My question as usual: Will upgrading from Vista to Win 7 be a horrible experience?

  3. Hugh Ripper says:

Microsoft have a great deal to lose if 7 is a dud. They really need to satisfy their enterprise customer base that 7 is the real deal or the enterprise will start looking elsewhere for desktop solutions.

John: Solve this problem for Intel ….

    Customer:
“Hi Intel sales guy, I want to buy 100 chips in total from you and from AMD”

    Intel:
“Sure, I’ll sell you 80chips for $70 each.”

    Customer:
“Cool, how much for 50 chips?”

    Intel:
“50 chips costs $75 each. You get a volume discount at 80 and over”

    Customer:
“OK, I’ll buy 80 chips then”

    Intel:
    “Great, see you later”

    AMD complains to EU:
“Intel limited AMD to 20% share of the business! Foul!!”

What happens when you have essentially two suppliers? Doesn’t the share of the business kinda stick out? This is a simple one. Imagine when performance, availability and other factors come into the equation. The issue is not quite as simple as it seems. It’s even worse when one supplier has a clear lead in products. What would have happened if Apple chose AMD instead of Intel 2 years ago? They would have been screwed.

The best thing MS did with the release of both Win7 RC 32/64 bit is I got to test compatibility with both old software and hardware. Surprise a program (11 year old) that did not install in Vista worked perfectly in Win7. I for one will upgrade to Win7 when released.
