OK, no joke about this. Rep. Paul Broun [R-GA] has introduced a resolution to encourage Obama to declare that 2010 is The Year Of The Bible. Now, excuse me if I’m wrong about this, but I thought 2010 was going to be the Year of the Tiger.

Is anyone else sick of living in the United States of Jesustan? And, um, why are these 14 Congresscritters wasting their time with silly stuff like this when we’ve occupied 2 foreign countries and our economy is in the tank? Is it because they think the only possible way out of the mess the Republicans created is to pray? I mean, that’s SLIGHTLY less obnoxious than being merely the “party of no” but it still doesn’t get us anywhere.

Cosponsors:
Rep. Lynn Westmoreland [R-GA]
Rep. John Carter [R-TX]
Rep. James Forbes [R-VA]
Rep. John Gingrey [R-GA]
Rep. Zach Wamp [R-TN]
Rep. Todd Akin [R-MO]
Rep. Thaddeus McCotter [R-MI]
Rep. Mike Pence [R-IN]
Rep. Louis Gohmert [R-TX]
Rep. Trent Franks [R-AZ]
Rep. Jim Jordan [R-OH]
Rep. Doug Lamborn [R-CO]
Rep. Kenny Marchant [R-TX]

The only decision now is which version to use? Let the debate begin!

Thanks to Mr. Justin

    @ 57

    I understand.

Don’t worry I’m not confusing the two – and understand the difference.

But conservatism is bandied around to mean something. Just saying there are more flavors doesn’t change the broad meaning of what ‘conservatism’ is. Also what they say there are is important. Because if they aren’t that, all the people who are that should be calling them out.

That has only started happening after they lost the election, which is weak. Moreover what is really pathetic, is saying now its blantently clear they are a bunch of megalomanic idiots even to their prior supporters, that now they are ‘classic liberals’. Right?

Or are you claiming that’s okay because there are different forms of conservatism?

    61,

You know, I’ve always wondered why Americans are so hot about their constitution. It seems that the only section they care about is the 2nd Amendment. And you guys never use that right to keep government in line. In fact, the only time the 2nd Amendment comes up is when its about an a) wacko militia group buying fertilizer or b) some home-owner shooting black people trying to break in.

It seems that you don’t deserve the best constitution in the world any longer…

  3. Lou says:

I guess the GOP forgot to pray for a win in the election last fall. Or God even had enough of their BS.

  4. Back to first century solutions for the 21st century. What a great idea! Have they heard of the first amendment? No. Second? Yes. Any others? Probably not.

  6. deowll says:

Who cares? If it makes Christians happy go for it. It is most likely the year of about six or seven hundred other things. Maybe the Greek and Roman Pantheons, Buddha, or Mohammad can be next.

  7. Troublemaker says:

Cool, now I can declare 2010 as the year of the knuckle dragging inbred moron.

  8. Faxon says:

    2. So what?
    3. STFU, all of you.

Be fun to see what kind of dummy the book is written for.

  10. #41 – brm,

Ben Franklin’s original design for the great seal had Moses splitting the Red Sea and the slogan, “Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God.”

I guess Ben didn’t get either of his turkeys instated.

  11. Hmeyers says:

The bible didn’t get Republicans into their majority they had for 10+ years and it certainly isn’t going to get it back for them.

Why pander to voters who will vote for you automatically?

    The idiots.

  12. careless fairy says:

Christians are so stupid. I’m glad everyone else here hates them too….it’s the only place I can escape the reminders that we live in a religious police state.

The only difference between America and Iran is that gays are beaten to death by ordinary citizens and not the police.

I hope to move to the Netherlands next year!

All this talk of left leaning RINO’s has reminded me that in Canada we’re trying to save the Rhino Party. Please contribute your returned beer bottle cash to this courageous and truly worth political party.

  14. MikeN says:

They have to do something to get votes. I mean Obama presents a budget where his first year’s deficit is equal to Bush’s first seven combined, and no one cares.

“But conservatism is bandied around to mean something. Just saying there are more flavors doesn’t change the broad meaning of what ‘conservatism’ is.”

Depending on the context, it does.

I think we’re seeing Republicans in particular, and conservatives in general, trying to get away from defining ‘conservative’ as ‘the religious right’ and back to identifying as ‘fiscal conservatives.’

This is such a good thing, I don’t really understand why Democrats and liberals are jumping all over it. There are a lot of Republicans trying to exorcise the religious right from the party, but Democrats seem to want to stifle this. For what reason? Dunno.

    >>Time will tell because it’s ALL Obama’s now
    >>or his teleprompter – it’s sometimes
    >>difficult to tell which is in charge

You just can’t give it up, can you ‘tempt?

Now that a guy’s in charge who doesn’t blather on like a retarded second-grader, you just can’t (or won’t) believe that an intelligent, honest, red-blooded nephew of our Uncle Sam could be hiding under that Jig-a-boo-skinned, Muslim-middle-named exterior.

Forget Dumbya. Dumbya was just a real bad, real long nightmare. It will take a while to clean up the bed from the where the whole nation shit itself, but the nightmare is over.

It’s over now, and reasonable, intelligent people are at the helm.

  19. brm says:

    #84:

“Now that a guy’s in charge who doesn’t blather on like a retarded second-grader”

Well, not unless he’s without teleprompter.

note: criticism of Obama’s speech does not imply I think Bush spoke well.

