

They are using a power saw, a saw and than a worn out baseball bat. At 46 second mark you can see the hands ungloved.

  29. deowll says:

    I go with # 2.

  30. Schleprock says:

Is there no one else who believes that this is the act of a right wing nut-job. All of the circumstances point to racist kids who want to show how “George Bush was right… See?Terrorists stole a statue and killed it.You should be scared!”
Hating freedom is bull. That is so much the right wing propaganda. The maker of that video bought a camcorder, a computer, power tools, a rope, editing software. He’s just stimulated the economy more than Rush Limbaugh placing an order on RX.com. Hate freedom……right.
