The comment below is from this article about one found at a bank. Then there was this article and another one showing different types and techniques used.

“This past weekend I went to use the local WaMu ATM to get some cash money. When I walked up to the ATM something struck me as funny…I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but the card reader didn’t look right, like it wasn’t completely attached. I grabbed and pulled at the card reader and, lo and behold, it came off! It was actually a card skimmer attached to the ATM over that actual card reader. On the back there is a battery, flash memory card, and a mini USB port – it was set up so that ATM cards would first go through the skimmer and then into the ATM itself so you’d never know the difference. Fortunately I’d seen a news story about this sort of thing a couple of years back and have been paranoid ever since.

Watch out when you go to use an ATM!”

I can’t remember the last time I went into a bank and used a teller. I only use ATMs. I’m definitely going to be examining them every time before using them from now on.

And for what to do when ATMs aren’t rigged by crooks, but still steal your money

I wanted to buy an ATM on Ebay and put it in the break room where I work just to see how many people would use it.

  2. AshA says:

This is happening more and more. Any where you can slide your card there is a possibility of a card skimmer. This has been happening to Redbox vending machines as well.

  3. Jetfire says:

My question is why don’t the guys refilling the ATM with cash do an inspection too? Also why aren’t the machines redesign to prevent this. This scam is over 20 years old.

  4. Cephus says:

I just make it easy, I don’t use cash. I can’t tell you the last time I’ve ever had a single dollar in my wallet, nor the last time I’ve actually needed one. You can’t use a skimmer on a store’s swipe ATM reader.

  5. Uncle Don says:

This is one reason why I don’t use ATM’s.

  6. Cleetus says:

#3, they do. The skimmers often leave the device on for just a little while to avoid detection. #4, skimmers can be put on swipe readers (not as easily). Your recourse is to keep an eye on your charges and receipts and let your bank know right away of anything fishy. If your bank doesn’t care, get another bank. Either you or the merchant (or both) are paying for this electronica so get your money’s worth.

    lol… old news..move along…

like i said in a prior DU post,
you people have no idea how rampant (and long)
    this has been going on..

-in other news: hey John C..

feel like crashing the market tomorrow??

    post this:

    Bank stress tests leaked:
    http://turnerradionetwork.blogspot.com/2009/04/leaked-bank-stress-test-reults.html

    QUOTE:
“Bank of America`s total credit exposure to derivatives was 179 percent of its risk-based capital; Citibank`s was 278 percent; JPMorgan Chase`s, 382 percent; and HSBC America`s, 550 percent. It gets even worse: Goldman Sachs began reporting as a commercial bank, revealing an alarming total credit exposure of 1,056 percent, or more than ten times its capital! (HSBC is NOT in the top 19 banks undergoing a stress test, but is mentioned in the report as an aside because of its risk capital exposure to derivatives)”

google: “bank stress test leaked” and check out how many hits you get…

    looks like damage control will
be quite interesting tomorrow to say the least.

you know when *insolvent* banks post record profits ahead of quarterly earnings, the only reason can be so they can make off with some quick cash before they get tanked. i feel sorry for all the suckers

  10. Mr Diesel says:

The guy just didn’t look for the camera which I am sure was there. You are correct though, it has been going on for years……..
