In 1991, the government of Somalia collapsed. Its nine million people have been teetering on starvation ever since – and the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country’s food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas.

Yes: nuclear waste. As soon as the government was gone, mysterious European ships started appearing off the coast of Somalia, dumping vast barrels into the ocean. The coastal population began to sicken. At first they suffered strange rashes, nausea and malformed babies. Then, after the 2005 tsunami, hundreds of the dumped and leaking barrels washed up on shore. People began to suffer from radiation sickness, and more than 300 died.

Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy to Somalia, tells me: “Somebody is dumping nuclear material here. There is also lead, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury – you name it.” Much of it can be traced back to European hospitals and factories, who seem to be passing it on to the Italian mafia to “dispose” of cheaply. When I asked Mr Ould-Abdallah what European governments were doing about it, he said with a sigh: “Nothing. There has been no clean-up, no compensation, and no prevention.” At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia’s seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish stocks by overexploitation – and now we have moved on to theirs. This is the context in which the “pirates” have emerged. Somalian fishermen took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least levy a “tax” on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coastguard of Somalia – and ordinary Somalis agree. The independent Somalian news site WardheerNews found 70 per cent “strongly supported the piracy as a form of national defence”.

Do we ever get the straight skinny from the media?

    Yeah right!
First we dump our nuclear waste in their seas and than we loot Somalia’s seas of their greatest resource: seafood.
Maybe we should change the order.

  2. Traaxx says:

One less pirate great, we’ve got lots of pirate here in the US constantly stealing what others have worked for and using it for their own means. While in Somalia they are known as pirates we call them Demoncrats and usually the Progressive Demoncrats are even worse.

Our pirates and the traditional pirates have alot in common.

1.) Both like to kill children. We call it abortion.

2.) Both like to free their fellow pirates. Here they constantly strive to pass new laws to constrain citizens and then let out of prison criminals. Witness their continued work against three strikes laws and Megan’s Laws.

3.) Both Pirates and Demoncrats agree that the US should be defenseless. Witness our President Husein’s continued attack on our armies budget.

4.) Both blame everyone else for all the bad things that happen to them. Here Demoncrats work for pagan and sexually permissive society. When the Muslims hate America because of this and the fact that the Demoncrats insist on export their trash and their culture, they blame the religious Christians? What a joke.

5.) Demoncrats pass bills to create a finicial melt down by making banks count welfare and unemployment as income and when the crisis that they created, and after repeated forestalling any attempts to reform these laws, happens they cry foul. Pirates do the same thing, the rob, kill and create the condition that bring about their crisis and who do they blame, the west the same people they were robbing – figure they are Muslims. Has anyone noticed that little fact – according to Muslim Moral Code it’s ok to raid non-Muslims, including those that don’t correctly interpret the Koran.

Do you see, while Demoncrats protested against the Guantanamo and wire tapping laws and warrants, has Husein’s new government stopped any of that – what’s that NO. So..does anyone expect our troops to be coming home anytime soon. If you do you should go over to YouTube and look up Bob Hope’s Best Line.

    Whatever?

Why is it that whenever I read some partisan rant, I am struck by how stupid the arguments are? Maybe smart partisan arguments exist, but I have yet to find one on DU.

  5. sargasso says:

Not much passes by the Somali warlords. Painting them as anything other than pirates, slavers, smugglers and paid killers is stretching credibility.

  6. Phydeau says:

Once again, the wingnuts flail wildly at anything that doesn’t fit their narrow little version of reality. Black and white, that’s all they understand.

If there’s any truth to this toxic waste dumping, we should see it in other media outlets eventually.

And BTW, Traaxx, nice wingnut rant… I can almost picture the spittle flying out and hitting your screen. Great job! 🙂

  7. Mr Diesel says:

Why is it we never see any proof from these idiots making these accusations?

    I call bullshit.

  8. tarred says:

So let me get this straight. Evil Europeans are dumping their nuclear and biomedical waste in the waters of Somalia, and then stealing diseased radioactive fish to fill European stomachs? Why do conspiracy theories always require a totally moronic evil mastermind. Better revise your unfounded theory here and drop the fish tale, I’m sure you can come up with a better angle… actually I doubt that.

  9. #9&10

A quick web search finds stories on nuclear waste dumping and Somalia on NPR ,The London Times, BBC, Aljazeera, WordPress ect. If you were waiting for Bill O’Reilly to do a story on this you shouldn’t hold your breath.

I doubt that most of these pirates know or care about this alleged dumping. They’re out there because it seems like the only way to make a buck. when you live in a broken country with so little opportunity. The best answer for the shipping industry is to add security to the ships so this will no longer seem like the best way to make a buck..

Sorry I can’t think of a way to fix Somalia.

  10. Mr Diesel says:

    #12

I stand corrected. If it is true that solves two problems. It reduces the population of Somalia and has the potential to do the same for the Europeans.

    Wow! A win win.

If you add security to the merchant ships you run the risk of escalating the violence. I doubt if killing every single Somali pirate would solve it for any length of time. But it might send a message.

