North Korea warns of attack FYI

The North’s anger was provoked by the South’s decision to join a US-led international security initiative, established after the September 11 attacks to stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

“Those who have provoked us will face unimaginable merciless punishment,” said the military statement on the official Korean Central News Agency, blaming Washington and for the latest turn of events.

The PSI, which now groups 95 nations, provides for the stopping of vessels to ensure they are not carrying weapons of mass destruction or the components to make them. The South announced it was joining on Tuesday.

“Any tiny hostile acts against our republic, including the stopping and searching of our peaceful vessels… will face an immediate and strong military strike in response,” the North Korean statement said.

It said its military would “no longer be bound” by the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean war — in which the United States fought on the side of the South — because Washington had drawn its “puppet” Seoul into the PSI.

With no binding ceasefire, it said, “the Korean peninsula will go back to a state of war.”

  1. Patrick says:

All this is B.S. Due to O’Mama’s Sunshine & lollipops diplomacy, NK didn’t continue it’s nuke pgm., didn’t continue to fire missiles and now LOVES the ROK.

  2. Angus says:

Technically, they’ve never signed a Peace Treaty, and have been in a cease fire since the 50s. So, they’re still at war.

  3. Improbus says:

This is in China’s back yard … maybe they should man up and fix the problem. Send the Chinese army on a little war “exercise”.

  4. Brian says:

Improbus…your comment is inexplicable. Insane dictators aside, don’t you think that it’s likely that the Communist nation would side with the Communist nation? I sure as heck don’t want to think about a war started by 1.3 BILLION screaming Chinese where they’re pitted against us.

  5. Patrick says:

    # 4 Brian said, “I sure as heck don’t want to think about a war started by 1.3 BILLION screaming Chinese where they’re pitted against us.”

Pitted against us? What, they are going to swim the Pacific?

  6. Chris says:

I hope we do go to war with North Korea – and wipe that bastard Kim Jong Ill off the face of the planet and free those poor people from a life of pure misery…

  7. Santa Maria says:

Call their bluff. See what they will do.

And time for the South to grow up and decide to enforce a final solution. They can’t just sit there forever and hope that the North will just go away. They won’t. The farther the South goes along economic prosperity; the more they will be held hostage to success and unwilling to do anything militarily about the North.

Much better to man up to the clowns now; force a war; mercilessly bomb the North into submission (forget collateral damage); take the losses in stride and then focus on economic prosperity.

  8. Toxic Asshead says:

In all seriousness, there is a part of me that would welcome a shooting nuke war compared to what’s been happening recently. It’s a damn sad thing.

  9. Mac Guy says:

Thanks, Clinton. You started this fuckup with your carrot and stick policies that only delayed the problem. When have these kinds of policies EVER worked with dictators?

Sometimes, the only solution to a problem like Kim Jong Il is, well, by bloodying his nose a bit.

    Send in Tyson.

  10. Patrick says:

    # 10 Mac Guy said, “When have these kinds of policies EVER worked with dictators?”

Didn’t it work with Germany when Neville used that tactic?

  11. Brian says:

    @Patrick:
    This should be obvious…
If China sided with North Korea and helped subdue South Korea, not only would the US get involved, but it spin off the UN into a frenzy, which would probably be the start of WWIII. I’m not sure that would be nuclear, but it would have a nuclear component. At the very least, the presence of an overtly oppressive nuclear power would start the global nuclear proliferation off on a whole new game (with dozens of players, no less). And that’s on top of the tragedy of the 60M or so in South Korea that would be killed or subjugated.

  12. Ubiquitous Talking Head says:

I suggest you Obamaphiles message he do something quick…this is nuclear war coming.

Nuclear war? You mean one where North Korea blows itself up? It apparently has a few low-tech nukes in the works but currently no way to deliver them, except possibly by dump truck, which would likely be stopped at customs.

I don’t know how much money China has invested in SOUTH Korea, but I bet it’s enough that they won’t let the North get too far past the posturing stage. It would be bad for business.

  13. Ron Larson says:

I wonder what in the hell is stopping China from going in and straightening NK out. The last thing China wants, or needs, or NK starting a war in their back yard.

I was reading an editorial in yesterday’s NYT about this. The article think that all of this is for internal consumption than external in order to establish transfer of power to Kim’s son. It is designed to invoke a state of emergency in NK so they rally around Kim and his heir.

  14. Ah_Yea says:

#8, exactly. Although the south shouldn’t actually go to war with the north. They won’t have to.

