Bolivian TV channel PAT has been left looking a bit daft after broadcasting extraordinary images of the last moments of Air France flight 447, lost over the Atlantic on 1 June. According to the report, the snaps were retrieved from a recovered Casio Z750, which was subsequently traced via the serial number to its owner – “Paulo G. Muller, an actor from a well-known children’s theatre on the outskirts of Porto Alegre”.

In fact, the camera can be traced to ABC Studios and sharp-eyed readers will notice that the photographs feature well-known actress Evangeline Lilly, aka Kate Austen from TV series Lost.

PAT has fallen hook, line and sinker for a hoax email, and to add to its embarrassment, has failed to appreciate that while the flight 447 disaster occurred at night, the images represent the daytime fictional break-up of Oceanic Flight 815.

Even if they had this footage, shame on them for airing it. The fake images are here if you haven’t already seen the TV Program. Sheesh.

People still get their news from TV? I thought everyone gets the news from twitter now.

  2. RTaylor says:

This must be why Butch and Sundance went to Bolivia to rob banks.

  3. Buzz says:

    No cement.

  4. killer duck says:

So this story would be totally legal in the US, but if a blogger got paid for the same story, then the FTC would have a problem with them?

  5. bill says:

    I thought it was real!!!

  6. Mr. Fusion says:

What the eff is the TV series about? Is it a takeoff on River World?

  7. RTaylor says:

We shouldn’t make fun of Bolivia. Remember over 50% of the worlds lithium supply is there, as in lithium ion batteries.

  8. Aaron_W says:

This is just a part of having a 24 hour news cycle. Having accurate news isn’t important, at least not as much as having the scoop to drive people to see your advertising before another blog, twitter, etc, gets it out there first. Good journalism is pretty much dead.

#8 – RTaylor – We shouldn’t make fun of Bolivia. Remember over 50% of the worlds lithium supply is there, as in lithium ion batteries.

Also because 95% of Americans can’t locate Bolivia on a map.

No, River World is actually a good science fiction. To Your Scattered Bodies Go is even better.

#7 Tried to watch the 1st season of “Lost”. I thought after the first couple of episodes it was about plane crash survivors, but I gave up half way thru the season. If your 1st 10 minutes (out of 42) are needed to get the viewers caught up to the story so far, its a disaster. And I’m not talking about the plane crash, real or Hollywood.

And to reference a show I proudly never watched, the Bolivian network was punked.

  12. Gasbag says:

Come on. Your are on a plane that is going down and get the camera to take some shots? And that some camera survives the crash? If you believe this you would believe anything.