  11. Mike Strong says:

All are true and not necessarily part of the same brief. Yes, Europeans have been dumping radioactive and other waste (just as poor neighborhoods and small towns here get dumping grounds). Yes, European fishermen have been getting away with both Somali fish and not caring that those same fish have been contaminated by other Europeans’ dumping. and then

Yes, that Somali pirates are just thugs. If they really were trying to come back from the above assaults on their livelihoods they should take the same energies and focus them on putting their own nation together. You don’t see them (far as I can tell) taking those ransom monies and building schools, water plants, etcetera.

So their (essentially ungoverned) country is being assaulted and their response is piracy? Give me a break. These are not Somali coast guards. These are opportunists, cynical criminals who use their country’s dire state as an excuse for their own (unshared) takings.

But does this mean that global warming is on the decline?

  14. seeingclearly says:

Glad to see the real story being told here. The “pirates” are the good guys here, and it’s only a Bushite worldview that sees them as “evil”. The US-led West has turned Somalia into a hellhole and now tries to stop anyone who fights back, or even tries to make enough money to feed their families.

Obama has been snookered by the Chimp’s leftover “advisors” in the Pentagon into shooting Robin Hood.

I’m sure we’ll hear more from Adam on NA.

  15. Santa Maria says:

    I say prove it.

Even if it were true – so boohoo.

Its on the Somali’s to defend their territory from other people who want to dump their trash and each their lunch. If they can’t do it – then they deserve death – natural selection.

Now if the Somali’s want us to exercise the same option in reverse – I think we ought to. As the three dead Somalis found out with our lead in their heads. We live, they (deservedly) die.

I don’t understand this whining and crying. If the Somali’s feel they have been served injustice – bring it on.. fight us. Don’t whine for the pacifist d-bags and seek despicable “compensation”.

  16. Greg Allen says:

    Alfred1,

Why can’t you believe this story? It’s totally plausible to me.

When you visit the poor third-world there are endless stories about rich nationals dumping crap and other environmental problems over there.

    Greg

PS: Don’t accuse me of justifying piracy. I’m not. But these stories almost always are more complex than the TV news coverage.

  17. The Warden says:

I am not sure if McCullough is claiming that what the Somali’s are doing is justified in light of the alleged toxic waste dumping off of Somalia.

If so, why aren’t the pirates making these claims as to why they are hijacking ships? I bet they are using the ransom money to help the sick, right?

FUnny how so many of the idiots here in the US who want to be like Europe realize that the Europeans are some of the most immoral criminals around. But that’s the left for you. Wanting to rehash failed political policies so that they can emulate failed Europe.

  18. ECA says:

We are still missing 2 parts of this story..
SHIPS traveling in registered waters WITHOUT paying the concerned nations..
The raiders that are doing the DUMPING..

  19. me says:

Like someone else said, these are off-the-shelf stories ready for distrction. Something scary will likely be voted on today, and they don’t want you to notice it.

  20. Hawkeye says:

Where’s the beef? Let’s see some proof, or at least some documentation.

  21. Mac Guy says:

Amusing that you would use the word “skinny” with this story…

I don’t buy a fucking word of it.

  22. scadragon says:

BS meter is reading high on the story about barrels of nuke waste washing up on shore.

I did a google search. Guess what? All the links are conspiracy-theory type web sites.
NOTHING even remotely like a reputable news site.

    Moonbat Hoax.

  23. bobbo says:

Well–even if this questionable/unsupported report is true–its not “the other side of the Somali Pirate Story” because its totally unrelated.

One “other side” type story might be how the USA is going down the tubes financially WHILE providing security escorts for transport ships for FREE.

Also interesting to compare those gutless Frenchies taking effective action. Maybe there is another side to how the French view/interact with the world that would be instructive?

  24. Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid. says:

Now we find out the surviving pirate is a kid. Can’t charge him with any crime. Guess what will happen to this ass? He will be brought to the United States, given a slap on the wrist, and enjoy a free education at US Public Schools, and probably a scholarship to NYU, where he can become an ACLU lawyer. Great.

  25. MikeN says:

And if the US were to conquer Somalia to prevent this dumping, and provide a government, the same people would object to that too.

  26. brm says:

So this is Europe dumping nuclear waste, right? Did I hear that correctly, Europe? Europe?

OK, but it was Europe, right?

  28. Somebody says:

Oh, Boo-Hoo for the poor Pirates!

    Stifle, Edith!

I guess next time the girls at the drive-though f__k up my order, I’ll be justified running over pedestrians.

  29. RTaylor says:

The country will never heal with these tribal warlords in place. Most people know the answer to end this. Move the navel assets into the harbors and shell them flat. You keep it up until they no longer have the ability or will to continue piracy. A lot of innocents will die, and corpses and wounded will be all over the TV. No country have yet to want their flag associated with this. As far as ships being armed, that depends on their registries regulations. The problem is they can’t enter a port armed.

  30. Glenn E. says:

So now we know what’s very likely part of those World Trade Conferences talks. Where to dump the some of the stuff that they don’t want, and steal some of the stuff that they do want. How about the coast of some country, that the UN allowed to go to hell. Billions have been spent (or wasted) to fix the Iraqi government, and to keep Israel going. But screw Somalia. Let it fall, and we’ll exploit their resources that they can no longer defend.

That must be part of the 21th century’s robber baron strategy. They can no longer find undiscovered nations to exploit. So they bring down some existing ones, every so often. And then loot them. So what country will be next of the chopping block? I’m sure only the CIA and the Bilderbergs know that.
