Dean, a law student from Greenford, Middlesex, is suing the firm for disability discrimination after she was left “personally diminished [and] humiliated” while working in the American firm’s flagship London store last summer. “I had been bullied out of my job,” she said. “It was the lowest point I had ever been in my life…”
Dean, who was born without her left forearm, claims that when she told A&F about her disability after getting the job the firm agreed she could wear a white cardigan to cover the link between her prosthesis and her upper arm. But shortly after this, she was told she could not work on the shop floor unless she took off the cardigan as she was breaking the firm’s “look policy”. Her job was supposed to entail four roles – two on the shop floor and two in the stockroom.
A&F management “used the ‘look policy’ and the wearing of the cardigan as an excuse to hide me away in the stockroom”, Dean said today in her evidence. “I knew then that I was being treated different and unfairly because of my disability,” she said, before breaking down in tears.
“Conformity” – is one of the most contemptible words in the English language.
I wouldn’t patronize a business that wouldn’t hire someone based on skin colour.
the problem is how would you know unless it wasn’t publicized? Most people don’t pay attention. When I point out that everyone on a television show is white most friends (most of whom are white) say they hadn’t noticed it or that it is just a coincidence.
I’m not in favor of a nanny state by any means but I’m also not relying on people to notice or act on things like biased hiring preferences.
I really don’t see what the problem is? She looks like the type of girl that if you ask her to lend a hand, she just might…
Make her wear a burka. Problem solved.
#30 That’s life. You still haven’t addressed the issues I brought up about gov control and the attendant responsibility that must follow.
If a gov is going to control internally how a business is run they have to be ready to take responsibility for said business…
They already control how they run. Restaurants have tons of internal controls. Every business has tons of requirements the government forces on them. I don’t see “don’t be a racist” as any more controlling than “keep your bathrooms clean.”
# 35 jccalhoun said, “They already control how they run.”
Correct, and it is wrong. What’s your point, other than to say that gov is already interfering where it shouldn’t?
Why does it surprise people that a company that prides itself on a customer base of D-Bags are D-Bags themselves?
That said, I think the key quote from this article has been, thusfar, overlooked.
“…when she told A&F about her disability after getting the job…”
So, after she lands the job, THEN she tells them, “Oh, by the way…”
Both sides, wrong.
So, she wants to dress differently to hide a disability. It’s hard for me to understand how this is discrimination on the part of A&F when she wants to be treated differently than the other employees.
They are crazy not to have her on the floor, selling. Just from a physical appearance viewpoint, this is exactly who I’d want to represent the A&F brand.
I am pretty sure this woman will be working elsewhere pretty quick and be extremely successful!
I suppose when your store caters for morons (I’d say ‘moran’, but here in Oz a ‘Moran’ is a member of a crime family), then its wise not to have staff that offend morons.
You people are missing the point. A&F has had a history of discriminating against anything that doesn’t fit the ideal white male & female; their catalogues filled with semi-nude, barely legal males are perfect for Republicans like Mark Foley.
Another example was the release of several racist tee shirts depicting chinese stereotypes.

Sure, the stores do employ non-white individuals, until the company’s upper management runs a check and then fires the non-white folk.

Quit making Americans look stupid.
This occurred in the UK. US law applies in the UK exactly how?
Europeans think Americans are idiots when someone says someone violated the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) in some other country.
They could have jacked up sales promoting this cute girl as half-mannequin/half-girl.
she’s hot
Abercrombie & Fitch’s loss.
Assuming she was a good employee, I don’t see why this should hve been such a big deal to them (A&F).
I do think that she needs to find a company with a better sense of values though.
At #8, What are you an idiot? What are these “obvious reasons”?
As long as she can do the job she was hired for what is the problem? don’t be so superficial.
# 45 Scooter said, “Assuming she was a good employee, I don’t see why this should hve been such a big deal to them (A&F).”
You don’t need to understand it. You don’t own or run the company…
A&F probably is private enterprise, not a charity org.
They did not ask her to leave because of her prosthetic limb, they simply moved her where they thought she fits better. The girl is at least pretentious with her litigation. One armed person can’t serve customers as good as normal 2-armed person, no matter how superb prosthetics they have.
She didn’t like it she should leave.
If she will ever succeed with her claim, I expect we will have soon post like this:
“Lobotomized Man With 30 IQ Suing Big Fat Corporation On Discriminatory Grounds For Not Hiring Him As CEO”
Quite opposite to what all the politically correct idiots say and try to brainwash society with, we all ARE NOT equal, and never have been.
