Well, after listening to the guy (I’m sure he’s nice and all, but I REALLY had trouble following him at times, I don’t believe he’s a paid announcer) they seem to be targeting embedded home media servers as an initial play.

Plus the site is for OEM developers, not home users anyway.

I am a bit amused at the argument that desktops are going away, I have no reason to drop my desktop anytime soon. However, I could see having room to room mini-servers that could handle short term push of media to local wireless systems.

So, for instance, you’d have one main media server in the basement, then two or three of these plug servers in various rooms to farm out the content to your tv, stereo, and bluetooth phones (for instance) without them having to have local storage. You could then move the servers if you needed, say to take one outside to play a movie on a portable viewer or cache and push out a book to an iphone.

It’s an interesting low-cost mesh server type concept, but getting all the industry folks to build appropriate software for it will be a bitch.

  2. Zybch says:

Just found out that Windows 7 is going to cost us poor australians between $50 and $150 more than people in the US have to pay (even taking into account the currency conversion).
I think its pretty unlikely that we have such a higher standard of living to be a legitimate target for such an outrageously increased price.

  3. Uncle Patso says:

$50 Windows? Yay! (Maybe I’ll finally upgrade from 98! *B^)

John asks if people should monitor their energy use. Yes! Get ready for when/if energy prices shoot up again.

  4. Lou says:

    Re I phone cost $179.
Apple most likley sells the phone to AT&T for 500. Then they sell it to the people for 200. Thats why they suck you into a 3 year contract.
    Thats how Blackberry does it.

  5. qb says:

Google did it therefore Microsoft must do it. Now there’s a sustainable strategy.

  6. brendal says:

Am sure it’s built w/slave labor just like Nike.

  7. Badcam says:

@Jim – Close, but no cigar.

You’re assuming that these devices have Wifi capability or that they will be able to communicate with your network via the power outlets. Hopefully, they will soon, but the current models don’t. I suppose you could always stretch your Ethernet cable out into the garden. You only need one others mothers connected to a NAS device, a USB hard drive, or even a simple SD Card, and then, any device connected to your network can stream media from it. Set it up as a torrent client, take it to work and plug it into your network somewhere and suck up all their Cap. Swap out the HD or SD cards when they’re full. Nice. These devices could well be game changers.
