President Obama has nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit as his first appointment to the court.
If confirmed by the Democratic-controlled Senate, Judge Sotomayor, 54, would replace Justice David H. Souter to become the second woman on the court and only the third female justice in the history of the Supreme Court. She also would be the first Hispanic justice to serve on the Supreme Court.
Conservative groups reacted with sharp criticism on Tuesday morning. “Judge Sotomayor is a liberal judicial activist of the first order who thinks her own personal political agenda is more important than the law as written,” said Wendy E. Long, counsel to the Judicial Confirmation Network…
Judge Sotomayor has sat for the last 11 years on the federal appeals bench in Manhattan. As the top federal appeals court in the nation’s commercial center, the court is known in particular for its expertise in corporate and securities law. For six years before that, she was a federal district judge in New York…
Born in the Bronx on June 23, 1954, she was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 8. Her father, a factory worker, died a year later. Her mother, a nurse at a methadone clinic, raised her daughter and a younger son on a modest salary.
Judge Sotomayor graduated from Princeton University summa cum laude in 1976 and and attended Yale Law School, where she was an editor of the Yale Law Journal. She spent five years as a prosecutor with the Manhattan district attorney’s office before entering private practice.
But she longed to return to public service, she said, inspired by the “Perry Mason” series she watched as a child. In 1992, Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan recommended the politically centrist lawyer to President George H. W. Bush.
It’s not out of line that a traditional conservative Republican appointed her. Her life is a Horatio Alger story – the sort that inspired generations of Americans to aspire for a better life.
Previously approved by two bi-partisan efforts in Congress, no doubt the Party of “NO” will waste a couple of months on preaching their ideology, trying to stop her appointment to the bench.
You left out, “Of course”.
I’m sure the Republicans will give her the same courtesy and respect that the Democrats gave Cheif Justice Roberts in his confirmation hearing.
She’s been slapped down twice with unanimous SCotUS decisions. Not the brightest bulb judicially.
Who doesn’t the GOP hate now? They even hate themselves. It’s becoming a sad sideshow. Somebody best shut up the old guard and bring the party more to the center.
The Republican Party? Didn’t it die in Late 2008?
I think you can still find fundamentalist hate groups and some unhinged LIE-bertarians, but no party as party has been understood for over one hundred years.
That was a good one.
“Supreme Court nominee fulfills the American Dream. The Republican Party hates her.”
Two words: Sarah Palin.
Okay, two more words: Bobby Jindal.
#6 LotsaLuck,
You forgot Harriet Myers.
#3, Patrick,
Once again you accuse without offering any proof. You’re such an asshole.
Sotomayor is widely acclaimed as a good, intelligent Judge. Yes the right wing nuts will try to stymie her appointment. Simply because, like you, so many of them are assholes too.
just what we need, more justice that chucks
the rule of law to the wind in favour of a heart-felt, empathic decision.
is this not the same type of (dare i say, logic) that has infected the planet with the political correctness bomb?

bah..hit submit too fast. subtract the second use of “logic”

Yup….
Another Federal Judge who, should she decide that only gang members drive red SUV’s, will find a way to force the rest of us to get rid of ours….
It ain’t just the guns. It’s FREEDOM….
# 8 Ralph, the Bus Driver said, “Once again you accuse without offering…”
Go read through the SCotUS ruling since she’s been on the bench. If you are too lazy to keep track of what goes on with the Supreme Court you are choosing to be ignorant… Not my problem.
She’s inspired by Perry Mason.
Great.
It’s a lib replacing a lib so who gives a fuck? Doesn’t change the court at all.
Do Puerto Ricans need work visas? Visa waiver? How easy is it for them to enter the US?
I don’t no nuthin’ about the lady but I’ll be doing my research for the next couple of days. What’s curious to me is that several right wing pundits had predicted he would a) nominate a woman to enhance his standing with the distaff and b) to consolidate the Dem control of the Hispanic vote. A couple had gone so far as to predict he would try for the eagle. Now, if she turns out to be gay…
Who cares who gets in the Supreme Court. The federal budget will bankrupt the country soon enough.
#15…they’re already in the US.
Comment stolen from another blog:
She certainly talks slow. Is that because of empathy for Republicans?
Speaking as a so-called hateful conservative, I’ll have to research her before I make a decision about her. As long as her judicial philosophy is that she interprets laws in the context of the U.S. Constitution then her appointment shouldn’t be an issue.
What it comes down to is how a judge sees the role of the U.S. Constitution is where we may diverge. We’ll see…
ps…and omg talk about blinking, batty-eyed madness, did you see her when she was speaking from memory?
this woman is seriously in love with herself.
whenever she spoke of herself or accomplishments, her eyelids where fluttering like she was in a sand storm.
quite telling. -seems a lot of her judgments
support this language as well.
methinks she’s battled so hard to overcome the standard stigmas associated with her race and sex, that she forgot how to maintain her perspective and put her prejudices aside
when making judgments.
-body language rarely lies.

This is about the only point I’ll give Obama over Bush in that she’s got some experience of Harriet Myers.
But I’ve got to wonder how anyone can support promoting people with lower scores because they’re not white. I’m not racist. This is discrimation because someone’s not a minority.
“The Republican party hates her”
Is this before or after they knew her background?
Heh, and when Colin and Condie got appointed they were called house negro’s by the other side.
Big deal, reality is Obama = Bush the only difference between them is party affiliation and how they spin it to the the masses who gobble it up like the sheep they are.

How many times has the SCOTUS over turned her opinions? How many times have other judges ripped her decisions?
Is this really the most qualified judge Obama could find or is he just playing gender/identity politics?
This is great choice! Another nail in coffin. The sooner the better. Obama is doing our work for us. He is our good friend. It will not be long now. You soon be over. Pigs!
Santa Maria deserves a thwack to the head, you silly wabbit.
#12, Cow-Patty,
Go read through the SCotUS ruling since she’s been on the bench. If you are too lazy to keep track of what goes on with the Supreme Court you are choosing to be ignorant… Not my problem.
What? All 1800+ decisions? You are such an idiot.
Please point out the two decisions you say she was slapped down for. If you can’t, well …, I understand.
From the same people that bashed Janice Rogers Brown’s appointment.
A lot of conservatives are happy with her. They figure the justice will be a liberal either way, so better to have one who isn’t very smart.
Republicans aren’t entitled to give Obama any support given the way he is running things. He is shutting down successful Chrysler dealerships just because the owners are Republican donors.