“and reasonable, intelligent people are at the helm.”

    Yeah, no.

  20. Kanga bill says:

Why not ‘Grimms Fairy Tales’ or some other book of fairy stories? They would be just as REAL!
The christian bible is nothing more than a a load of Bullshit, dreamt up by a load of CON-MEN! And that applies to all the rest of these religious tales as well.

  21. Named says:

Can you please define eminent domain? Thanks!

  22. #70 – bobbo,

Any way to post the answers to the questions posed on the book cover?

How do we know the bible can be trusted? It can’t.
How do I get the most out of my bible? Use each page as toilet paper. It may last a month.
Why are there so many translations? I think you mean mistranslations. And, the real issue is why so many religious books over the centuries, not just translations of this one. One true god would never allow this to happen.
How did we get our bible? The same way we got all other works of fiction, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Aesop’s Fables, and many others. They were made up, written down, and copied.

  23. #78 – Alfred1,

And I do believe conservatives are less likley to fall for such wedge politics…wrapping oneself in the flag, pro-life or Bible—doesn’t guarantee our vote…we are much wiser now…having seen what happened for 8 long years…

we were betrayed when Bush & co ran up absurd deficits rather than completing the contract with america…and shrinking Government…paying down the debt.

Interesting. Now if only you could recognize that this has been the case since Ronald Reagan with the entire repugnican party and that they have truly abandoned you long ago, perhaps you will see that today, it is actually the democraps who are more in line with your politics.

It is actually the democraps who at least tax and spend rather than borrow and bomb. Believe it or not, this is actually the more fiscally conservative stance.

I long for a zero party system where we can get rid of stupid party platforms and actually elect individual candidates. Until then, I will vote for the dramatically lesser evil.

  24. Traaxx says:

It’s funny that about every forth story is anti-christian on this site. Not anti-muslim, not anti-budist, not anti-enviromentalism.

The entire preoccupation here is against Christian beliefs. Tolerant beliefs that unlike Islam haven’t beheaded anyone, beliefs that unlike Islam doen’t insist on convert or die, but simply we’ll engage and promote our beliefs, much like the enviromentalist, Demoncrats, or any other group, but no it’s the Christians that we oppose, it’s the Christians that we can’t stand to listen to and want to ban from even talking out loud.

So exactly what did you not get for Christmas that made you rebel against God? What sin you commit and continue to delve into that leads you away from God in rebellion? So Christians want to make a month mean something to them, we have months for everything else in the dictionary, but because a Christian asks for something you are so intolerant and judgmental that you think you live in a country of Jesustan. And just in case you missed it the Demoncrats are the party of no – No Soft drinks, NO SUVs, No economy, No Budget savings, No Budget that is to much in debt, No Treaty that subverts the US is too much, No Treason that is too much. Yeah Demoncrats promote No just as much as Republicrats, but I’m a Nationalist not part of the Two party handcuffs that have reduced us to the place in history.

    Whatever…………

    #82, Ayatollah,

Conservatism in its purist form conserves the freedom loving principles upon which this nation was founded.

It conserves freedom…its right to existence in every area of our lives…

No doubt some states will then seceede…a few still believe in freedom…and there is where I’ll relocate…

I’m saving these posts. I plan on republishing them next fall during the run up to the mid-term elections. Then watch the Republicans lose even more seats.

    Keep ’em comin’ Ayatollah!!!

  26. qb says:

I always find it interesting how people (whether left or right) skew these arguments on principle. Way back when, Nixon and Buchanan figured out how to turn the country towards conservatism starting in the South. Basically it works like this, if you vote for us then your state will get more money. Look at the return on tax dollars, conservative states tend to get more these days. Of course, that will now change under the Democrats as they fund their base.

States won’t secede, they’re reliant on federal money. Alaska is just one example of many. Of course, when money doesn’t work, both sides use fear – but that can’t be sustained.

  27. Mr. Fusion says:

As more people see the sky doesn’t fall if they denounce the bible, the bible thumpers will continue to lose support. I strongly suspect a majority of church goers currently are ambivalent about “god” and the whole bible thing. Maybe not quite agnostic, but not true believers (or crazy) either.

Belief in “god” is becoming less a fact of life and more of an interference in life more and more every day. I look forward to the day when all religions are regarded as mere anachronisms.

The only reason the Republicans are pushing this is because they don’t have any real ideas. Nor do they have any real leaders that would say “No, don’t do it”.

  28. contempt says:

    #94 Mr Fusion
    >>I strongly suspect a majority of church goers currently are ambivalent about “god” and the whole bible thing.

I see you are still polishing that crystal ball of wishful thinking. Don’t you ever get tired of being wrong?

  29. Mr. Fusion says:

    Further to #94,

I believe this paradigm is the result of further advances in science and the teaching of science in schools.

The more we learn that medicine cures people much better than “god” does, the easier it is to accept that “god” doesn’t exist.

The more the Hubble telescope brings back images of the distant cosmos the more we realize the heavens are actually composed of dust and gases.

  30. Mr. Fusion says:

    #95, ‘temp,

I see you are still polishing that crystal ball of wishful thinking. Don’t you ever get tired of being wrong?

Actually I was wrong just last week. Here I said you were straight, but I was wrong.

If you look at what I wrote, I used the word “believe”. I didn’t say I “know”, simply because I haven’t surveyed what goes on in others minds. But the evidence suggests I could be correct.
