OK, no joke about this. Rep. Paul Broun [R-GA] has introduced a resolution to encourage Obama to declare that 2010 is The Year Of The Bible. Now, excuse me if I’m wrong about this, but I thought 2010 was going to be the Year of the Tiger.
Is anyone else sick of living in the United States of Jesustan? And, um, why are these 14 Congresscritters wasting their time with silly stuff like this when we’ve occupied 2 foreign countries and our economy is in the tank? Is it because they think the only possible way out of the mess the Republicans created is to pray? I mean, that’s SLIGHTLY less obnoxious than being merely the “party of no” but it still doesn’t get us anywhere.
Cosponsors:
Rep. Lynn Westmoreland [R-GA]
Rep. John Carter [R-TX]
Rep. James Forbes [R-VA]
Rep. John Gingrey [R-GA]
Rep. Zach Wamp [R-TN]

Rep. Louis Gohmert [R-TX]
Rep. Trent Franks [R-AZ]
Rep. Jim Jordan [R-OH]
Rep. Doug Lamborn [R-CO]
Rep. Kenny Marchant [R-TX]
The only decision now is which version to use? Let the debate begin!
Thanks to Mr. Justin

You must be wearing x-ray specs because you’ve seen right thru me…
So how am I ‘obtuse’? Don’t see how saying what my experience is, makes me obtuse in any way. Why don’t you spell it out for me? As you’ve lost me there.
Frankly I’m sublimely indifferent if Obama is mocked or otherwise. I mean really why would I care? Oooooh. You mean ‘cos, like Obama is like jesus (in you’re brilliant analogy), and mocking jesus would be highly offensive to a certain group of people. I’d thus I’d be offended being an Obama ‘worshiper’. Gotcha.
Except I’m not an Obama worshiper. So mock away.
ROTFLMAO
Actually, getting this passed is the last thing these Republican sponsors want. It is designed to fail. They plan to use Obama’s veto of it as a stick to beat him with for the benefit of the religious right.
Truth be told, if Obama passed it, he could single handedly destroy the last hard core support of the Republicans.
But I don’t want to see the Constitution violated over a partisan dispute. So this bill should die.
The President regularly mocks himself, which is a sign he doesn’t take himself too seriously.
The Bible thumpers need to take themselves less seriously. They should realize that the Bible was written by a whole bunch of people, is simply a compilation of those peoples’ legends and opinions, and shouldn’t be taken as inviolate religious truth.
American Taliban! I like it. The mainstream press needs to start using it.
5, Except for the last 50 or so years, Separation of Church and State has always been a one-way road. It was put there to avoid a “Church of the United States” much like the Church of England.
The forefathers were never opposed to religious influence towards government. They just didn’t want government forcing the people to accept one particular religion.
Hooray! The year of make believe! How cool!
Here’s a GOP fix..
Create sub-brands and market to different customers.
“Republican-LITE” : Leans right but accepts all Americans and open to new ideas.
“Republican Premium” : Further right but mostly the current mainstream.
“Republican Taliban” : Bucket for the extreme right, religious wingdings and all the crazy aunts.
You can have different leaders for each bucket. This solves much of there problems.
#26,
2015, The year Obama’s Debts come due
2016, The year China stops lending The US money
2017, The year US becomes bankrupt due to uncontrolled spending
2018, The year Democrats propose another spending increase.
See I can do that too.
That being said this year of crap is about as stupid as Black history month. It means absolutely nothing, except for a chance for congress leaches to try to suck off votes.
Both the democrats and republicans are guilty of this sort of behavior.
#37:
Exactly.
Ben Franklin’s original design for the great seal had Moses splitting the Red Sea and the slogan, “Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God.”
#40 – Bob, you seem to forget that the Bush regime got us in this mess.
I have sucked off a lot of things, but never a vote.
With all due respect Bush was NOT a Conservative, if anything he was a ‘classic liberal’ (as Tammy Bruce once said) because he kept the coffers flowing. One of the biggest complaints of actual Conservatives was that they couldn’t see a spending bill that had been vetoe’d or sent back for revision. True conservatives are about limited government, limited interference in personal lives, and reduced taxes since the more money in people’s pockets means less money under the control of the government.
There are problems concerning ‘traditional’ issues among social conservatives. I think trying to label one year a ‘Year of the Bible’ is foolish and typical politico. It doesn’t help Republicans, just like someone saying they believe in Creationism over Evolution. (People have a right to say or believe what they think, but it has a consequence.) It feeds the wrong perceptions. And really, labelling them Conservative Taliban is cute but over-reaching as well. Is there a Christian version of Sharia that they’re pushing for? If anything, Conservatives are more for strict interpretation of the laws that are on the books, not for ‘bible courts’ or anything remotely like it.
@brm
“Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God.”
Nowadays this would make you a terrorist with no rights under the Constitution.
#40 – Your year Bob!:
2014 – Year of the Last Remaining Republican
@ 43
With all due respect – why weren’t the ‘true conservatives’ in the Republican party (if there were any) pointing this out during the 8 year period?
Relabeling eh? Interesting.
So water boarding isn’t torture, its heightened interrogation techniques.
Toxic assets become legacy assets.
And bush (and presumably the vast majority of his party which supported him), aren’t ‘true conservatives’. They are ‘classic liberals’ whatever that means.
Perhaps Cheney was the leader of the democrats, we just never noticed.