Just impose more sanctions. Search each and every boat coming and going, close the money supply, put the screws on. Call their bluff.

As for China, North Korea is an embarrassment. I have actually talked to some Chinese about North Korea (I have some very good friends there who will tell me openly). They first point out our boycott of Cuba, and then I point out their support of North Korea. We both agree these are relics of the Cold War Past and need to be resolved.

The Chinese won’t support North Korea. The Chinese are launching manned rockets into space and the North can barely launch a satellite into the ocean.
The Chinese have had the Atomic Bomb for decades, the North just a week ago. And a crude one at that.

What China needs is a way out of supporting the North without loosing face, and with the way the North is acting, the Chinese may just get what they want.

  15. RTaylor says:

North Korea is a poor starving nation, plagued by psychotic leaders. They don’t have the means to wage a sustained war in the south. If they threaten nukes, China will give them a good bang on the head. I honestly believe they watch CNN, and get pissed when they’re out the news cycle. China will take care of them, but not over sable rattling.

  16. Sea Lawyer says:

    lol, as RTaylor suggests…

Are the North Koreans even able to feed their entire army to support a long-term war with the south?

  17. Patrick says:

    # 13 Brian said, “This should be obvious…
If China sided with North Korea and helped subdue South Korea,”

LOL! The Chinese leaders aren’t as stupid as Obama or Bush. They wouldn’t ruin ROKs econ that buys its goods, nor piss of the US so as to close our markets to them.

  18. Ah_Yea says:

#19, you are certainly right about the “piss of the US” part. Not to mention Europe (who buy a whole lot of Chinese stuff).

#17, as I understand it, North Korea has become a welfare state of China. The only reason the Chinese ever supported the North in the first place was simply to put some space between the US in the South and their border. This is directly the responsibility of MacArthur, who threatened to wipe out the North and then invade China.
After all, it was MacArthur’s blustering and showmanship about invading China that got him fired!

  19. jpohland says:

Aislin’s editorial cartoon in the Montreal Gazette characterizes the situation perfectly:

  20. amodedoma says:

Oh gawd, not again! This guy always does the same thing. I think Saddam learned it from him. Every time north korea runs out of money they do this saber rattling act. Then they get the united nations to give them an ultimatum. Once they’re at the bargaining table it’s all concessions and help. I say screw them. If they don’t want to change let them rot. It’s time to call their bluff.
I got nothing against the north koreans. It’s that kim jung il guy, what an asshole.

  21. Patrick says:

Just leave them be and give them no aid. See how long they survive…

  22. jbenson2 says:

#23 said: just leave them be and give them no aid. See how long they survive…

The problem is that the aid is coming from China.

  23. Patrick says:

    # 24 jbenson2 said, “The problem is that the aid is coming from China.”

Not a problem. China only gives as much food as does the ROK. The rest comes from international (USA). China doesn’t give enough to keep them afloat.

  24. jim says:

China and Russia are not going to want the US sitting on their southern borders. “Wiping NK off the map” would be a reckless option. Hopefully this will burn it self out. The last thing we need is WWIII. Remember China and Russia are fully capable of wiping the US off the map. It works both ways guys.

  25. jccalhoun says:

NK is just a spoiled brat looking for attention. They do this every 6 months or so. waaa waaa waaa.

  26. BigBadTexan says:

Let Japan have it. I’m sure they are tired of the shit flying over their country anyway.

  27. GigG says:

One thing to remember. NK could pretty much level Seoul with non-nucler arty before SK, China or we could react.

  28. oscord says:

USA will just stand aside for a while (they probably will make a lot of noise in UN and all). To watch KIAs and Hyundais vanish from US market. Its just a part of “US war on imports” : )

  29. deowll says:

The government of the North is lead like a cult. You have a very small group into whose hands all power is concentrated. They spend all their time talking to each other. They are cut off and isolated. Their leader is liable to do anything.

If they throw a nuke at the south or try to invade their nation will be a shambles in less than 24 hours. We can us large gas bombs and carpet bombing along with precession strikes to take out the military and terminate the ability to move forces and goods around as well as taking out the communications net.

I do suggest we _don’t_ move our forces inside their border because that would piss off the Chinese. Our military is already vastly over extended and Walmart might need to find new sources of cheap labor.

  30. Mr. Fusion says:

    #30, oscord,

Not with 30,000 troops and a sizable air support wing in place.
