Slashdot – June 20, 2009:

“The Wall Street Journal reports that Steve Jobs had a liver transplant two months ago (subscription required, alternative coverage is available based on the WSJ’s report). He is on track to return to work at the end of June. ‘William Hawkins, a doctor specializing in pancreatic and gastrointestinal surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., said that the type of slow-growing pancreatic tumor Mr. Jobs had will commonly metastasize in another organ during a patient’s lifetime, and that the organ is usually the liver. … Having the procedure done in Tennessee makes sense because its list of patients waiting for transplants is shorter than in many other states.’ There are no residency requirements for transplants.”

  1. Some Liver Lover says:

Awesome – I hope it has GPS and a compass.

  2. Patrick says:

Talk about under the wire! With Nat H.C. he’d still be waiting due to his age.

  3. madtruckman says:

yeah, lets make fun of a guy’s serious health problems. really, are the smart ass comments necessary about this??

  4. newrepublican says:

Sadly, the ideologically handicapped rarely display humanity.

Take care Steve-O. Looking forward to your unique style continuing to bring tech to the public. I’ll take tech heroes over hedge fund managers any day.

  5. Buzz says:

    Long liver the king.

  6. Zybch says:

#4 Tech hero? Steve NEVER did anything but be a good promoter and frontman for the work of others while imposing an illogical hatred of buttons on his serfs.
I wonder if he insisted that none of the equipment used in his transplant had any buttons.

So now that hes got a new liver thingy, and will be on anti-rejection/immune-suppressant drugs for the rest of his life, will his health be even more permanently on the edge than its been over the past couple of years?

  7. Patrick says:

How did such a health food guy destroy his liver?

  8. Some Liver Lover says:

#3 Yes – and I love Steve Jobs. All the best to the most influential person in my life.

  9. qb says:

This was probably a planned leak by Apple and Jobs.

  10. Nimby says:

#7 – Patrick – He had pancreatic cancer. This is a highly deadly type of cancer that spreads (metastasizes) to other organs. Most commonly the liver. I’m only surprised they didn’t catch it earlier, before he needed to have an entirely new liver.

    # 3 madtruckman said, “…are the smart ass comments necessary…?” Uhm. Yes, they are. So, the rich guy was able to go clear across the country to buy himself a new liver? I’d be willing to bet any Apple employee needing a new organ just waits in California until he dies or wins the transplant lottery.

#3 – Yes – “…I love Steve Jobs. All the best to the most influential person in my life.” You’ve lived in a cave most of your life, haven’t you?

  11. Sister Mary Hand Grenade of Quiet Reflection says:

Our church has a big fucking organ. I doubt it could ever be transplanted though.

  12. Patrick says:

    # 11 Nimby said, “#7 – Patrick – He had pancreatic cancer.”

Okay, I had theorized that last year on this blog.

  13. mahrain says:

iliver is a tasteless joke, cancer is never funny, John!

  14. Some Liver Lover says:

Nimby needs to have sex more often and release some of that stress.

  15. SN says:

    3. “are the smart ass comments necessary about this

    The original title was:

Steve Jobs upgrades to iLiver 2.0, awaiting multitasking and copy & paste in 3.0

So at least I toned it down a bit.

  16. chuck says:

Which mac fanboy was the lucky donor?

BTW, #15 – cancer is always hilarious.

  17. Patrick says:

The average wait time, in the U.S., for a liver is 1 year. How’d he get one so fast?

  18. Widgethead says:

I see Apple stock up 2-8% come Monday afternoon on this news.

  19. Patrick says:

    Oops!

Funny, I know Heidi. Never knew she used to date Steve…

  20. ruffy says:

So…he got a cut and paste while the iPhone didn’t? Steve Jobs, ahead of the curve as always!

  21. miaminica says:

Now watch all those Apple sheep look into getting a new liver. Jobs will make getting a liver transplant the new iPhone. Until Jobs gets another smaller, faster, cheaper liver.

  22. MikieV says:

I’m with Chuck. [#18] re: Cancer is always hilarious.

My Mother has had a hysterectomy and a lumpectomy. Her Father was killed by prostate cancer.

My Father was regularly having various skin cancers removed while I was growing-up, since he was very susceptible to them [for whatever reason].

I’m a cancer “survivor” – having had a melanoma removed from my face, two years ago.

    Death comes for us all.

    Live, Love, Laugh

Hhmmm, someone didn’t read the article.

    # 11 Nimby said, “#7 – Patrick – He had pancreatic cancer.”

Okay, I had theorized that last year on this blog.

Still can’t be bothered to read the effen article.

But whatever, I guess that superior intelligence showed itself in #3

Talk about under the wire! With Nat H.C. he’d still be waiting due to his age.

In short, he bought his liver when someone else, also very ill but with a better chance of survival, misses out. In my opinion, that makes for another compelling argument in favor of a national health care system.

The right wing nuts should find a better spokesperson to forward their cause.

  24. Mr. Fusion, says:

    #24, Mikie,

My father recently died of cancer. It took a long time and he was in much pain. I don’t recall any of it being funny.

My aunt also died of cancer. I still miss her 20 years later.

My Ma-in-law’s sister currently has cancer. Nope, not a pretty sight.

There are others, but your comment is very distasteful. Cancer is not funny. Either to the patient or the survivors.

  25. bill says:

Cancer is Hell! but it is NOT a death sentence! I know.

Steve, FIGHT like hell! Get the best doctoring you can find.

And ENJOY every moment if you can.

    And THANK YOU! for everything!

  26. brm says:

Yeah, he’s getting a liver even though he had pancreatic cancer? Seems like he’d be at the bottom of the list for something like.

I’m interested in his wait time vs. the average.

  27. Proud Alien says:

Some comments here are just unbelievable. I hope none of you, morons, or your loved ones have to ever go through a cancer fight yourself.

SJ didn’t have a classic PC. His is a garden variety one with different odds and outcomes. That may explain how he managed to get a transplant. Besides, he did it in TN where the waiting list and times are much shorter.

  28. Dewtheone says:

Leave it to the wealthy to jump the line and get what they want, in this case by going to Tennessee…kinda throws natural selection on its ear.

  29. Jägermeister says:

#28 – pedro – Give him a child while you still can.

    LMAO