Perhaps Cheney was the leader of the democrats, we just never noticed. And who were the ‘true republicans’ where all this was going on? Ooooh! Ooooh! I know – were they Al Qaeda? Hang on that’d be stupid. Err. We’re playing opposites… sooo… they’d be the democratic party? Weird.
Where’s Alfred?
Very bizarre. However McCullough, I’m much more concerned about the coming massive inflation. If you had an ounce of sense, so would you.

“It feeds the wrong perceptions. And really, labelling them Conservative Taliban is cute but over-reaching as well”
The point is this in the US government and religious institutions are to be kept separate and independent from each other
Its like gateway drug every step that any one specific religious belief albeit Christianity is put into the law of the land erodes one of the foundations of our country the First Amendment came 1st for good reason
Overemphasize these goals in the GOP agenda is just to say >>LOOK OUT they are going down the road of the Religious State like the Taliban that is NOT the US gov Operating system
#49. Oh, you mean the inflation started by the Bush administration and continued by the current administration?
I agree.
We don’t have to worry about inflation until the economy turns around. To have inflation people actually have to feel safe enough financially to actually take out loans and SPEND money. Wage pressure also fuels inflation and I don’t see wage pressure anywhere on the horizon. Deflation should be your current worry.
@ 43
Just to clarify – my problem is not with the ‘true conservative’ labeling per se. I mean you can be conservative and not identify with bushes republican party. So how do you separate yourself from the the supposedly conservative republican party? Create a new label, fair enough. Although as it stands its not clear what a ‘true republican’ except what its not, and that doesn’t mean much.
What is sad is the calling bush + his cronies (presumably?), ‘classic liberals’. I mean take it like a man. They ran the US conservative party. Conservatism was their platform. They are conservatives. Deal with it. They might be _crap_ conservatives. But just because it didn’t turn out the way you hoped, doesn’t mean you can say, after the fact, ‘oh those guys yeah they were crap, but you see they weren’t conservatives, nah, they were the opposite….’.
How sad and pathetic is that?
It’d be great for there to be a new conservative party that used rationality, understanding, and didn’t think Christianity should be central to politics.
I’m not holding out much hope with the current muppet brigade tho.
The title of that book is missing the word ‘is’ between ‘Bible’ and ‘for’.
I know which bible they need to use: see lolcatbible.com .
The Christian vote has which has been moving the Dems, especially with the under 35 crowd. Maybe I’m cynical but this strikes me as a publicity stunt to split the Dems from their eroding Christian base.
Nah, the Republicans wouldn’t be playing politics with faith, surely?
#53:
You’re confusing ‘fiscally conservative’ with ‘socially conservative.’ Both are well-defined philosophies.
When someone says that we need to get back to fiscal conservatism, you just sound dumb when you say, ‘Bush was a conservative!’ No, Bush *called* himself a conservative.
So what, now any time someone wants to discredit an entire philosophy, all they have to do is screw things up and say ‘I’m a so-and-so’ and everyone believes that so-and-so is what they represent?
That’s ridiculous. By this logic I should believe that all Democrats think gays shouldn’t be allowed to get married, because Obama doesn’t think gays should get married.
#49. Paddy-O belched….”Very bizarre. However McCullough, I’m much more concerned about the coming massive inflation. If you had an ounce of sense, so would you.”
Yes, and if these repukes that you love to defend had an ounce of sense they would also. What’s your point loser?
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha…. Cut it out, guys. You’re killing me over here…

# 51 McCullough said, “#49. Oh, you mean the inflation started by the Bush administration and continued by the current administration?”
Absolutely. Actually, started by the Fed and made worse by Bush & now, Obama taking it to heights never imagined.
