Think about this. Microsoft hasn’t referred to Windows by its version number for years. Not since Windows 3.x. Instead they came up with other names like “95”, “98”, “ME”, “XP”, and “Vista”. Which were really “5” for XP, and “6” for “Vista. But suddenly we’re given “7” and no other catchy names or letter designations. Why? It’s all about the “lucky” connotation of the number 7. So is Microsoft going to change the pane theme to a Las Vegas casino motif? Will a Slot Machine be the new Welcome screen, with the “7” appearing on all wheels. Is this Microsoft’s way of saying, “Yep, Windows 7 is a gamble. But you could get lucky and it will work.”? I don’t know, but it sure does look like Microsoft is gambling on its acceptance.
And that’s why they’re calling it “Windows 7”. Even though it’s two years after 2007 (that’s when Vista got released). They seem to be as agog over this, as Apple once was when they had their own version 7 of Mac’s OS. Maybe more so. So once again Microsoft has caught up to where Apple has been and gone. Horay
Speaking of Napster, et al, did you see this about RIAA getting all the Last.fm member names?
